Happy Sunday!
We hope you're all doing well and staying safe and healthy during this time of quarantine and social distancing. While we've been out at anchor, we've realized how close yet how far we feel from civilization given that our cellular coverage has been incredibly hard to come by. Whether we're at anchor near Seattle, north in the San Juan Islands, or in the Sound Puget Sound region, we struggle. And when you're working aboard your boat and your boat is home, this is definitely something we want to improve...quickly!
This video is for anyone who's also struggling to stay connected while on the water or who might simply be curious about the efficacy of a WEBoost cell booster. It's a bit technical in nature, so watch at your own risk!
Enjoy!

Forget about the booster - the real magic of this video is a boat builder who actually designed for serviceability. That job was super easy because they made easily removed access panels and wire chases instead of using all hidden fasteners and making you run the cable from the flybride to the engine room then back up to the pilothouse (all to common). I've done installations of similar items where you might need 75' of cable just to reach 10' and spend a full day tearing the boat apart to access the routing. (cough, SeaRay, cough)

Not sure if you're aware but if you unscrew the cigarette lighter adapter tip, you should find a barrel fuse inline. That fuse should have a rating stamped on one end. This will assist you in determining the correct breaker size.

Pro tip for cable management:. Instead of using zip ties, buy a roll of Velcro, then cut to whatever length you need. It will last forever in this application. It looks nice. It's easy to add or remove cables from a bundle if needed. I learned this dressing data closets in hospitals all over the US.

Cool video showing the install. Put the antenna as high as possible and you may get better reception. I would get a long metal extender vs a short one. I would also keep an eye on the amp and power adapter. Both can get very hot. Might want to build a vented box with a couple fans to run air across them. Fuse rating should also be inside the cig adapter. I would also look into getting a Ham license for the water. You can send messages for thousands of miles for free minus hardware costs. Hardware can run from expensive to cheap, but how much is your life worth. You can send emails, receive pictures, and marine updates for free with a laptop. No ISP needed. Super slow on data, but it is another means of communication in case of an emergency. It can also be a fun hobby with lots of information to learn so it keeps your mind busy.

Nice video again guys. Some people commented on StarLink for a future solution. The issue for it and vehicles is the system tracks the satellites and does something with a phased array antennae to point to the best satellite. Pretty cool, but on a boat that is always wobbling around it gets hard. It is done electronically so maybe there will be a way.

Happy Easter youse two... Great video once again from a view I have not seen in decades. I enjoy your life's lessons on simplification aboard your home. Is your boat a continuous WIFI "hotspot" now? I do like those pain-free installations with common sense attached. Unlike many who can't, I do consider your ability to continue to work from "home" a pure pleasure. Enjoy this day like no other and thankQ for this view... God Bless

Excellent effort as always. As fellow boat owners, my wife and I had to make the difficult decision to stay in port during the "Stay At Home - Essential Travel Only" statewide mandate we're currently under in Washington. We read the new rules up and down and couldn't justify how pleasure boating during the Pandemic was either legal or ethically responsible. If there was an accident while my wife and I were on the water, we'd feel dreadful using valuable First Responder resources or, God forbid, take away a hospital bed from someone with Covid. As live-a-boards you probably have a different set of rules. Good on ya and we hope you continue to have a GREAT cruise! Save some beer and wine for the rest of us. We should only be three weeks behind you!!!

There are lots of different cell boosters available today, differing configurations, antenna types and power ratings. If you select the right type for your application, do a proper installation, and have a signal available to boost, they work well. The mistake many make is buying one thats too powerful for the space available, especially in boats & RV's. The more powerful the booster (dB of gain) the more space required between the antennas. If you don't maintain sufficient separation between the outside & inside antenna, it creates oscillation between them and effectively shuts it down.

When I was in the Canadian Navy and we received our brand new ships in the 90's, we wanted to be able to use small hand held radios threw-out the ship for emergencies. The trouble was that there was just to much steel in the ship for this to work. The superstructure acted like a very big Faraday cage and shunted all the signals to ground. The solution, they strung RG 59 cable though out the ship in the wire ways. Problem solved. You need a terminator at each end of the cable. If you can find a piece of RG 59 say 20 - 30 ft long, put one end close to the antenna, without touching it and string the rest along the deck to another compartment and see if it works at those frequencies. RG 59 or 58, (TV Cable) should be easy to find and the terminators are pretty cheap. Worth a try to see if it works.... :-)

The Wilson antenna you bought is the original name of what is now called, WeBoost. I had a Wilson home unit that should have worked in your boat. It was more powerful than the mobile version you installed. Like Elizabeth stated, "I thought it would have worked farther from the inside antenna," well...the house version that would also work on your boat, would have worked anywhere in your boat. It's that much more powerful. You can even get a splitter and have two indoor antenna's and have one in the pilot house and the other in your bedroom. I highly recommend the WeBoost (formerly Wilson) units. If you ever decide to upgrade to the more powerful repeater, you can buy just that part without the extra antenna's, cable, etc., from WeBoost. Happy boating!

I hope this works for you. I've found in the past that you need a really good ground plane, as in a metal structure or faraday cage to separate the reception from the re-transmission antennas. For your cruising area, I'd suggest a dual sim LTE router for data and wifi calling using both Verizon and T-Mobile.

Looking forward to hearing some feedback on how the new booster works for you. From what I understand (which admittedly isn’t a whole lot) the best performance is when the antenna is as close as possible to your device. Otherwise your device competes with with the unboosted signal. Cheers!

Nice presentation. Looking forward to your review over time and at a remote anchorage. As I am quarantined, as we all are, I have been researching for my boat. WeBoost makes several versions of the product and there is one for RVs and one just for marine use. It comes with the correct antenna and a different amplifier box. I don’t know what the different box add as performance. Between WeBoost and Wilson the solutions for marine are very confusing. I am also looking at the Iridium Go as a solution. Not cheap either as a data plan or two are required. Again nice video.

BEWARE: It may seem like you were getting a very strong signal on your cell phone, but that could just be coming from the cell phone booster and it doesn’t mean the signal going into the antenna to the booster is that strong. So another words it’s not going to make the signal coming into the antenna stronger just from the box to the phone strong walking around that area

Wow, a 40 gb plan on the KVH Tracphone device is $2,600 a month before they add on taxes and fees for your government. That's for 20 mbps down and 3 up. Somehow you can get unlimited data, but at a much slower rate and for more money on top of the base fee. I think most people are using the predict wind app on the Iridium GO device. But the data is much lower and slower. You can make calls with it, but that too is limited and costly if you go beyond. Not KVH Tracphone costly, but not cheap either. The cruisers I follow are on sailboats and I think they all have cell boosters too. Happy Easter!

It is a signal amplifier and you must have a signal to amplify. Most remote anchorages do not have cell service thus making them remote.

Circuit protection devices (fuses, breakers) are to protect the WIRE, not the device. You should size the breaker for the wire run, there are plenty of online resources to help you calculate but you need to consider wire type (stranded, solid), gauge, and length of run (voltage drop), and whether the run is in a bundle or in "free air". When considering the length of run it is twice the distance from the source to the load (there and back again). Its fine to use a smaller breaker/fuse but not a larger one. In your video you seem to be considering the power requirement of the device, but not the wiring. Its probably fine for you, as it sounds like the run was originally for a 20A 12DC device, but others may not be so lucky :)

It would seem like anything that boosts your signal wirelessly will cut the bandwidth in half, so 4 bars on the boat won't the same speed as 4 bars when you are closer to a cell tower. However, I'm sure it will be faster than what you had with the poor signal and you will eliminate the interruptions due to dropping the signal.

The satellite internet is ridiculous on there service fees.whenever we order our new boat we always have them add that option. The cost is cheaper if the yard where your boat is being built in the stalls at for you. I just have them do it just in case the price comes down. Now we do have a satellite phone for emergencies. Even that to use for a phone call is very expensive. We haven't tried the cell phone booster. I really hope you keep us updated on how that works out for you.

The signal would be better if you put the internal antenna on the outside of the cabinet as far away from other electronics and metal surfaces as possible. I'm sure it'll work inside the cabinet as well but from our experience in a camper. It's better if the internal antenna has an actual line of sight to whatever device.
