Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

When I was a kid back in the 70's, my Dad wore t-shirts, 501's and black engineer boots. I wore t-shirts , 501's and white Chuck Taylors. We rode around PA. on a Harley Davidson Sportster havin a blast. All his friends had bikes, and they all wore black engineers! They all looked so cool and bad ass! So I love engineer boots! I have a pair from Chippewa, because they invented the style.

I have worn my Chippewa and Sears engineers for years even when I'm not riding. Your story about your dad struck a chord with me because my dad wore work boots all the time and kind of literally got me into boots in general. I'm in my mid 60's and have found that these boots broke in very easily and have lasted for a long time from taking good care of them. It's a timeless style that I always get compliments on as well as my black leather jacket with an eagle on the back.

Chippewas are nice, but they weren't the first. Frye had a Cavalry harness boot as far back as 1860 with the circular ring attached to the three-point harness, which is what we would recognize today as the square-toed engineer boot. Chippewa took that design and added stovepipe shafts around 1930. Wesco introduced the first genuine buckle-harness round-toe Engineer boot in 1939. Chippewa copied the design in the 1940s.

Thanks for the interesting video. I've been wearing Red Wing engineer boots for decades and am truly surprised at the number of comments saying they have never heard of or didn't know what they were called. As I have aged, I have taken to ordering my boots directly from Red Wing and having the Vibram wedge sole sewn on. It is a marked difference in comfort for an old man such as myself. I had some engineer boots from TCX lined with gortex with which I fell in love. They were purchased to use when riding my Harley, but I wore them everywhere. Unfortunately I had a bike accident in November last year and they had to be cut off me. They probably saved my leg from being detached from my body. Thanks for another great video, Carl. I have a pair of Wesco engineer boots, and they are great, although it takes a while to break them in. They are great for when you are working in one place standing on a hard floor or outside, but if you are doing a lot of walking not so great. At $500 they are pretty expensive, but I had a few up grades added when I ordered them. They were designed for locomotive engineers who needed to kick their books off quickly if a coal from the furnace accidentally jumped in. Those must have been some pretty loose fitting boots, because I need a boot pull to get mine off.

The best boots I ever had were Carolina Engineer boots. Got them as a teen, and used them for everything- school, work, hiking, fishing, wading, pouring cement...and 3 decades after purchase, riding my motorcycle. The midsoled finally rotted out, and there were some serious cuts in the leather, so I had to retire them. I bought the same model from Carolina, and they are not nearly as well made today. Might get some Westco's with the full lug sole, that was the only thing I did not like about my old boots, lack of traction. Well broken in, engineers boots are comfortable for nearly anything, maybe just not backpacking.

Way back in 2010, Kenneth Cole produced a rain-boot version of this style called the "Electric Rain". First time I'd ever seen a 'rain boot' specifically made for men that didn't look like a repurposed PVC "work boot"/welly (and thus looking-out-of-place as casual wear). Nowadays if you use the right keywords and sift through enough listings, you can find unbranded similar-looking rainboots (without the ankle strap) on AliExpress.

I have engineer boots by Role Club and Wesco. They are very different, particularly in the heaviness of the build. These boots are EXTREMELY hard to get to fit right. Not only do they have to fit in the toe box, but they have to fit perfectly across the arch. If they are too tight across the arch, they will be hard to put on and painful to wear. If too loose, there will be way too much heel lift when walking. It is very, very tough to get them exactly right. So be forewarned!

I really hate how some places require laced boots. They are more dangerous than boots like the traditional engineer boot. If your foot gets caught and it's an emergency situation, you need to cut through or undo a bunch of leather laces. With these and other pull-on boots you just pull out of, or will be removed automatically if it's pulled hard. Add a met guard on your laced boots and good luck getting out fast enough. Rather be shoeless on the job site than legless.

they were originally made for locomotive workers to keep burning embers and debris from going in the boot. the name basically means operating engineer boots. nowadays with modern safety laws and rules, actual train operating engineers are required to wear different footwear just as basketball players can’t wear converse anymore. engineer boots are now popular with goths, bikers, and welders.

Whites makes 2 different styles, Nicks make them as does Westco. To my knowledge it appears that Carolina no longer makes them. Frey’s is limited and Red Wing makes there’s with crepe soles now and they look goofy. Those are boots that cost between $350 to $800. Frye R12 with round toe (square is available but not traditional) I feel are the best value for USA made quality rebuildable Engineer boots. All the made in China are not as sturdy for MC riding protection. The quality is also suspect and sized fun small.

Good quality engineers with the 12 inch uppers cost over a hundred in those days and were too pricey to risk the kind of abuse we put them through. I notice that the strap is higher on the ones shown. The boots we had the strap went over and down to the sole. These days cowboy boots are the better option.

What’s your opinion on belts with interchangeable buckles i.e. cowboy belts
@CarlMurawski
@CarlMurawski 5 лет назад
If the leather is properly thick, I think it's an excellent idea. I also really want to try one with the old fireman style "quick release".

Carl Murawski I like how the old firefighter belt pieces have an ornament almost oriental look to them

What pants would you recommend for a guy who does Masonry, welding, carpentry, framing painting and every so often gas and diesel mechanics. I currently own a 8 or so pairs of wrangler jeans but want something a bit fore durable.

I love the made in USA double front Carhartt pants. They have two layers of duck canvas over the front of the legs and wear like iron.

Can you use engineer boots for hiking? I really like the look, especially the knee-high ones. By no means will I ever want to buy the conventional hiking boots-the ones that look like grandpa boots. If you like them, more power to you, but I can stand the sight of them, let alone the though of wearing one.
@1hdoilfielddad244

Youll end up with blisters. Theyre not a tight fit. Who cares what boots look like if they work? Boots are function over form, not the other way around.
@DakkogiRauru23

@@1hdoilfielddad244 I care if they look good, and yes they can. You’d be lying to yourself if you said boot companies don’t make them look good.

My recommendation is that you do buy all-round boots that you like the look of and try them out while hiking. If you do need specialised hiking boots you will find out pretty quickly.

i have this one pair of boots that limit the circulation on my right foot. my left foot is fine. im pretty sure its broken in. when i wear this my right foot feels numb. im not sure if this has ever happened to you or anyone reading this? what was the solution? i'll try loosening the laces again when i clean them.
@CarlMurawski
@CarlMurawski 5 лет назад
Wow. It almost sounds like symptoms of early break-in. Have you tried hitting the spot with a little water and then a hair dryer? This can help soften the leather a bit.
