Generally speaking we definitely get an easier ride but I would also say that we stand up for ourselves (basic rights) in ways that would be unimaginable to your average Vietnamese, and those dealing with us seem desperate to make the situation go away, so we can get what we want that way...and of course this would just further enhance Vietnamese stereotypes of Western Privilege.
Scandinavian here. I generally experience positive attitudes but I make an effort at behaving well and being polite. I don't get drunk and behave disorderly. I have nonetheless experienced passing Grab drivers who spat at me for no reason and a taxi driver who threw a cigarette butt at me, also for no reason. So clearly some Vietnamese dislike foreigners. Mostly the experience is positive. If it wasn't the foreigners would not stick around like we do :)
The perk is, when I go to the ATM machine in Vietnam, I feel like I'm a millionaire with 100,000 bills coming out of the machine, like I hit a jackpot at a casino, then the disadvantage is, when I go to spend these incredible humongous 100,000 bills, I suddenly feel like I'm no longer a millionaire 🤣
@@Atricapilla I am black and act just as good as you do. However I get treated like shit. I tried to stay positive but had to go home early due to how bad I was getting treated by Vietnamese people... yet they treat white people with respect
Foreigners are treated well in Saigon and Hanoi especially well. My experience as a foreigner in Vietnam was very good experience and locals hospitality was very best 😊
Great info, honest guy, Vietnam is looking heaps better than Thailand (they seem to make it harder), i just want a place with easy access to good food, cheap accommodation and golf coursea, no hassle visas etc etc
@@skyetran Probably somewhere to the North West of Hanoi where it is cooler. I am a polar Bear after all. Canada is facing multiple crisis's caused by our Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau. Housing, employment and cost of living. Most people can barely pay for the bare basics of living and children are out of the question completely.
The upside of being a foreigner in vn is being treated well, the downside is getting charged more than locals. Tourists are aware of this but find it hard to deal with imo which is why vn has such poor return tourist numbers compared to neighbouring countries. However, VN is an amazing country that steals a piece of your heart. Once you apply effort to understand the culture, history, language it just gets better and better. It's just hard to break the surface in that sense on a 2 week vacation.
Letters and fines are not nearly as bad, try my home city in Tempe, Arizona. Here, if my weeds are taller than 2 inches (5 cm) in the alley, they send me a nasty letter threatening to put me in a jail cell because my weed has grown too high🤣. I think Singapore has similar jail threats, such as, if a person leaves gum on the ground it's jail time. Each place has their own "Vogon's" (the bureaucrats from the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"). At least the "bright side" is, it increases the real estate value (equity), if you own real estate (though the downside of this is, increased property taxes).
@@pete79602 That is exactly what I said when I started getting letters from my city, shocked, when I looked up the consequences of the threatening charges. At that point I realized my home city is just like Singapore where if you toss a piece of gum on the sidewalk they put you in jail (note: I have not been to Singapore yet). On the bright side, I understand Singapore's airport is one of the most accommodating airports on the planet.
I am learning Vietnamese read write all of it (I have a wonderful Vietnamese teacher and she is native to Saigon and she speaks wonderful English btw ) I can read write and speak the Mexican dialect of Spanish pretty well. I think if a person lives in a foreign country they should know the language or be actively learning it the best they can… I expect it here so I would be quite the hypocrite if I didn’t do it myself , regarding Americans getting jobs speaking English. Well it’s their mother tongue. Why wouldn’t they be hired before others. No disrespect to the German man, but his English is tainted with a heavy accent. Now your students have to overcome that or learn English with that accent and your English is very good, but I even heard the small mistakes. I’m sure you’re a wonderful English teacher. I’m not taking that away from you at all , however It would be like me getting hired to teach Spanish in Mexico over a Mexican . I speak Spanish very well, but not as well as somebody from there. and his comment about Germany is sad and one of the big reasons why I would never travel in Europe he’s not wrong about that. I I prefer the friendliness of the Vietnamese people over the Europeans
So neat meeting ppl who love to travel, a buffet of knowledge regarding different countries. Thank you Skye, enjoyable! Interesting how color is a priority for education. From what he says, there must not be any black teachers in Vietnam. I experienced that same antiquated complexity in South China Shenzhen. Weird! But it is what it is.
Hey girl , I will tell after I stay in Vietnam :)) , I come to Vietnam in December , start a new let say journey , new beginning ! . I was thinking to start a channel also , the sad part is I like privacy :))) , cya around byeeeeeeee !
