I have used the Adams Idea chipper 37 degree for 10 years, I put an extra fat grip on it lovely. I do not have enough confidence around the green. BUT you need a lot of green to work with. Our greens are elevated so you cannot run up. Best on flatter approaches with a lot of green at least 20 feet as this baby will run. Putter stroke is best. My biggest problem is if I try to land before the green and run, that is tricky. You were just using this and found it easy to use, very accurate. If you used a lot you would love even more.
Installing a fat grip or putter grip is a violation of USGA rules. Sorry, you just turned an iron into a 2nd putter. The chipper can also only have one striking face. Sorry to be a rules snob, but you need to know this if you ever use it in any tourneys.
I took a cavity back 9 iron, filled the cavity with silver solder, smoothed it out and covered the solder in lead tape. I then mounted that head onto a graphite shaft to maximize swing weight. I was absolutely amazed at the shots I could stick close from almost any lie. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Great video great advice. I have one and if my short game is off it goes back in the bag. Otherwise I find that standing closer with the shaft upright and the heel of the club off the ground works really well. The British coach Pete Cowan advocates this method with great effect.
For those of us who play single length clubs, chipping with a 6 hybrid (30 degree) works as good or better because the sole on the hybrid is not flat. My putter length is 34 inches and my single length clubs are 37 inches in length, so if you choke up on the hybrid about 4 inches it is the same length as my putter which I choke up about an inch. You can then use a putting stroke. This way you don’t have to decide about what clubs are in or out of the bag.
Your choice of a hybrid 6 iron is correct. I own a chipper from MacGregor Golf named "Long Roll Chipper". It is 27° and looks like a hybrid iron. It has a length of 37". It is unbelievably versatile.
I would never use one of these clubs but I appreciate your open-mindset and humility. It would certainly help a lot of people who are just out for fun.
But Don... I'm sure you use hybrids, a range finder, 460cc driver, etc... aren't they all recent developments to help people who can't use long irons, etc??
I have the tank chipper from Odyssey. It’s really fun to hit. So easy and but hardly need it in a round. Thank you for checking out this type of club! Fun to watch
A lot of snobbery in golf and i'm no tiger woods so as soon as i dropped my ego and got myself a chipper (Odyssey) 6 months back i saved 6-8 shots per round..no one cares how many clubs i have in my bag at my level, couldn't recommend enough
I've been using a vintage chipper I found at a tag sale years ago and... love it. These days we have hybrids, graphite shafts, range finders, adjustable drivers with 460cc heads, golf watches, etc, etc... yet chippers are frowned upon??? Go figure. 👍🏼🍻
I just put a 5 gallon bucket in the yard and hit balls at it with my 52. You can even work on flop shots with a 60 once the balls get too close, best thing you'll ever do for a high handicap game is take 50 chips every evening.
Thx MSG! Very cool that you actually would have a video on this as many feel its an illegal club. Coming back to the game after yrs and yrs...chipping is my only struggle spot left...this video helped a lot as I have a wicked case of the yips and its killing my score. Gonna give it a try,
I have a Cleveland smart sole chipper and it’s a great club. I use it a lot from 30 yards or less. Longer shots do depend on how much green you have to work with.
My chipping was horrible so I decided to buy the square strike and my chipping has never been better. Even when I miss hit it the ball goes somewhat straight. Its lowered my score by 4 strokes.
I just took my new Cleveland smart sole 4 "c" to the range today. I think it's 42 deg loft and about as long as my other wedges. It was great! I was able to nail my targets from 100 yards and in, knowing it would roll out a bit. Closer in will be easy peesy :0)
I really want to get a chipper for lower scores. But I'm doing so much better on my chipping. It's cool when you chip and it rolls into the hole 😁 but the lower scores would help my confidence and enjoyment.
If you drive a SUV then you don’t have a trunk. You’ll get used to it. I like how you explored all the possibilities. You have thirteen clubs to choose from, not just a few.
Daddy Mac because golf has rules. If I am playing my ass off representing my club or in my club championship, I’m going to point out if someone has more than 14. There’s a reason I always count my clubs prior to a round. Obviously only a competitive round - not on a quick 9 in the evening.
When you make GIRegulation on a 50-60% and your finish always with 3,4, shots more because when your are off green you have to chip and chipping always been a nightmare not pitching, not out of sand but dawned chipping….So I bought a Cleveland Smart Sole chipper….ego aside….saving 4 to 6 shots per game and much better putting as a logic consequence. Just so easy to have a putting mouvement with more or less torque depending on grass or distance to achieve. Averaging 87-89 and down to 84-85….never mind big EGO ….Scottish where also playing with this king of joystick .
Thanks, Matt. Great video. I used a different chipper for one season but couldn't get myself right with it Pinemeadow Golf has been around for at least 20 years. They are out of Portland Oregon and make some of the better recommended "clone" golf clubs. IMHO, chippers, as their name implies, are only good for chipping around the green. Personally speaking, I'd just take a similarly lofted iron and use it. Other that your putter and driver, every other club has multiple purposes. Just hate to be restricted to one purpose. You said it right, use your putting grip and stroke for these types of clubs. Some folks like them but most people I play with really don't care for them.
I’ve tried a friends chipper.... and yeah they work to a certain point but that spot in your bag can go to a club that can do multiple shots.... just learn how to chip and spend your money on getting fit for other clubs instead....you can learn how to do the same exact flighted shot with 3 other clubs.... get your wedges fit and you’ll be better off...
Never used one myself, but i do believe to make these efective you are supposed to actually "putt" with them not "chip" per say if you know what I mean! :D and no not through the whole video yet, can see it in ytour stroke lol
I think it’s great for beginners but too limited for most experienced golfers. I’d like to see it with a taller club face which would help with fluffier lies where you might go underneath the ball. I think if Square Strike made a club with this kind of loft it might be more valuable
I am amazed that everyone doesn't carry a chipper. I have a Cleveland Niblick which I bought on ebay (mainly because I couldn't find a decent new branded club). I found I was often chunking my wedges for the more delicate chips from the edge of the green, especially in wet conditions, often costing me 3 or 4 shots a round. My chipper has been a revelation. I find I use this club maybe 10 times a round and I've never chunked it. Its also very helpful in those situations where the ball is in a hazard and you just want to get back on the fairway. After practice the results are consistently close and chip-ins are fairly common. It replaced my gap wedge which I rarely used. I still need the 60 degree for over bunkers etc.
New golfer.... I hit my first up-and-down from about 25 yards last week with an old Fazer chipper I bought at a thrift store. I love this club! It has helped my score immensely.
Thinking of getting one. I’ve only played for 2 years and most of my approach shots end up off the green so I use the Texas wedge a lot. I think this could be a good transition
Use the Mr shortgame 10 video shortgame series, you won't need anything like this. I'm on video 4 and my chipping confidence has gone from zero to 80%. Ps like Mr shortgame I don't get anything for this😁
Yes they do , I teach a class with just these type clubs , I'd say 80% of the people that play need to carry one because they have no intention of ever truly practicing the hrs needed to chip the "correct" way , make a putting stroke off she goes , a hybrid can be used the same way as well .
Love it I got a Cleveland smart sole chipper same thing. I call it the Chutter. Anyway good for me up to 130 yard shots 150 down hill. Very accurate at close ranges. If I'm hitting off of tight lies and not hitting my 56 or 60 well I break out the Chutter. Bump and run all the way. Also great for low ball flight keeps ball underneath tree branches and stuff. Lovee all your videos! Keep it up.
Same for me with Cleveland Smart sole chipper. Anything inside 100 yards, unless there's no room for runout. Then the Cleveland Smart sole sand wedge. My short game still sucks, but at least I can get on the green.
I am a 5hdcp, from the midwest and now reside in the northwest, very good with short game around the green. However, I still struggle with bermuda grass especially into the grain in the south including Las Vegas and California. The big sole helps prevent digging, just no bite. I even think of putting this club in the bag when I travel for friendly tournaments.
I'm 72.. I only have 10 clubs in my bag because there is no reason to carry something you rarely use...One of mine is a chipper which I added after playing for years with a friend who is deadly with his from about 20 yards in and chips in once or twice every round... I'm not that great with mine BUT I now have a lot more 1 putts than I used to... I also carry an Alien wedge as one of my 10 clubs... I'm no scratch golfer but I'm consistently in the low 90's and quite happy with that.
Tried one for a season and did exactly what it said on the tin. The trouble was while it was great around the green , it wasn’t great at anything else so I couldn’t justify replacing another club in my bag.
1 driver 2 putter 3 9 iron 4 7 iron 5 6 iron 6 4 iron 7 3 iron 8 1 wood 9 3 wood 10 5 wood 11 pw 12 sw 13 chipper 14 another putter, driver, or wedge. What clubs do you have outside of the ones I numbered? I don't have an 8 or 5 iron.
I borrowed my moms pitch putter. It's a 45 degree. I found straight shots and easy to control. Going to find me one tomorrow. Definitely going to improve my game. On the practice green I was getting close to sinking them. For us who struggle with chipping this is the ticket
On wish u can buy a double sided one for about 60 Australia dollars and that's a bonus when your right handed trying to play a left handed shot pxg look it up on wish and your all welcome
As the instructions say, "use your putter swing and grip". I do carry one, and took out my pitching wedge, my 9 iron and gap wedge can carry most of the difference. I usually track my fairways hit, G.I.R., and putts. Even though I am not a great putter, I rarely take more than 32, and that's less than a par number. Fairways come in at about 50%, not good! But, G.I.R. is about 5 of 18(Crap!) The chipper helps me take less putts by getting on the greens sooner and closer ; no brainer!!
If you're going to get a chipper, why not use the Cleveland Smart Sole C? They've made them for like 4 years and forgiving, game improvement clubs are what Cleveland does.
I actually used this chipper for about eight months on the Amateur Tour I was on. I wasn’t confident with chipping and this club helped, but it also taught me the better mechanics of chipping that I was able to chip confidently with my other clubs that I was able to take it out of the bag. So I do think it can help someone, and the club I took out was my most lofted club. It worked for me.
My wife started using a chipper for all her chip shots a little over a year ago and I guarantee you she has shaved 4 to 5 strokes off her rounds. She uses it for everything from 15 yards and in as long as there is nothing like a trap in the way.
These do work.. Great for summer, imagine you've landed your shot just shy of the green on a rock hard fairway, short grass etc.. In that situation I'd take a chipper over a wedge all day 🤟🏻
I carry a Cleveland Niblick 42 instead of either a 60 or a 3 iron. I have zero doubt it saves me 2-3 strokes as an 8 handicap, particularly for tight lies and the sneaky use is the 100 yd sand trap. What cracks me up is the buddies who chuckle about it, then they chunk a shot and take 2 more to get down when I get up and down. Go ahead and chuckle while I take your money. Again.
Richard Charles I used a chipper one season really effectively. It was cheap, now I use my 8 iron. If I had the chance to purchase a high quality chipper, I would
Is my chipper old? It says Bear Foot alignment system. Golden Bear. It does knock um in pretty straight. It has an emblem of a golden colored bear on it.
I have a chipper in the bag. I like to use it when I'm just off the green to get over the fringe. I could probably just about get away with using a 9 iron/PW but I find them a bit hot off the face in that scenario.
Rick Shiels reviewed one similar and gave it to several seniors at his club to test. Told them to "use your putter swing" and NONE of them could do it. Even with him telling them what to do, they're mind just wouldnt allow it and they all swung it like a wedge... LOL... Was painful to watch....
Perfect time for this review! Just ordered a Wilson Harmonized from Amazon. I’m decent from around the greens but want to use this for very short shots when I can . Why not make the game easier?
Practiced and used the chipper today. I think it works well from a good lie just off or around the green. Used it 4 times. All the shots came up too short but like I said just got it and need more practice. But definitely see myself using it more as I get better with it. Of course there are some shots that will require an iron .
You know what gets on my nerves about chippers? It's how often people speak of them in the context of using while you figure something out "before going back to a wedge" or a "proper club" or whatever. It's as though using a chipper is some sort of _step down_ in terms of your game. I seem to recall a lot of similar crap being spouted about hybrids at one point. Then that guy beat Tiger in one of the majors with a bag full of hybrids in the long irons, and the perception changed. Remember, there are no pictures on a scorecard. Only numbers...
The frustration I’ve had around the green prompted this buy. Got rid of the lob wedge which was 30% good when I whacked it anyway. At least I’m consistent. When behind a bunker though, it’ll run, so count on it playing deep. The granny stick was a great buy for me though. Total putter grip.
So it has the loft of about an 8 iron but obviously shorter with a more upright lie the shaft looks, feels & performs like putter. It's a specialty club like a sand iron or driver or putter, it requires the right situation.
Today (03/30/22) I pulled out of my garage bag a Ray Cook Chipper. I must haven bought it 4-5 years ago and used once on the course with little or no practice with the expected poor results. This morning before seeing your video I did exactly everything that you did, even trying to hit over a bunker and out of a sand trap and my results were close to yours. I'm going to game it tomorrow and see if I can improve on my chipping/score?
I find my chipper so easy to use. I had a gap in length between my pitcing wedge and the 56 degrees. I even use it from 50 yards or so to the pin. Has saved me from annoying shanks.
yeah, welllllll.....I have a Pat Simmons chipping wedge and get a lot of zero-putt greens out if it. And so far have not been arrested for carrying 15 clubs.
I’ve used a chipper for a few years. It takes a while to master especially on longer pitches. The biggest thing for me was distance control. I’ve even used it out of shallow bunkers. Once you get used to it, it can be a useful club.
Yes they work have a tour edge one use it off and on when my chipping goes off this time a year in FL the courses are pretty hard so I use it more it works good off the hard ground
Yeah, my chipping game is probably 80% success. would i get one of these clubs? probably not. i like the idea but it is like you said a one trick pony. great vid.
That's like saying a sand wedge is a one trick pony. They're golf clubs...they hit a ball...that's their one trick. A good chipper is used for 50 yards is to be more forgiving than bladed wedges.
@@pmportella I guess...but then why do you have a driver? Each club does one thing...hit the ball. The only thing that changes is how far or close to the hole you hit the ball with that club.
I just don’t get the snobbery surrounding these clubs - if it’s legal and it works then any h’cap should USE it. Rubbish to say it’s only for high h’cap, why would you make the game more difficult for yourself whatever your h’cap. I played off 11 until I put one in my bag x6 months ago - I’m now off a comfortable 8, and I’ve changed nothing except put a chipper in my bag………
