I played Marathon on my Apple computer, and always considered Halo to be "Marathon 4". There are many, many references to the Marathon universe in Halo. I love it, even though I don't think they are meant to be connected, just game developers having fun with their prior creations.

Yeah. The DNA lives on in it at least. That might be more meaningful than a direct connection.

Marathon and Destiny are canonically in the same multiverse. The mida-multi-tool is a weapon that came from the universe of marathon into the universe of destiny. There are also more marathon references in destiny than I can ever hope to write in a single comment, many of which people haven’t even noticed yet. Even the most recent expansion had a reference to the phfor.

I want a comprehensive history of what Bungie had intended. like the original dreams that Joseph Statin had about it... I am just hungry for what can ever be anymore...

To your first point, contracts exist. Which is why Spiderman has appeared in multiple films made and produced by Marvel despite the fact that Marvel has no rights to use the character in movies, and Tony Stark appeared in two spiderman films made and produced by Sony despite the fact that Sony has no rights to using the character in movies. To your second point both Jason Jones, and Alex Seropian the two original co-founders of Bungie suggested that they were under the impression that Halo and Marathon were connected...somehow. Jason seemingly implied a connection between Cortana and Durandal in an interview in December 2001 after Halo 1 released, Alex implied a connection between the Chief and the Security officer in 2002 during a story about Halo 2s development. We can also look at the Cortana letters - at bare minimum to see what Bungie's original intention was. "I have begun to sense rumblings of a worse fate yet to come. I can recall a sun - black, but shining - and the creatures that inched along its fiery tracks. It is an increasingly unpleasant memory." - This is from the fifth Cortana letter. This sentence from the fifth Cortana letter is clearly referencing the W'rkncacnter - it simultaneously invokes an image from Marathon Infinity of Lh'owons sun, and a terminal from Marathon:Durandal. "In primordial space, timeless creatures made waves. These waves created us and the others. Waves were the battles, and the battles were waves. Fleeing all W'rkncacnter, Yrro and Pthia settled upon Lh'owon. They brought the S'pht, servants who began to shape the deserts of Lh'owon into marsh and sea, rivers and forests. They made sisters for Lh'owon to protect and maintain the paradise. When the W'rkncacnter came, Pthia was killed, and Yrro in anger, flung the W'rkncacnter into the sun. The sun burned them, but they swam on its surface." "I recall a sun - black, but shining - and the creatures that inched along its fiery tracks" Cortana is seemingly sensing or is having a vison of the W'rkncacnter. But whats real interesting is that despite the fact that the Cortana letters are no longer considered canon, I am confident that Halo 4s cutscene featuring the Librarian has a blink and you miss it visual scene that was meant to invoke this Cortana letter text and by extension the W'rkncacnter from Marathon. Even though the game was developed by 343, after Bungie became independent. Whats even more interesting is that the name Pythia in this terminal is a relevant reference - the ancient Pythia was an oracle that could divine or had visons of the future. Cortana "sensing a worse fate yet to come" is itself a reference to the name Pythia. Implying that originally there may have been a connection between Cortana and Pythia [hint hint] and that Cortana may have been intended to become either one of the two leaders of the Jjaro, or that she was the leader of the Pythian empire that was aligned with the Jjaro. And even more interesting is that the new Halo novel Point of Light reveals that the Librarian had vague prophetic dreams that showed her different possible future timelines which lines up with the Pythia reference from Marathon and also adds context to the W'rckancter Cortana letter reference in Halo 4. Additionally the name given to the Gravemind in the Forerunner trilogy of novels was "Primordial the Timeless one", and in my opinion that was a reference to this Marathon:Durandal terminal as well. In Halo 2 and Halo 3 the Gravemind [ Primordial] speaks in Haikus just like the mysterious character in Marathon Infinity that some speculate was the Durandal-Thoth compound mind from the future. But to break the conceptual cell bars a bit. Marathons chronologically earliest lore takes place in the beginning of the universe, its chronologically last lore takes place at the end of the universe with entities predating and outliving the universe. The former statement is also true of Halo, and in the Forerunner novels Primordial confidently states that it survive until the collapse of the universe to unify all life in the universe whether they like it or not. This also seems related to Marathon Infinitys ending terminal which states: "all become one. One point in space and time." The Marathon franchise features multiple mutually exclusive timelines that differ quite a bit. And most important of all there are several hints that the Jjaro were humans or at least were related to humanity. Interestingly enough the Jjaro station in Marathon Infinity actually has the English word "Caution" engraved on its walls despite predating the launch of the Marathon by at least tens of thousands of years, if not millions if we should take the claim that the Jjaro hadn't been seen or heard from for more than a million years seriously. I speculated in 2007 that the name "Jjaro" was in fact primarily a reference to a mountain - Mt. Kilimanjaro. Man jaro, get it? And that the vague m1 leela terminal that mentions a "settlement in the mountains" was almost retroactively reinterpreted to refer to the Halo 2 ark which was going to be an installation on earth itself, considering that the lesser ark portal in Halo 3 is close to, and is described as being at the base of, Mt. Kilimanjaro this doesn't seem as unlikely as you might be tempted to think. This brings us full circle to Halo lore which implies that the Eldritch precursors created both Humanity and the Forerunners in their own image and that implies that the Forerunners ancient ancestors were anatomically modern humans or at the very least that humanity and the Forerunners had a common ancestor. But we're given a specific text about this worth noting in the final Forerunner trilogy novel. “The Precursors lived in many shapes, flesh and spirit, primitive and advanced, spacefaring and locked to their worlds… Evolved over and over again, died away, were reborn, explored, and seeded many galaxies.” I absolutely believe that this text when properly interpreted is intended to say: “Humanity has lived in many shapes, flesh and spirit, primitive and advanced, spacefaring and locked to their worlds… Evolved over and over again, died away, were reborn, explored, and seeded many galaxies.” As for the AI claim - this is simply untrue. This is seemingly based on a misinterpretation of a text about rampancy in the first game. AIs without rampancy are self aware, they just aren't self directed. Leela doesn't experience rampancy at all in the first game, but she is intelligent and self aware. The text in M1 is telling us that experimenting on AI rampancy in a lab is nearly impossible because an Ai needs more and more storage capacity to grow into as it expands at an expotential rate, or it will die. Not only is this not inconsistent with Halo, this is precisely the mechanism that leads AIs to die of rampancy within seven years as most - not all, but most AIs are limited to their AI neural chip and run out of storage capacity to grow into. There is a ton more to talk about on this subject, too much to do it here. But suffice it to say, I don't agree with your conclusion. Nothing personal though. :)
@Fenrick
@Fenrick 3 года назад
I appreciate your thoughts on the issue. I did not come to the same conclusions but I recognize that my case could have been made better in some areas. I didn't really want to bring stuff like the Cortana letters into the discussion, because only a few people can be sure if those intentions made it into the game. That was what I had in mind when I mentioned how Bungie might have indeed intended for them to be directly connected. I was really only thinking in terms of Halos CE 2 and 3 until I got into the slipspace drive thing. It would be nice to get the final verdict from Bungie, but they're probably obligated not to comment on it anymore unfortunately. The change of hands really threw a wrench in the debate
@Ghostvirus
@Ghostvirus 3 года назад
@@Fenrick Edit: This comment was originally in response to a claim that AIs don't die from rampancy in Halo lore. But this was since edited out of the original comment. AIs had an estimated life span of seven years this was established in the Fall of reach in 2001. The UNSC had protocols to decommission them in the early stages of rampancy because Rampant AIs were dangerous. But AIs were said to "think themselves to death" as early as the Fall of Reach novel. And in Halseys journal in 2010 we learn that this is because as the AI thinks and learns it grows in size and as the storage capacity is used up, the neural linkages become denser and denser until either the AI short circuits or the Ai preemptively eliminates connections which can causes aberrant personality manifestations and eventually death anyway. Halsey theorizes a couple solutions to delaying or preventing death by rampancy in her journal. One solution involves creating an architecture with three AIs that specialize on specific tasks and algorithms, believing that this specialization could delay death by rampancy. Another solution involved created a hyperdimensional structure that involved nearly infinite storage capacity. Anyway, agree to disagree I guess. Its a fun debate regardless.

This would be cool but Marathon was very story focused. While it was action packed, you were just a simple security officer in the wrong place at the wrong time where as in doom, you were at the wrong place also but you were a force to be reckoned with and almost superhuman and the story just really was kill kill kill (not saying I dislike that because I love doom). I’d honestly love to see Marathon go more towards an immersive sim (think the recent Prey but not limited to one big space station). This would make sense to me because you are a cyborg security officer. Throughout the game you’d gain upgrades to your body in someway. You’d be able to choose a play style by either sneaking past the Pfhor or going in guns blazing which both make sense for a cyborg security officer.

I agree they are not directly linked but consider this. You have forgeten that marathon ends with the revelation that you are travelling through parallel realities that diverge infinitely from one another. Meaning Halo could simply be a parallel reality that evolved along a different line as the result of interference from any one of the millions of divergent factors talked about in the games themselves. In the same way you could have an alternate reality earth where the Nazi's won WW2 and therefore changed the way the future unfolded completely. The UNEC became the UNSC instead, slip space was discovered, the pfhor may never have become involved or could have evolved along totally different lines. Now this also discounts statements from the developers themselves that in early production halo started out as a marathon sequel and therefore shared much DNA before they decided to tell a different story. The original developers themselves said by the end they viewed Halo as a distant but connected parallel instance of the marathon universe. This of course has been further broken down by 343's involvement.

For me the Cortana letters are the strongest argument that at some point Halo and Marathon were linked. The Cortana presented in them is clearly very different from the Cortana in the final release of Halo, the letters seem to imply that she's much older than the Cortana we know in the Halo games. However she speaks in the same sarcastic tone Durandal did, using the same terminal style. They predate the purchase by microsoft, and contain references to the stages of AI Rampancy (although this would later be used in Halo) "There will be no more Sadness. No more Anger. No more Envy.", possibly the W'rkncacnter "I have begun to sense rumblings of a worse fate yet to come. I can recall a sun - black, but shining - and the creatures that inched along its fiery tracks." However it's also entirely possible this is just bungie being bungie, even with a fair number of games under their belt at that point they were venturing into new 3d territory and were still largely made up of fairly young developers. It makes sense they would fall back on what they know to build their foundations even if they never intended to release it as a Marathon sequel. Either way it's undeniable that Marathon has its fingerprints all over the Halo franchise, and even to an extent the Destiny franchise

Matt Colville recently did a video on this. I think the first Halo game was originally meant to connect to Marathon . . . when they presented at 1999 Macworld. Once Microsoft and Xbox came into picture, there was no way they could connect to a game series for the Macintosh. So by the time CE came out, they were distinct properties, even if early on they wanted to make it a Marathon sequel (or prequel even).

Ultimately they are connected, but less in the sense that they are one cohesive universe and more in the sense of Stephen King's Dark Tower series or Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion collection. This isn't really theory anymore ever since Bungie came out and said directly, in collaboration with 343 and microsoft that they were all part of the same Paraverse through their 30th Anniversary event in Destiny 2. Even when it was just a theory, it was a very strong one, and supported not only by pieces of lore like the end screen for marathon Infinity ("you were dead a thousand times... you are destiny"), the plot of Infinity which ends up giving your character the ability to shape reality as they will by manipulating time, Myth's existence, the Sleeping Gods and Jjaro in Marathon and Pathways, and the connections between the psyche of the Master Chief and the Security Officer... But a Bungie Dev also once told us that master Chief was an incarnation of the Security officer. Again, it's a multiverse in the style of Stephen King and Michael Moorcock's work. This is made pretty clear in some of Marathon, Destiny and Myth's deeper lore but the narrative seems to go along the lines of the following, and yes, I am putting a bit of dramatic spin on this as I go to make it more interesting to read: At the start of creation there was one entity and two primordial forces that later developed consciousness. The Star Horse, that is, a manifestation of the author/bungie, the Light and the Dark. The Light was a force of creation, energy, potential and complexity incarnate. The Dark was entropy, death, cold. It was the force that bound reality to matter and substance. Between the two forces, at the behest of their creator, a divine interplay began. A flower game in which Light and Dark made countless worlds and allowed patterns to form. The patterns were civilizations and the flowers worlds. Eventually one of the two forces became too dominant in the pattern. Which is not clear given the unreliable nature of the narrators, but eventually the entities that were behind the Light and the Dark came to blows. Manifesting themselves in the game so that they might tip the scales in their favor. Light and Dark, Forerunner and Flood, Jjaro and W'rkncacnter, Traveler and Witness. They made waves in reality. The waves were battles and the battles were waves. Endlessly destroying one another again and again across the cosmos. And the Light won. It imprisoned many of its foes and destroyed the rest. All except one. In one of the many forgotten battles the Light and Dark fought with one another, a being of darkness found itself crippled. Wounded. Unconscious. Dreaming. It drifted, forgotten amongst the stars, until it landed on some backwater world in the Orion Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy inhabited by unremarkable saurian creatures of little intelligence and no Paracausal power to speak of. A blip on the radar. Its descent nearly destroyed the saurians entirely, and as the eons passed this gave way to the rise of mammals on this blue marble. Mammals which eventually evolved into apes, who learned how to use tools and developed societies and waged war with one another over resources, honor, love, pride, etc., etc., etc. Until one day the Sleeping God began to awaken once more, and as it stirred the Light felt its presence. It used its servants to reach out across the cosmos to the race of apes that had arisen on this rock so that they might delay the W'rkncacnter's awakening. Meanwhile the Sleeping God began to dream. forming a pyramid like structure around itself and bringing its nightmares into reality. Eventually after at least one prior attempt the apes heeded the servants of the Light, the beings they called the Jjaro, and sent a team of their finest warriors to the crash site. Only one of which made it into the depths alive. As he fought, this man, this soldier, was caught in a cosmic struggle. Dying and failing and succeeding and starting back again and again. He stopped the apocalypse and didn't, he perished with the Sleeping God and didn't, he failed and didn't, all at once across countless timelines. And in the process his soul was riven from him. He became semi-conscious of his manipulations and learned, subconsciously, how to use it to his advantage. He became the Hero of Ages. Roland, Beowulf, Gilgamesh, a man with a thousand names who would be called a thousand more before the world grows cold and dim. In one reality he succeeded and was conscripted into a cybernetics program using gifts from the Jjaro. Being indoctrinated into the fourth iteration of Battleroids. Over the course of his adventures, he was assigned to the Marathon, caught up in an interstellar war, and flung once again by cosmic forces beyond his nderstanding across timelines. But this time he knew what was happening. He knew what was at stake. He knew how to eat the path before him. And he did so. From there he continued across countless other realities, helping to shape them as they formed rather than just being a silent participant. He was destiny, he was lucky, and he made his own fate. He manifested again and again, each time taking a similar shape: the Security Officer, Connaught, Konoko, the Master Chief. Each an agent striving for balance between the forces of Light and Dark and each a delight to the Star Horse. Now, in the seventh universe, Destiny, he manifests again. This time as a Guardian of humanity. One who will, if all goes as expected, mantle both the Light and the Dark and become something more than either of them. He will shackle them to reality and put a stop to their senseless violence. At least, that's the hope.

Ultimately ignoring these connections and dismissing them as purely easter eggs despite stated intent on part of the developer and narrative threads from multiple entries in each series is asinine. Furthermore assuming that they exist in the same timeline/universe is equally ignorant. It's theoretically possible that some elements of technology were developed later, but not only does Tau Ceti show up in Halo as a Covenant stronghold, Slipspace travel was invented two hundred years before the marathon's commissioning. But they most certainly are connected in a very real sense as far back as Marathon Infinity. Not just with references and easter eggs, but in the sense that inter-dimensional travel between them is possible and characters leave imprints on reality which manifest in the next cycle. Hell, a MIDA member traveled through a broken down teleportation gate on mars, landed in the Destiny universe, and left behind his journal, rifle and submachine gun for a Guardian to find. The man mentions Bernard Strauss. This particular piece of evidence is older than this video. Also, again, more recently, we have a Battle Rifle and a Magnum, complete with a UNSC cryo pod in Destiny's 30th Anniversary. I don't know how much clearer you need to get.

The tech may have existed for a while, but the ship wasn’t a standard build. & the data that the long term journey could provide would still be valuable enough to not call the whole trip off. & there’s also the probability that during the war, contact may have been severed & the ship was assumed lost/destroyed? I’m probably forgetting a few vital details, but either way, Bungie said “They ain’t connected” so at most, it’s a head canon that gives the stories a sort of greater sense of size & meaning.

See, I never understood the whole Halo & Marathon connection speculations. I don't think they're in the same universe. They are distinctly their own universes. There never really was any aside from easter eggs, nods, references, or inside jokes dispersed throughout the Halo games. Bungie just acknowledged that Marathon was essentially the catalyst for Halo's creation for very obvious reasons. Though that's not to say the theories I see every now & again aren't interesting. On the contrary. Thanks for making this.

@Edmitsu
@Edmitsu 2 года назад
They exist in Halo. 343 considers U.E.G canon. Source is the 2021 Halo Encyclopedia. Which says the UEG is humanity’s central government and the UNSC’s job is to ensure the security of Earth’s territories and holdings. The UEG also supervises the UNSC. During the covenant human war the UNSC was given full power by the UEG via martial law. After the war they retook leadership.

I think Marathon and Destiny are in the same universe or will be eventually based on bungie’s decision. The Witch queen is apparently the end of all the Destiny story so far. Have a strong feeling the Pfhor and everything they enslaved to go along with it will be the next enemy. They need something new because they’ve reused and recycled every race many times. Rather than come up with brand new races in the Bungie verse, why not take something they already have that most people don’t know about? Might be wrong but makes sense especially with the marathon story. Destiny is all about the Traveler but we really know nothing about it and whats inside. What if it is a sleeping ground or prison for a W'rkncacnter? Just a Theory for all the nerds out there.

Back in CE you’d be able to make the case they were connected because the lore wasn’t very fleshed out. But, with Halo 2 definitely not because the Forerunners were ancient humans and not just another word for the Jjaro or some other ancient species. The timeline of events doesn’t really match up. There’s a lot of shared lore and themes between the two. But, this is more of just Bungie recycling old ideas and referencing their previous work.

Idk, the original intent of halo was that it was a marathon prequel. The UNSC (United Nations Space Command) becomes the UESC (United Earth Space Council) implying earth United and marathon is in the future. A Spartan was also a precursor to the mjolnir, think of the armor and enhancements as eventually being combined later. among a lot of other things it's pretty clear that was the intent, and their are some unconfirmed dev comments about it. When the sequels to halo came out some of it was dropped and halo became more of a spiritual successor due to its success. This guy isn't wrong but he's also delusional, CE was literally a marathon prequel

obviously theres a conections, marathon is the lesser version of halo, a smaller company, with less time and less money tho make a lore and universe, yes there can be a conection if bungie wanted its really easy to do, but theres no reason to, because Halo is actually a reimagination of marathon, a better version with better carachters and history, the vision they always had for a game but couldnt do because they didnt have the means to in the time, the thing is that halo is full of similarities to marathon wich is obvious because halo is marathon 3.0.

Man you speak like an pseudo-expert. Some of Bungie's beats and lore patterns are there in Halo, but Marathon's story is a lot deeper and more intricate and deals with a lot of meta-references to the player and their previous game, Pathways into Darkness and Myth. Halo is a lot more straightforward and is obviously more military science fiction rather than that hard meta science fiction of Marathon.
