Do HF multiband antennas really work? - MoonrakerGPA80 installed and tested

I have moaned for ages about my location being cramped for an HF antenna. Well I bite the bullet and invest in the Moonraker GPA80. Is is just a converted CB 27Mhx antenna? Or is it a genuinely useful multi-band HF antenna. I list my experiences and installation and testing. Could this be a good antenna for your location, especially of you do not have much of a garden or live in a flat (apartment). This is not an incentivised review in any way. I bought this with my own hard earned money.

Thank you for your work. I'm 75 this year and just getting back into the same passion I see you exhibit. I don't have an antenna up yet on my limited property size but I'm very inspired by your projects. I have been collecting older tube generation ham radios for quite some time and just now getting into cleaning them up and finding or making a space to work on them. Best Regards for now and know you have inspired me to get busy. Sincerely, 73's Joe KG7DTF

I came across your video and I thought I would comment as I also live in a bungalow. Mine is cut into the bottom of a hill, so its not as good a locaton as yours. I worked 102 countries last year on 10-50w and a mix of SSB, CW and FT8/4. My antenna is a fan dipole in the loft, cut for 20m, 17m and 12m. The 20m section is actually an end loaded 10m dipole as I don't have room for a full size one. The dipole is in an inverted V configuration and because its in the loft its very low to the ground. I spent quite a bit of time getting rid of electrical noise. Part of that was fitting a proper 1:1 balun at the feed point and a line isolator at the radio end. I made my line isolator from 15 ferrite beads that fit tight onto RG58 coax. I don't need a tuner on 20m,17m or 12m but the SWR is under 3:1 on 15m and 10m so it works a bit with a tuner. I have even worked USA on 30m with the tuner! Obviously a loft antenna means no holes in the walls. I have a small hole in the ceiling above the radio. Even in rented accomodation you would get away with that as it could be filled in a few minutes if need be. I have been looking at the antenna you have as a possible additional antenna, but it seems the wrong length. When I calculated for that balun it came out at 24 feet, which incidentally is the same length as a Rybakov antenna (worth loking this up). K4OGO has the same antenna as you. He has found it worked best after he tuned it for minimum SWR (no tuner) on 20m. It might be worth fiddling with.

Thanks, it's early days yet and it seems to resonate at 28mhz which I can't TX on anyway. So it may need tweaking. The loft is small and low roof so impractical for anything. Time will tell.

@@tekmakerUK Its all down to efficiency really. I just worked the USA on 30m with my dipole even though its infinity SWR on that band.

Hi from Darwin, Looks like you may have a lot of noise from switched mode power supplies in your shack I ended up getting rid of all of mine and bought 2 Techtroic 20 amp power supplies (analogue). End of noise problems. Also for the tropical storm and other noise (like neighbours new fairy lights) Ibought an MFJ1026 noise canceller. Best investment I ever made.

Good to see a video on this antenna. Are you still using it and did you experiment further with it? I picked one up second hand, the fibreglass version and started experimenting with it. It worked better the longer the coax was so I made up some random radials going tho a large alligator clip and connected that to the PL259. That seemed to improve performance and cut out any RF coming into the shack. Grounding the mast I’m undecided if it achieved anything. Other people have mentioned using a 1:1 Line Isolator at the entry point of the shack but I haven’t tried that yet, like your wrapped balun. It’s not a bad antenna imo when you have limited space. Just 10 feet off the ground I’ve made reasonable contacts on voice and data, may see if there is any improvement raising it to 20 feet. 73

Yes, I had to remove the box with the Balun in at the antennas base due to it continually filling with water from the incoming wire. SO I drilled holes in it and turned it sideways and secured it so there is little ingress now and what does get in can drain/evaporate.

Good idea, I’ve heard a few people complain about water ingress. Not had that problem but I did seal the joints with self amalgamating tape, a drainage hole would still help with condensation build up though.

Interesting subject but the video is so difficult to understand. No structure, no chapter.

I can't script most of my stuff as I would have to do everything twice, it is done 'fly on the wall' so you see the issues I encounter. This can easily become a full time job for no reward apart from likes and I already have a full-time job. But I'll bear it in mind.
