As someone who spent most of his life terrified of horror games and now can easily play them, the things I noticed are that once the theme story or concept of the horror themed game starts getting more interesting and "cool", you immediately stop feeling afraid. For example, Dead Space's weapons and the combat system is SO cool that the game loses a lot of what makes it scary for me. Another thing I noticed is that horror is something you can totally get "numb" about. The more you play/watch it, the more it stops being scary but if you take a break from it, like a few months or a year it becomes scary again, at least in my case. Like, if I play Resident Evil 2 Remake after a 6 month break from horror games I'll be terrified for a few hours but if after RE2R I get into a horror game streak it quickly starts to lose it's scariness. Except Resident Evil 7 and PT, those games are crazy IMO.
Honestly,So long as an horror game captures the whole "Fear of the unknown" feeling right. they pretty much hardly needed to be scary at all just to be good, hence why i mostly prefer Psychological Horror games over Survival Horror games. Take Spec ops the line for example It's a simple straight forward third person military action cover shooter, Disguised as a Dread inducing Psychological Horror game with 0 jump scares whatsoever.
I use to hate horror games because of invincible enemies, hiding mechanics and cheap jumpscares. Until i played games like darkwood, layers of fear, stalker and then realized there are good horror games and there are cheap shty horror games. Its same with movies it easy to make a cheap horror movie but making a good one not so much. Personaly i think being scared is just one thing more important part is atmosphere that outlast a single encounter.
The original resident evil from 1996 had me creeped out at the first cut scene where you come across the zombie munching on some poor victim and it slowly turns it's head and looks at you creeped me out to the point where I had to shut off my PlayStation for a few minutes before playing it again LOL. Yeah that scene was creepy to me.
@@taketheleep It's still a classic scary video game and one that certainly changed everything when it came to horror video games. I compare that to Tarman from The return of the living dead it's like you know something is going to happen but not being prepared for it LOL. And the jump scares was a great added effect.
This was great and it seems all your other videos are as well. Please keep it up! Honestly shocked to see you don't have tens of Thousands subscribers already.
Thanks! Believe it or not the voice acting video was actually the first one with this mic, I've just gotten a lot better working with and properly processing it.
I love horror in every medium except when it comes to games. I’ll watch others play horror games, but with my anxiety playing a game that freaks you out is just too nerve wracking for me. But I wish we could get more horror-themed games. I love the atmosphere and art direction of horror games but want them with mechanics that aren’t completely disempowering
I play them for the atmosphere and the overall presentation. I don't find them scary as in I literally feel frightened. It's just an incredibly immersive genre when done correctly and that makes for a great gameplay experience.
There's an old isometric pc game, where you have to kill waves of aliens, like little ones and big ones, there were moments where the lights were off and it scare the fuck outta me. You could pick different weapons and i think they would come in waves. Does anyone know what game it might be from my description?
I think that's fair. Do you judge whether or not a game is "supposed" to be scary based mostly on marketing and how it's presented in trailers/previews? Or more what you've heard from other people who've played it?
No, because nine times out of ten, focusing on the horror so much causes the game to be extremely boring to play. Worst case scenario, they become so focused on being 'scary' that they stop being scary in the first place.
They don't need to be scary. They should b at least uncanny, creepy, unsettling, just like PT. If they focus on horror and fear too much, they're just boring.
While I do agree with the premise, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the inverse either. A scary game doesn’t necessarily need to be fun, and that’s okay. It can be hard for those kinds of games to not become annoying, but everyone’s threshold there differs from person to person. It’s a tightrope that developers have to carefully manage. No matter what, marketing should be upfront about what kind of game something is. I do think you were kind of unfair to games like Outlast and especially Alien: Isolation. Outlast has more going for it than just jumpscares. There are some interesting themes at play, and what you’re doing does get changed a fair amount. Yes, you’re always doing basic stealth, but how that plays out isn’t always the same. I will say that Outlast’s DLC and Outlast 2 were a lot better at keeping things fresh. As for Isolation, you can fight back in that game. It seems like you really misrepresented that game. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed the video and its overall message. I just didn’t agree with all of your points.
Oo this is an interesting point especially considering I almost didn't include the "games are made to be fun" line. I know that might not necessarily be true based on the experience the dev is trying to create, but in those cases they better be excelling at whatever that experience is, which is something I think a lot of horror games struggle with. And thanks for the counterpoints about Alien Isolation. Biggest issue there for me was the game started to feel fatiguing because the scariness wore off and was no longer able to carry the weight. But I never expect everyone to agree with all my points so I appreciate the thoughtful comment!
The scariest game I’ve ever played is cod warzone 100% the anxiety n rush that game gives me when it’s narrowing down is insane😂 like I’m actually bouta lose my Life
I've seen a majority of people describe Alien: Isolation as one of the best Horror games. Then I see videos like these that show it's just a walking simulator. What's up with that? My favorite horror game is Resident Evil 4(Because of the fun gameplay loop). For actual fear factor, my favorite is "The Forest". It's a Survival game with Horror elements but those elements are done right, because it genuinely scares me. Dead Space would be #1 if the scariness didn't wear off halfway through the game.
I wouldn't say it's a walking simulator necessarily, it's definitely got some more complex things going on, but at times it can feel like a "sneaking simulator" which to me got old pretty quickly. It does do a really good job of creating a creepy atmosphere so I understand why so many people love it, I just felt like I wanted to progress through it at a normal pace and the game kept slowing you down without much reward for doing so. Have not played The Forest but have also heard good things about it!
Umm yes!? What kind of question is that? It's a horror game, it's in the name. Does comedy need to be funny to be considered comedy!? Does syfy need to have syfy things in it to be syfy!? I mean granted most horror isn scary. Either that or it takes a lot to scare me. But it should have things that fits the theme. Like people dieing or a threat of death. And change it up. Horror is so predictable. 1 black person maybe 2 1 Asian And/or Latinx And about 3-4 white people One of them has really big boobs. One that looks like the girl next door One that is always a jock And some average, cishet white guy. Black people die first Asian/latenx is 50/50 if both are in there but they die next Then the girl with the boob or the Jock The average white guy and the white girl next door lives. More then likely at some point the white guy saves the white girl. For me if I was making my own I'll make it more realistic and keep everyone guessing. I'd make it all white people. Here is why blacks, Asians and latenx Will take one look at the start of the situation and be like "Nope we seen this shit before we know how this ends for us, we put!" And because white people don't lock their doors and be like "hey look a creepy house out in the middle of no where with no cellphone reception. Let ask them for help to let them know we are hear and we're easy victims😁" Oh one other thing the white girl with the boobs is coming with us besides if we start getting chased we need to use someone as bate. Lol And besides blacks, Asians and latenx Most likely we're from the inner city. Well at least I am Wich means we know how to hot wire car's and picklocks Or at least I do. But what I definitely know is we all can spot danger and we all have street knowledge. And that is why if I go anywhere with white people I take my own car. Because knowing them they want to investigate that strange sound 😂 or run upstairs to get away from the killer.
