Do I Have a Good Conscience? 

When you start fighting with your conscious then it's time to go to confession

I took on a traditional catholic fast and drawing the Catholic church. I felt a strong calling from God to do this for my family and for our world. First week was rough but with prayer everyday, especially when I get "hungry"I feel that hunger with prayer. I pray for the ppl of Venezuela

Guilt puts you in the past, Anxiety in the future and Conscience in the present. Be always in the presents of God.

The good thing about not being perfect, is you have something to keep working on.

This is a trick I learned for fasting, I go to school, practice, and have church meetings throughout the day and I can get really hungry. When it comes to the point where I feel I can’t go any longer I give myself 5 min into deep prayer and my body is not full by food but my the Holy Spirit and I can go on with my day stronger than ever. What a gift Fr Mike has and I’m thrilled social media allows it to be shared.

Conscience is one of those sensors God gives all of us though it can become seared in some. I pray everyone receives the Holy Spirit which makes us totally new people in Christ. God uses conscience and creation as lights to help us along the path to salvation. Once the Holy Spirit convicts us unto repentance, we arrive in salvation and begin the sanctification process. Praise God!

I feel like I have a God given conscience, because I feel remorse when I sin.

When I offer the Confession, I sometimes say, "Conscience varies from person to person, and simple self-examination always carries the risk of ignorance and self-rationalization. However, when the Holy Spirit illuminates your conscience, you come to realize even the dark aspects of yourself that you might have deceived. Therefore, whenever you enter the confessional, always open your heart to the Holy Spirit and seek His guidance."

I hear you Father Mike. I want to live by the church's teaching. Though, I often feel some of the teaching has not grown with today's society. I would not be the mother I am today without help of fertility treatments. I am a nurse and often have to work on the weekends, a moral sin to miss church. This saddens me and I am struggling trying to find my place in this. I am a strong Catholic. But, as I grow into adulthood and raise my children in the church, I am questioning some of the teaching. This has never happened before in my Catholic schooling....I am looking for direction and guidance.

"SPOT ON" Fr. Mike. No it was not super long, it was "SUPER" and I appreciate you so very much. There are so many times when I've struggled with my conscience in knowing if it okay for this or that. I've also questioned authoritative figures in my life but would always try and go with my gut feeling or conscience and ask (in my heart for certain Saints to help) for guidance.

My narcissistic father has recently shut down my voice and my ability to stay healthy in the living!

After reading about the 850 million animals raised and slaughtered for food and the horrific suffering they endure I stopped eating meat and dairy. It was a pointed and conscience decision that I made nearly 2 decades ago and will continue for as long as I live. Fasting started out as a challenge for me...sort of a game. Interestingly, I found it very freeing not having to think or prepare food and knowing I could go days without food and be fine. The longer I went (I've gone only 5 days on water only so far) the more 'spiritual' it felt. I had the luxury of eating if I chose though and often wonder how challenging it would feel to me under different circumstances. I do notice that when I begin eating how much I appreciate the most simple of foods like garden greens or most of all, foraging wild food. I am imperfect in so many ways... I do enjoy the challenge of working to be a better more conscientious person. Thank you for giving us 'food for thought'.

Thanks for the last point you made, however painful to say there is a lot of truth to it. It breaks my heart, but in some cases we must stand up for the Church even when the priest won't.

I have a sensitive conscience. I have had difficulty keeping my Lenten fast. I have compensated in other ways. I have not been to confession in months. It's hard admitting your faults and repenting. I have an ego I hate being told what to do.

We are all fallen. Sinful. It doesn't matter if we changed our sex, cheated on our spouses, lied, murdered, stole something. The Bible is clear that a violation of one commandment is the breaking of all of the law. It doesn't do us any good to look down on someone for their sins and mistakes. My problem is that when I point a finger at you, I have three more pointing back at me. I applaud all of us, because we are all trying to break away from sin. I'm grateful for confession even sometimes the Priest tells me a Truth which I honestly didn't want to hear. I like to follow the Saints. All of their lives were struggles very similar to our own. St. Ignatius has Spiritual exercises. My understanding is we are suppose to see Jesus in everyone and everything. By following that just a few days I have found blessings. I'm more generous to someone who looks like Jesus. I'm more polite to someone who reminds me of our Savior. I'm less likely to stare at a beautiful woman since I know she represents the Mother of God. I'm quicker to diffuse an argument with someone who is a brother or sister in Christ going through struggles like I am. Back to St. Ignatius and his exercises. One exercise he has can be done twice a day. At about noon and just before bed. It's called The Daily Examine. You can look it up on the St. Ignatius website. It's very easy to do. In a nutshell you are examining the past few hours or the past day. Where did I see Jesus today? How did Jesus live through me today? How could I have been better? What did I learn? Don't follow me, go to that website and follow their example. That's a very good way to help you with your conscience. At least it helps me. God bless.

A 'good conscience' is an 'informed conscience.,' and an informed conscience is far, far more than merely a matter of preference or opinion. It is the long-established teaching of the Church that, in matters of faith and morals, the ultimate authority for the individual is his or her "informed conscience." I share my view of “informed conscience” with Saint John Paul II who dealt with the issue of the supremacy of the 'informed conscience' in one part of his book Crossing the Threshold of Hope (Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1994; p 190-191). In his book, John Paul II wrote “If a man is admonished by his conscience - even an erroneous conscience, but one whose voice appears to him as unquestioningly true - he must always listen to it. What is not permissible is that he culpably indulge in error without trying to reach the truth. If [Cardinal] Newman places conscience above authority he is not proclaiming anything new with respect to the constant teaching of the Church. The conscience, as the [Second Vatican] Council teaches, 'is man's sanctuary and most secret core, where he finds himself alone with God, whose voice resounds within him.' " John Paul II goes on to explain that the supremacy of conscience has been the Church’s teaching ‘from the beginning’ and “echoes the teaching of the Fathers and the theological tradition from Saint Thomas Aquinas to John Henry Newman.” It is to be noted that the importance of 'informing' one's conscience requires on-going effort, including prayer and meditation on Scripture and Church teaching, as well as the consultation of a variety of relevant sources on any given issue. It is NOT simply a matter of personal preference, but the making of a decision based on careful consideration and study of all the factors and sources available to one. The supremacy of conscience presupposes that one has sincerely searched diligently for the moral truth pertaining to the issue one is facing. One would do this by consulting sources of moral wisdom, including, but not limited to, Scripture, Church teachings, theologians, philosophers, relevant scientific authorities and so on. The process must take place in the context of prayer and meditation while listening attentively for the voice of God speaking in what Catholics call the "inner forum." The most authoritative source of all is, of course, the teachings and deeds of Jesus as recorded in the Gospels.. As John Paul II explains, what is not permitted is to ‘stifle’ one’s "informed conscience” for any reason, including Catholic doctrine. As John Paul II notes, neither the Church, nor the instruction of Catholic doctrine, can or should or could replace ‘informed conscience.’ Putting ‘Catholic doctrine’ ahead of the teachings of the Messiah who is supposedly the basis and inspiration of those teachings would be a classic case of putting the cart before the horse or, in this case, according the created priority over the Creator. One starts from the presumption that the Church, having many capable minds for considering moral theology, is likely to be correct, but that ‘default’ position is not carved in stone when other data seems to contradict what the Church teaches. When a Church teaching ‘doesn’t ring true,’ the person must take great care to inform his or her conscience as best he or she can before taking a position of ‘conscientious objection’ to a teaching or position. This requires much time in prayer and meditation on Scripture as well as serious study of the teaching or position the Church has taken and the reasons for it.
