For the first question, I just want to say this: Although he said you have to be able to diferentiate the milk from the water, technically he didn't say they both had to be in the bowl at the same time, so you could've just put the water in, drank it, and then put in the milk, right?
I think they likely both die because if the dude with a gun can react to him stepping off there will be a small window where he can shoot and kill him, likewise if the dude shoots him then he will get blown off the plank with the force of the revolver but apart from those scenarios, I'd say that's a good answer

Theres an even better solution for the cake one. 1. Cut the cake in 2 equal pieces as in the video 2.stack these 2 pieces and cut right down the middle now you have 4 pieces with 2 cuts 3. now stack all of these pieces and cut once more giving you 8 pieces. Also using this method you are not breaking any rules and everybody has a identical piece.
for the cake one, i was thinking to cut the cake in quarters (2 slices used), then stack the pieces on top of each other and then make one big cut down all of them. It's kind of a dumb answer considering its difficulty but i think it kinda makes sense
