After two months of hard work, we’re finally getting close to putting our #sailboat back in the water. So much for that one-month goal?! But hey, we knew that was a pie-in-the-sky goal.
That said, this REALLY could be our last week of #BoatRefit projects! Our goal this week is to finish waxing, remove our old underwater lights, install new underwater lights, check all the batteries, service the generator, install the new water purifier, replace the defunct radar, inspect and repair all the lines/sails.
Piece of cake. Ohhh, cake. I would love some chocolate cake right now. Wait, we don’t have time for cake, we gotta get cracking!
WHO ARE WE?
We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living #OffTheGrid and exploring the world for 10 years.
Our first six years of #travel were an epic road trip around North America.
Now we’re on a #sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not!
Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild #adventures and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible.
We’re two ordinary people that just so happen to live an extraordinary life.
And this is why we publish our lives on the world wide web. We share in hopes of inspiring you to find your adventure.

Not really relevant to this video but I wanted you to know. I had a patient in the hospital where I work about 6 weeks ago (I am a nurse). She didn’t feel well and wasn’t really that friendly. I usually try to find some common ground to talk to patients about but was having a hard time. Some how we ended up discussing You Tube and what we watch and we both watched Gone with the Wynns! It was sooooo nice! Anyway she was transferred off my unit within 24 hours cuz she wasn’t doing very well and subsequently passed away in about a week. Thank you is all I want to say!

Hey guys lookin good. As for your bird babies...put the nest and all in a open box set on its side so mamma can see her nest and eggs...place it directly below where they're found on the deck...she'll be nervous at first but will come back to them in an hour or so...this way you can still work on the sail and she can hatch out her eggs...when they're hatched you can place them on the boat next to you in the same spot...she'll find them because they're watching you. I've had to do this a couple of times with songbirds nesting in my stuff in our carport.

@@gonewiththewynns You made a good choice! I drove 11 hours to bring my 5 year old cat to my Moms house for her and let my neighbor adopt my other 5 yr old cat.. I had rescued a bunch of kittens, my dog died, my Dad died, my friend died and I was getting overwhelmed.. I still miss my cats. I felt like I abandoned them but my cat Halo is now across the street and she is super happy and a spoiled happy princess! I have much respect for the both of you and how you just do your best in every situation. With every challenge now, I tell myself to just focus on one thing at a time like you guys do...It really helps! 👍⛵ Sweet Sailing ahead! bytheway, I totally want to go to Tonga now and surf in Fiji. Now that you have it waxed, two products I love to maintain the EASY way. Not sponsored, just a big fan. 1. Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions Ceramic Spray. Long lasting protection and spray on/wipe off no buffing. 2. McKee’s 37 Hydro Blue SIO2 spray. I use it after every wash (once per month or so). Spray on, rinse off. Lasts for 2-3 months. Great stuff. Ps - the boats looking great!

What happens when you cross a Leatherman with a Swiss Army Knife? You get a Swisstool... a bit more clunky than the Leatherman but as close to indestructible as they could make it. Comes with a lifetime warranty (I needed to make use of it when I managed to break mine after 8 years of hard use, they didn't replace it, they repaired it! Impressive! :-)) Since then, I've had it for another 16 years, with no issues.

Which is how I found out I'm allergic to wasp stings . I might need a stripper :) Anyway , the fire brigade ! removed the nest for me . It was about the same size as yours and they said there were a maximum of 6 wasps for that size . Which is 7 too many

Nikki, don't worry, if you hadn't noticed the mama bird running in and out of the sail pack, it's not likely that the nest was occupied, regardless of the presence of the eggs. As birds tend to mate during the spring, it's likely that the nest had been abandoned for months, depending on the specific type of bird, and latitude you're in.

Seeing as they are in Tonga.... it is spring there.
@stephanieellis5399
@stephanieellis5399 3 года назад
I agree that they'd probably have seen the mama flying in and out. But in the tropics there never really is a spring. However, with hurricane season coming upon them it is unlikely that a bird would lay a clutch and then have to protect and feed them during the storms.
@donaldsmith3337

I have to agree when they started moving around the boat on a regular basis, the nest was abandoned. ...imo.
@geraldthomas9253
@geraldthomas9253 3 года назад
@@donaldsmith3337 Had the nest been occupied when they returned to the boat, the mama would have dived them whenever they were too close to the nest. I had it happen to me once or twice climbing trees in my youth.
@philgray1023

In warmer areas we have birds that mate all year round. Blocking the welcome Swallows and House Martins is a thing you have to do. Note that the House Martins will unpick your stitching to get in. I've always found spinning Clive Palmer DVDs on a string puts them off. In fact Clive Palmer DVDs put everything off.

Have had a Gerber multi-tool similar to yours for 20 years and it's been awesome! Mine doesn't have the corrosion that yours does, but hasn't been used in the Marine environment either. :) Nothing against Leatherman, but they aren't any better, in my experience. Also, most Leatherman multi-tools are very hard on the hands when using the pliers and squeezing the handles (some are downright painful). Gerber, on the other hand, has a completely different design that is genius and much easier on the hands.

million dollar idea...a long pole with a height adjustable swivel joint to attach the buffer..just swing the buffer back forth to wax the hull on the pole as the pivot point...it holds the weight of the buffer instead of the arms.
@tomluque
@tomluque 3 года назад
Buffing solution for weaklings. Create a weighted counterbalance to offset the weight of the buffer. To move length wise, use a large block to ride on top of the deck rail or safety line. For the vertical motion of buffer, hang a block from the rail block. The hanging block would have a line attached to the buffer and the other end to the counterweight. Works like an elevator. Just a thought, I have not tried this on my 19ft sailboat.

Next time, suspend the buffer from the lifeline with a bungee. It helps take some of the weight of the buffer off your arms. Especially if you wax from the dinghy with the boat in the water. The bungee will save your buffer if you accidentally drop it.

Tip for next time you need to polish the hull - attach both ends of 5 Mtr of 3/8” bungee to a halyard and put the other end loop on the handle of you polisher - pull up the halyard until the polisher is hanging just below the deck joint. The bungee takes out all the weight of the polisher and you can work up and down the hull side without stressing your arms.

I'm so grateful for your positive attitude. Every week the two of you just keep smiling and looking for the good in people and projects. It's a great example. Thank you for the wonderful content and I hope your holidays are special

Just a "TIP" clean your buffing pad often as it will gum-up, I use a screwdriver, at an angle with the direction of rotation and occasionally take it off and wash it with soapy water too, works much better . . .

Well done on the buffing Nikki, that’s a massive bit of work. Jason, your ability to get Down Under in that little cabinet is pretty versatile.

Guys use bees wax on your stitching for your sail covers to protect them. They will last longer

That's a lot of Beeswax! I think we'd have to order a 5 gallon jug!

Well guys it's been another Sunday morning with the Wynns. I've given up drinking coffee so none of that today but it's still my favorite Sunday morning activity. I wouldn't feel too bad about the bird's nest. You've been on the boat for over a month now and if you haven't seen momma bird coming and going she probably abandoned the nest long ago. Keep the good stuff coming.
