Oh jeez that’s a lot of deceased people. I think it was “6 teens murdered” though. That moment did make me laugh though. Like a slight dark humour moment.
I'm the same, I really can't stand domestic thrillers/suspense novels. I work in a very large bookstore chain and they keep pushing those books to my greatest disdain. So I curate displays of classic style mysteries and detective crime fiction to counterbalance the section 🤣
I want to thank you. I watched your best mysteries of 2023 mysteries youtube video and Richard Osman's fourth Thursday Club mystery was your top mystery for 2023. Based on your recommendation I read "The Last Devil to Die." I cried for whole chapters. It, too, is my favorite novel of 2023. Thank-you for recommending this wonderful, touching mystery novel.
I loved I Have Some Questions For You, stayed up until 5am finishing it in one sitting. But I agree it is improperly marketed, it’s 100% lit fic, which was what I was expecting having read the authors previous work. Great video as always and can’t wait for part 2!!
Thank you for saying no to Paris Apartment. It was hyped and so well rated, but man did it let me down so hard. I hated the main character and they mystery. Glad to see this validated!
Enjoyed The Plot, Razorblade Tears, The Maid, One by One, The Night Swim, Killers of a Certain Age, What Lies In The Woods, Falling, The Bandit Queens. Have a great week.
I read All The Dangerous Things because it was a BOTM pick and I absolutely loved it! On BOTM I loved it and I gave it a 5/5 stars! I’m really excited to read her debut novel!
When you got to His and Hers on the list and got this mischievous glint in your eye, I laughed so hard and thought, oh boy, here we go, lol. I was definitely hoping you'd pick it because even though I like Alice Fenney's books, I still find your spicy takes on them entertaining, lol. And hey, third time's the charm, or curse? lol. "Six teens murdered" I also laughed, but mostly because I also let out an intrigued (albeit less excited) "Oooh" 😆 I really enjoyed this video and the whole concept. I can't wait for the second part!
The premise of The Plot just makes me roll my eyes every time I hear it. I think I've seen too many authors comment on that person who comes up to them with this great opportunity! They have a terrific idea for a book. Guaranteed to be a bestseller. If the author just writes it for them, they'll split the profits 50/50! The Plot sounds exactly like that scenario to me.
I'm surprised you pick a Rebecca Makkai novel. I heard about that book from booktubers who enjoy reading lit fic so I figured it must be more of a lit fic than a mystery. Also love the stats!
The Rebecca Makkai is coming off my library TBR after hearing you say it's more lit-fic. I read strictly for entertainment and rarely find lit-fic to be my kind of entertainment. Oh well..... hopefully you'll have better luck in the next round and I'll find so something more to my taste then. I appreciate your ability to articulate what it is you like or don't about books because it helps me narrow down if it would work for me.
this is such a fun project! I was very very vaguely curious about I Have Some Questions For You so THANK YOU for the sample of how absolutely insufferable I would find the writing !!!
Glad to know which ones I don't need to worry about. I'm excited for you Deana Raybourn video, I'd love to know how the mystery is in one of the series because the romance did not work for me.
That's it, I am not buying another book until you review😊 ; I bought the new Makkai book based on the hype, and I am really struggling to finish. I like both thrillers and literary fiction but I find this book is failing in both genres. All I can say, at this point, is the book had great marketing.
Quick comment to say I really enjoyed this video and I admire how much you know about the mystery genre. I wasn’t totally sure how I felt about The Plot, either!! I put off rating it for months, and I think I ended up giving it 4 stars because I was like, if it put that much of a bug up my ass about how I even felt about it, it merited the recognition. 🤷🏼♀️ Weird reading experience!!
I read a Sally Hepsworth book awhile back "The Mother in Law'.. and it was very entertaining.. but I read it in my early years of reading thriller/mysteries so I should check out this particular book you read sometime soon.
i love litfic & mysteries/thrillers but i def went to i have some questions for you for like. a good litfic read lol i definitely wouldnt rec it for someone who's looking for an actual thriller
I think you might actually like The Last Flight or her other book Lies I Tell, probably more the latter. I like them because they don’t rely on tropes of the MC being dumb/an alcoholic/mental illness/etc.
A two-parter! how exciting! A shame this crop of books didn't fully pan out for you. And re: Thing We Do in the Dark, since you said you don't want to read on-page child abuse, continue to avoid that one. Loved it but woof it was intense.
I like Run Away more than The Boy From the Woods from Harlan Coben. I’d recommend the former as your first Coben. Those are the only two from him I’ve read, but Run Away has a great plot and good twists.
Our tastes are still the same, so I'm really curious about these! I think I absolutely 5 starred it, and you liked it a lot but found a few things you'd definitely change. It's the one aboard an old Dutch trade ship. (Writer of the 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle.)
I really loved The Push, I thought I wouldn't like it, thinking it is mother-daughter toxic relationship, but it is not what I thought at all. When I hear about BAParis, I cannot stop thiking about the Breakdown, it's not bad book, but I knew what would happen on page 12! Because it reminded me of an Agatha Christie book (and we know our Agatha so well 😆) That's why I'm putting off reading another book by her haha. You can try it sometime
“do i like goodreads most popular -“ no. for anything. i do not trust goodreads at all haha. interesting about kate alice marshall though. i really disliked rules for vanishing but really enjoyed these fleeting shadows, so i might five what lies in the woods a go.
The Plot.....oh, I want so much to skewer this book, author actually, but not wanting to write spoilers prohibits it. Suffice to say, I won’t read any thing else from her. Not sure how some of these made this list. I’d love to see a vlog from you on this 💕
Sally Hepworth the women is great! She's cute, has great style and is very funny Unfortunately, I haven't been drawn to many of her books. I need to try one ... but I am thinking it will be the current release, The Soulmate.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to read that new one for the GR nominees at the end of the year, so I'm more hopeful about it now that I enjoyed The Good Sister!
Speaking on KU and on different genre to boot highly recommend surprise gooder recommended by SBTB Carissa Broadbent duology "The Serpent and the Wings of Night". Kinda fantasy vampire magic save the kingdom BUT terrific world building characters decent twists pleasant diversion.
Harlan Coben is very enjoyable generally. He's a fun, quick read. The I Have Some Questions was giving me mis-marketed lit fiction vibes. Glad I now have confirmation. 😉 I have the Frieda McFadden, The Housemaid, on my TBR. I liked The Maid and I was getting some of those vibes from it. Foley and Feeney are Not for me. 😏 And I don't typically like a domestic thriller or missing/abused child scenario. I'm usually a more "classic mystery" reader. Give me a PI/detective or police procedural any day. Of course, I'm also a huge series reader too. So I do like Louise Penny though I'm not interested in her collaboration with Clinton. I like the Gamache series. I like Cleeves too. All of her series are enjoyable. I love Deborah Crombie's Kincade series. Or I need a busy body mystery solver or group of them, like Rita Mae Brown, Alexander McCall or Richard Osman. None of those were on my TBR radar, and they continue to be off the screen. 😂
I am so confused by Finlay Donovan Is Killing It because I have not seen a single review describe it as suspenseful or spooky/creepy at all. I've actually heard multiple people say that it's a really comical set up and that lightens the mystery a lot
I'm probably going to read it as a comedy with an action/suspense plot rather than a mystery thriller, if that makes sense. It doesn't sound like an actual mystery thriller to me
Oh, no! I read The Great Believers and loved it in spite of my weariness towards HIV/AIDS tragedy fiction and the clunkiness of the dual narrative. Maybe it was a case of her publisher trying to market her new book beyond the limits of its structure?
Wow, this is the first time I’ve read multiple books featured in a video! I read The Plot, I Have Some Questions For You, and Pretty Things. And…. I thought they were all meh at best and aggravating at worst. 🤦🏻♀️
So even if “I Have Some Questions For You” was a shorter book, it wouldn’t have made a difference in execution of plot or your rating? Edit: Good luck for your round 2
I'm too excited that you watch Sister Wives. I didn't like The Plot either. It doesn't even make sense! You can't steal a plot. That's not even how writing works. If he'd published his ex-student's actual writing then that would be bad.
