If only more people could describe things like this without over complicating it. For real though somebody give this man an award for making this cut and dry

Keep in mind that this does not apply when your internet provider provides internet via ethernet. In those cases you just want a router.

@@billkincer4256 I think any router should be able to broadcast wifi as long as you have some form of wired internet plugged into it.

When your using a separate router you need to make the modem into bridge mode so it can allow to distribute the signal to your router

Oh so i still need a modem if i want to get a new faster router? Btw does a older modem affect a newer and faster router?
@markmaldia9999
@markmaldia9999 3 года назад
To answer your questions. (Oh so i still need a modem if i want to get a new faster router?) if i understand your question correctly the answer is NO. remember what the guys said you only need router if you want more computer to talk to each other in ONE NETWORK. if you dont have any other computer that need to talk to each other then modem will suffice it already. (Btw does a older modem affect a newer and faster router?) this is a little bit complicated to talk as it include a NETWORKING AND LAN SPEED. technically if you want a faster LAN network then you need a newer router. older model tend to have lower LAN throughput speed. and so on and so fort. its a long discussion lol.

So basically a modem is only used to convert from coaxial to Ethernet correct? If I have Ethernet running from the wall I don’t need one of these?
@bickleyjonas6145
@bickleyjonas6145 3 года назад
That's just the problem. I'm waiting for an internet solution that you don't need all that coaxial cable into the modem, then modem into the router business. I'd say 1880s coaxial technology is a little outdated now...

My personal advice is never go with the modem router combo. Always have them segregated as two devices. My experience with router/modem combos are they suck.

If you are looking for high performance and a customizable experience, separate devices are better. However, modem router combos are more convenient, easier to set up, and save space.

Yeah if they provide an Ethernet Jack for you then you can plug straight to your router. If that doesn't work you may want to contact your ISP.

These videos are confusing. I have a fiber connection and idk if my current device is a modem or a router. I looked up the model and some people say it's a modem while say it's a router. I bought a router and I can't connect to the internet with it but I can't connect to the internet even if it's running of lan off my current modem or router what ever thing. So I can't tell if I need a modem or a router or what ever. So I'm returning the current router I just bought because it doesn't seem to be working.
@JJFlores197
@JJFlores197 3 года назад
What device do you have? Fiber internet doesn't use a modem. Its usually a media converter. But that depends on your ISP and how they handle fiber internet. Some providers will run fiber to your house and install a media converter where the fiber ends and then it has a copper handoff. Basically that means an ethernet cable is plugged into the media converter and then into a router. On the other hand, some ISPs will give you a gateway box which has everything built-in.

Does anyone know why I can't find a DSL modem at retailers like Best Buy? I can only find modems for cable internet. Some routers say they have an "integrated modem" but won't have a DSL port on it, it'll only have WAN and LAN ethernet ports. Can I plug the DSL line into the WAN port or am I stuck with the modem-router combo my ISP gave me? It is SERIOUSLY frustrating me.

You can configure your router to be independent as long as you get the dns servers logged in through your routers settings. This video couldn't be more misleading.

@markmaldia9999
@markmaldia9999 3 года назад
as he explain and to make it more understandable router mean to connect 2 or more computer in one network. to make one computer talk to another computer WITHOUT using INTERNET. which is called or more common as LOCAL AREA NETWORK. Local Area Network means computers connected to each other WITH IN YOUR HOUSE or PLACE.
