I have pocket carried my Swiss Champ nearly every day since I bought it new in 1985. It has saved my bacon many many times !
@OutsideTheTargetDemographic
Side benefit - the Swiss Champ gives you most the tools Victorinox offers, and over the course of, say, a month or so, you can decide which tools you like, and buy a smaller, more-practical-to-you, model.

Idk how many people dislike the hook, but personally, it's my favorite. I used it to take multiple bags of trash down, and once used my belt to bundle a lot of firewood and used the hook to carry it. Also, use it to take the cage cover thing off of an above ground fire pit. My favorite tool by far

I once used the hook to ancor a cable on top of a cupboard while installing something on the underside of the wall mounted cupboard

Most people are wimps.... No wonder people are not prepared people talk about EDC but wont carry anything over 3 ounces.....jeez men in older times carried tools or trapping gear all on them including a big heavy fixed blade knife before folders and ammo and a flintlock if u want to go back that far. Man up men
@DanAddison
@DanAddison 3 месяца назад
Or possibly men that feel the need to carry around a ton of apparatus so that they’re prepared for any scenario are the real wimps because they feel a nagging insecurity and powerlessness without an arsenal of hardware backing them up even though 99% of people happily walk around with zero tools and get by just fine? Just playing devils advocate here, since you’re keen to find fault with other people’s masculinity.

The "fish scaler" tip is for dehooking fish. You push the hook that is caught in the fish mouth so you can unhook it.

Great Vid! I've got two Swiss Champs and they're outstanding! The Pkg carrier is also excellent for grabbing a greasy bike chain which has come off the sprockets, as well a helping to untie knots of paracord or thicker cords. The fish scaler is also very handy as an envelope opener (so the main blades do not get dulled). The magnifier is perfectly positioned so that when the opposing scale side of the knife is laid flat against a finger, hand, arm, foot, etc., any splinter, thorn, shard, etc., is perfectly in focus. It also does work great on a sunny day to start a fire. Also, when using the onboard pen, it can be inserted under the pkg carrier when opened slightly and then closed. This allows the body of the knife to be a comfortable handle for the pen. YMMV.
@OutsideTheTargetDemographic
Can use magnifying lens with your cellphone camera to get crazy close shots of things.

You missed the electrical connector crimper on the back of the pliers. Have carried the Swiss Champ in a leather pouch on my belt for years, never had a problem. It's always handy and does not get in the way. Used to work assembling Class A trucks. I was always getting metal splinter in my hands. The tweezers were a life saver.

This seems like the perfect sling bag or car knife. If you are wearing pants and a belt then maybe pocket carry but tossing it in my gym shorts to head to the grocery store? Probably not

Agreed - the spine tools are bonuses, additions, "might as wells". I've used each at some point, but rarely out of necessity.

@christophegerard6012

Yes, it is a flat head screwdriver. I EDC a swiss champ too and it's the tool I use the least. I used the cheasel more lol. I don't like the central cheasel idea at all. The awl I have used more often, putting a new hole on my belt (it's very efficient for this), the corkscrew for untying knots. I use the hook and the can opener to hold my phone on landscape mode. I use the scissors, tweezers, small blade and bottle opener the most. The pin is very useful. I sometimes used the fish scaler to measure things. I just now sharpened my small blade, I only use the big blade for food when I'm not home. I use the toothpick to remove stuff from my phone's holes. Honestly it is serving me very well. People say the pliers are useless, but they are better than not having pliers and they are precision pliers. If you don't use the tooth pick much, you can replace it by a fireants. They are on the victorinox store and fit in the tooth pick hole, it's a small but usable ferro rod. I use the magnifying glass sometimes, when there is small print. I have been carrying everyday for ~3 years, I don't have any bad thing to say about it, except for the back screwdriver and cheasel. The Philips screwdriver is great, just difficult to remove. The saw is absolutely amazing. I've seen a video where they compare it to leathermen, victorinox's saw is much, much better.

BTW the thing at the end of the fish scaler is to remove the hook out of the fish's mouth.

Ruler can be used to dunk Oreos without getting your fingers wet! (see my Short on the matter) Lol. I used a Sharpie and filled in all the indexes, and then wiped it off. Made the readings easier to....read. Great for poking, long-shaft flat screwdriver, the forks at the end as a....fork.

My preferred carry method is to hang the swiss champ in my pocket, clipped to my belt or belt loop. My tether plus carabineer is like 7". Barely notice it's there.
@CurlysCurated
@CurlysCurated Год назад
I can def see how that works. I think all the full sized SAKs sit great in the pocket upright. It's when they lay flat that they start feeling like a lump.
@jeepnicc

That's how I carry as well. Victorinox belt-clip with a short chain and and small key-clip. The knife hangs perfectly upright in the back of my pocket exactly where a modern folder with a pocket-clip would ride.

Just to explain that the rods are retinal cells. They aren’t stiffening and are absolutely not the cause of your presbyopia. The ciliary muscles are weakening and your crystalline lens is stiffening but the rods have nothing at all to do with it. Rod cells are in your peripheral retina and are most useful in low light and are generally responsible for scotopic (black and white) vision.

I would say that the Swiss Champ has the best "bang for the buck" of the Swiss Army knife series (size, features, cost). It is not "cheap" but still affordable. Victorinox does make a couple of other knives that are close to comparable, so a bit of "research" is always in order but buy the best you can afford. Some show more of a Wenger heritage (particularly in the considerably beefier spring set-up for the scissors and pliers). There are larger (and how!) Swiss Army knives but they are really too big and heavy to be practical AND the price skyrockets (great if you are a collector though... and there exists a true behemoth under the Wenger banner that has to be seen to be believed!). The lesser models may fit your needs but many may lack features you want. Better to have a feature that you might not often use (or at all) rather than lack something critically necessary...like the cork-screw (!!!). This may be apocryphal but I heard that the little screwdriver that fits in the corkscrew was originally intended for adjusting rifle scopes. Seems a bit too tiny, easily droppable and losable for that though. It does, however, do a sterling job in tightening those damnable hinge screws in ones eyeglasses! One thing though. Since these knives are "modular" and generally assembled from a standard kit of parts, Victorinox SHOULD be able to build custom knives (at a premium price, of course). Custom knife pouches would be a problem though. My original Swiss Champ is over 30 years old now, A few years ago I had it refurbished by Victorinox and it looked as good as new. These are knives, primarily, with additional features. If you lean towards the "multitool" idea (folding pliers with additional features), then both Victorinox and Leatherman produce some fine equipment.
@JohnDoe-el5ir
@JohnDoe-el5ir 11 месяцев назад
In my opinion any pouch spoils the idea of pocket knife with many functions aka SAK. That’s why Swisschamp is one fat layer and fish scaler too thick and has redundant tools. So I carry Handyman in which you can use can opener as Philips driver and when you put in cork screw the small eye glasses screwdriver then it’s big improvement. Now I even don’t regret much the lack of T Philips screwdriver like in Tinker series. If only that can opener was a little sturdier for strong screws. BTW fish scaler can be substituted by back of the main blade. 😊

I don’t think any of those are “loser” tools as you call them. It’s a matter of having the correct hand and finger dexterity in using them. Granted yeah if you want to chisel away at something for two hours then you use a normal length, stand alone chisel. But that can be said on any tool that is in the Swiss champ. Point being is that these tools all serve a function and do work but for quick operations.

WAY TOO BIG. No thanks. I have a Climber as my EDC. To be it's all about the weight. Anything bigger than a three layer in Victorinox just seems like too much to carry in my pocket. And if I want something to throw in a pouch, then I would rather have something more like a Leatherman.

The Swiss Champ is a fine tool but it's a brick, better suited to a desk drawer than an on person carry. I generally carry an Explorer and a Leatherman Sidekick. Is it more weight than a Champ? Yes. But that weight is distributed between 2 pockets, not one. I decided a long time ago that that trying to find ONE tool that does everything you want is fruitless.
