Do I Really Need Running Socks?

I'm usually not that particular about my running socks. My feet aren't the toughest of feet, but things like sweat, blisters, or just being wet generally don't particular bother me or become issues. But, over time, I've started to realize that there are a couple of things that I look for in a running sock. And I think that, yes, you do need a running specific sock. Maybe not for every day, but it's good to start with one or two and then decide from there.
Disclosures: some of these socks were sent to me for review purposes. others were purchased by myself. I have tried my best to specify which is which within the video. But in all cases, no money has been exchanged and no one will have any preview of my thoughts before the video goes live on youtube.
And in case you'd like to check out any of the socks, some links:

I thought sock videos were silly. But I'm here bc I've got a nasty blood blister on my second toe. Thanks to everyone in the comment section - just ordered my first pair of Injinjis. Hopefully they help! I'd like to find a cheaper alternative sock for shorter runs, but I'll use these on longer runs (and until this blister goes away 🤞)

As a soccer player, the only socks that produced a positive, significant change were TruSox. They absolutely lock your foot into your boots so that all motion is transferred directly from foot to boot to ball. I tried TruSox as running socks and got horrible blisters. I do really like Balega socks though for running. They are super soft, do not absorb moisture, padded where they need to be, mainly around the achilles, and thinner elsewhere to reduce bulk.

In my experience, once you try on a pair of athletic/running socks, it's hard to go back. I used to get blisters a lot due but that's no longer any issue. I really like nike elite lightweight, but they don't last very long. Big toe had a hole within 3 months. I use compression socks too, a random brand on Amazon called Eulay. My legs cramp up sometimes post-run, and they really help prevent that I think, not entirely sure haha.
@kofuzi

a couple people have been asking about cramping and compression. it's something i'll have to look into deeper
@aristodiga82
@aristodiga82 5 лет назад
this is not a question for me. My feet develop blisters easily so socks is a must for me. Cotton ones are ok for 10K or 1 hour runs, but above that they cause blisters, so I go with running socks that are not cotton based. On brands, I'm not too picky. As long as they're not cotton they usually works fine for me. So I'm not buying those nikes, adidas, new balance etc socks, cause they're expensive. I wear kalenji socks from decathlon. They have a wide variety of running socks, all works well. But my favourite kalenji socks are the 'kalenji strap' series, because they provide compression in the arches and ankles, but comfortable in the forefoot and toes areas, and different left-right. Highly recommended although they are quite thick. Kalenji have thinner ones also, which are comfortable, and compression socks up to calf height.

Haven't tried high end brand socks other than Ininji which I love but I find it hard to pay $15 and up for a pair of socks. Which is why I was very happy when I stumbled upon Adidas Compression socks. They're not as nice as the Ininji's but come close and better yet, a pack of 4 can be found for about the price of a pair of Ininjis.

By pure chance (chance meaning I had no clean socks this morning), I went for it without them on my Pegasus 35. I did notice better ventilation from the shoe that I found to be a little warm (I live in Panama, Panama, meaning a cool morning is 86-90 F) so I did enjoy the extra cooling but I could feel the friction on my insoles. This is the first time in 3 years of daily running that i go with no socks, and you just posted this about socks, conspiracy? By the way I use the cheapest compression socks from a Japanese brand called Miniso (I think Chinese posing for Japanese-Korean brand), 2 dollars a pair do the trick

haha the real question truly is... how does one film b-roll for socks!? funny :) -- had a quick question btw - any chance you could talk to us about why compression wraps for calves are useful? or why compression for even arms, like the way kipchoge wears them, are useful as well?
@kofuzi
@kofuzi 5 лет назад
Therapeutically (and keep in mind I'm no healthcare professional), compression promotes good circulation. It's used to prevent deep vein thrombosis and was previously used by people with cardiac issues or by diabetics and sometimes by pregnant women if they had to fly long distances. Compression while exercising, as I understand it, should help the muscles flush out waste products. But for me, it mainly just keeps me warm. I did pick up a pair of arm sleeves last year. It's good for skin coverage but mine aren't that compressive, so I don't think they do much other than that. Some people think thin compression gear can help with the evaporative processes related to sweating. Maybe we need a video.

Glad you brought up this topic. Many runners/running RU-vidrs poo-poo the topic, but socks are pretty important! Maybe not so related to performance per se, other than avoiding potential issues with their moisture-wicking / blister-avoiding / no slip / highly durable technologies - but their overall profile is 100% as important to "fit" as the shoe. Some shoes only fit well with thicker socks, or thinner socks. So it's the combination that really determines fit.

Merino is the way to go. Recommend Feetures Elite Merino or Smartwool. Icebreaker has great lifestyle socks, but don’t love them for running.

Balega enduro. Best fitting socks ever. Whoever disagree is wrong. Whoever agrees is a very nice person

I’m still trying to find a sock for this summer. I wore hilly twin skin in the cold months and for my marathon but with a marathon coming up in August I need something thinner I feel, yet still supportive. I’m trialing hilly mono skin and stance currently. I’ll check out Sockmine also

any advice on socks that dont slip? my feet kinda slip to the front of the shoe and give me black toes.

I really like Goldtoe Powersox, they're nicely cushioned and a little compressive through my arch. I've got some Puma socks that are similar that I like too that I got at Costco on the cheap.

What do you guys think of compression socks do you think they work?
@PaulCooijmans

I prefer to leave out socks, because the less weight you have on your feet, the faster you are. Only below about 8 degrees Celsius, socks are needed.

Used to never wear socks when I ran when I ran solely in vibrams but now that I'm running in more traditional shoes I just run in anything synthetic

I have tried just about every running sock out there. Wrightsocks is absolutely the best of the best, but I guess it depends on which model/cut you get. I prefer the medium thickness over the thinner ones, and I live in CA. The dual layer is just special compared to all other brands. I won't run over 10+ miles unless I'm on these socks. If its less miles than that, then I guess it doesnt matter what sock you use. If you wanted to go cheap, you could always go the Uniqlo route. Highly affordable and tons of styles, and versatile in terms of when you can wear them. Roadrunnersports drymax brand is also another great choice, but unlike uniqlo, not that great to wear casually if needed since theyre actually made for active sports.

I have been using for years low cut socks from Nike and starting using Asics and Adidas long running socks since a while ago. I like running shoes to be true to size fit and so I have to use those very thin socks.
