One thing worth bearing in mind, and please don't take this the wrong way, is that, in my opinion, rather than spending what was probably £5k on a wrap, money on a carbon intake, it may have been more prudent to put that money aside for repair bills to actually keep it running...?

Had it for over 4 yrs and done 42K miles and absolutely love it, but the costs of ownership far exceeded what I had predicted. I've always had an itch for an e9X m3 and feel it'll be along the same running costs. Mine will be up for sale in a coupe of months as a more practical daily is needed. Hi, warm hello from France. I generally only speak about what I know despite of usual legends (road bearings, Throttle actuators...) I bought a 2013 e 93 M3 on jan 2020, after 4 years of ownership and 20 000 kms I ownly have 2 thing I can complain about2 things: 1) fuel consumption : 30€ will last you only 100 kilometers. 2) I wld like to have the roof down old the time to ear non stop the induction noise of that F1 derived beast out of Landshut. Unfortunatelly I live in north of France. This is a future collectible... last coupe m3 last N/A m3, only V8 M3, only coupe convertible M3. That car is a Unicorn it will stay in history.

One of the best looking mid sized coupes ever made, absolutely love it. The engine issues, and the general lack of low end torque, just spoil things a bit as an only car, but as a second car for sure would love one 🙂 My mates daughter dated a lad who was lucky enough to own one, in his 20's, and his engine ate itself and left him a 12 grand repair bill. It was repaired and seems fine now, but this issue does seem to be a case of 'when' it happens, and not 'if' it happens. He paid £14 grand for it, and knew it would need money spending, a bit like you did, but he has spent well over £15 grand getting it 'right'. Is it now worth £30 grand ? I don't think so. I paid £28.749 for a mint, 1 owner from new, 25,800 mile OG M2 which is almost 10 years 'newer' than his E92 M3.
@ben2155

I paid around 30k for my E90 a few years ago, probably still worth similar now as still yet to hit 20k miles and I have only spend money on consumables like tyres. The key here is not to buy a POS that needs everything replacing.

Engine destruction is not inevitable if the rod bearings are replaced (on top of routine maintenance and not thrashing it when cold of course). Sorry to hear of your son's engine destroying itself 🙁. Out of interest, did he report the case to any M3 forums? Bought mine with 76k on the clock, only used as a weekend car and a couple of track days each year, now on 81k. I replaced the rod bearings (I'm a mechanic, so of course saving labour costs), TAs, clutch & f/wheel and front tyres were changed by previous owner. I replaced the rear tyres, 2 rear susp links, rear pads (I cooked them at Snetterton!) and front pads and discs last year (all pads are DS 2500s now). Bought car for 14.7k Nov 2019 when prices (by chance) were much lower! Not spent anywhere near £15k!😱

@@Assimilator1 I worked in the motor trade for many years, in parts departments, so I can appreciate the costs, and what can be saved if you do have the tools and knowledge to work on a car yourself. I'm not sure if he is on any forums, it's not my 'son' you see, it's a lad my mate's daughter was dating, but we chatted often as I had a tuned M140i at the time so we had a lot in common. Yours sounds like a well cared for example, and if you have the tools and knowledge to do the work, yes they are a great investment. Sadly I see lots for sale with 50-60 thousand miles on, and no bearing replacement done yet, which (if you are not a mechanic and have to pay a garage) is now a £3500-£4000 job. Still a lot cheaper than a full rebuild if it eats itself of course !! @ben2155 You paid £30k for yours, very good, but if it only has 20k miles on it now, it must have been a very low mileage example when you bought it, and hence why it cost 30 grand. Unless you keep it in a garage forever though, the mileage will rise, and eventually you will have to do the shells, and unless you're a mechanic like the other gent I replied to, that's a big bill.

The car is reliable if you drive responsibly. People often complain about rod bearings, but the real issue is using low-quality oil. M cars should always run on 10w60 oil, regardless of the season, for better lubrication because they are designed for high RPMs. Using thinner oil won't work well; it becomes too watery and fails to provide proper lubrication, which wears out the rod bearings. I know people who haven't needed to change their rod bearings for years, and even after replacing them for maintenance or due to high mileage, the bearings were still in decent condition. Another important factor is not to exceed 2,000 RPM until the oil indicator shows that the oil is warm. Until then, the oil is too thick to lubricate properly. Once the oil is warm, you can drive the engine hard, and it will hold up well. In conclusion, always use 10w60 oil and avoid high RPMs until the oil is adequately warmed up.

Bought mine 4 years ago, LE 500 E92. Reliability wise only had to replace the actuators. Maintenance wise 2 rear ps4s's and rear discs then servicing. I've done around 15 000 miles and all in it will have cost £15 000. That's including £700 road tax per year, insurance, tracker subscription and fuel which at 19 mpg is around 35p per mile at current prices. There's not much else that gives the amount of smiles per gallon like one of these though especially something that's rear wheel drive. GT 911s maybe but can't buy one of these for the cost of an E92.

I did n/a and gapped. 335d hybrid turbos and it could not pull from my m3. Especially high speed - it wasn’t build for straight line speed. It’s a precision tool.

Love my E92 M3! Its my only car and I sometimes wonder about selling it and getting something more efficient and practical, however when i drive it i always enjoy it. So that leads me to believe to keep it and do the mods I want and to get another fun daily car.

I had to do my starter motor as well when mine went in my E92 M3. Still was an amazing car.
@rossfripp4503
@rossfripp4503 7 месяцев назад
How much did it cost (parts and labour)? There is a "hack" where you can buy a new one, take the innards out of the old one and put the new gubbins into the old housing, which means you don't need to remove the starter, which I gather is a mammoth task. I'd appreciate it if you could reply to let me know 🙏🙏
@Nike427

@@rossfripp4503 £600 - £700 back in 2019? That was for new starter motor and the labour time to do it due it being located right in the centre of the engine unfortunately. I had to jump start my car for a while until it was done.

240i is not even in the same league. This is an m car not an m lite. If you want to drive a car you need an m3. If you want a soft road car that’s cheap to go fast but handles like a boat then you have the right car!

What you are failing to understand/mention is that, all the stuff that has gone wrong during your ownership is what naturally happens at that age and mileage. You have effectively future proofed it now. It will be reliable for the next 60k for you or the next owner if you are silly enough to sell now.
