Great project. Even though you use straw for the floor, an added feature more so than the insulated walls is insulating the floor as well as the lid. I once took great pains to build a dog house for our best friend and he would lay on the ground to keep warm even with straw inside raised off the ground. Dog vs. cat but the principles of heat are the same. Heat rises and insulation in the lid will help trap some of the warmth. Though anything for sure is better than nothing, just the placement of the insulation already being used would be better served top and bottom.

Very nicely 😊 done. I as well have to make something like what you built for my outside cats. Thanks for sharing this.

Great Job! Guess I missed the Jane Book comment! For me I can't stand to see ANY animal cold, hot, hurt, hungry, injured, etc. I would try to help any of them, wild or domesticated, feral... My goal is TNR not to keep the cycle of litters of unwanted kittens going. I use old coolers and also plastic containers like the Rubbermaid kind or Sterilite (SP?) filled with straw. Also have used Omaha steak type coolers in a protected area like a porch too. Thanks for the video. LOVE IT

Cut your cost by leaving out the paint and cover it with the roofing tar top sides and underneath. You will add life to your shelters. You may be able to cover three shelters that size.

Thank you for posting the dimensions...I was about to ask what modifications were made to the dimensions, but at the end of the video I heard you say that they were below the video...perfect! I'll probably go with this version because it adds insulation. I was looking at the Fiver Cats guide, but they did not have an insulation layer.

+Patrick Staley Your welcome! Mine is now over a year old and absolutely no issues. It has held up perfectly through rain and heat and cold. And the cats use it! In addition to the wall insulation I fill it with wheat straw and the cats love it. When I open it there is often little round cat imprints in the straw!

There is a spray in a can that waterproofs just about anything at Lowes or Home Depot that makes anything waterproof. Cannot remember the name of it. I think it is about $12?

Super nice video. Could you please tell me the size of the two door openings? I need to build a shelter for a stray before the weather turns cold here in NJ and it would be very helpful. Thanks, Phil

@@peepingmig Thanks for the info. I didn't realize you mentioned the door size up front in the video. I heard it when I re-watched it, but thanks for the follow up. I am building one using this design, only making slightly smaller as I have only one cat to build for, which is a stray, not feral, it is very used to people and likely got abandon or lost. I'd adopt the cat, but my rescue dog is very hyper and aggressive to people he doesn't know and cats (and other dogs too). I really hope the house will keep the stray (female) warm in the NJ winter. Any advice surely welcome. Thanks. Phil

@@uptownphotography Be sure to use straw, and not hay. Straw repels moisture, hay soaks it up. Your cat will be quite cozy in there! You could always cover the shelter with a blanket for added warmth. Also, if you can, face the doorways towards a wall to cut down on direct winds blowing into the shelter.

@@peepingmig Thank. Yes i know about the straw vs hay. I have the house outer walls almost done. The one issue I am running into is how do you waterproof the plywood roof. I don't want it to de-laminate over time. I am trying to avoid using asphalt shingles as they make the structure very heavy. I would rather use another method if i discover something user friendly... Thanks.........Phil

I need a house big enough to house up to 27 cats

Rose 13 Bud 13 Sounds like you need a shed! Usually, with that many cats, people will build multiple smaller shelters and cluster them together. I have seen sheds converted into "apartments" for cats. Or did you mean an actual house? I know someone who turned their sunroom into quite the cat house!
