Do my tips to TOW A TRAILED SAFER work? 

I got some more for you D&E in The Garage. Let's start by saying that a lot of people don't do any maintenance on their trailer. Depending on how much you use your trailer, and what you haul in it, it's just like a car. You need to check your air pressure on a regular basis, and for dry rot cracking on the tires. Also, repacking the wheel bearings, will keep them from wearing out or running hot, and replacing the grease seal. Doesn't take long to do, the seals are not expensive, and a tub of grease. And another thing is to not over tighten down on the axle bearing, which most people that don't know do! The common practice is to tighten down until snug, then back off just a slight bit to line up the cotter pin hole. And yes, you do need to replace a new cotter pin also, don't be cheap. Lights can always be fixed, but having a tire come off the trailer while going down the road, will get you in a whole lot of shit that can be avoided if you are smart and stay on top of maintenance. Don't know how, or don't have the time to do it, take it to any local mechanic shop and they will be glad to do it for you. Don't wait until something is wrong! I always said, a small repair will keep it from going into a major repair. I'm a retired old school mechanic and I still tell my kids, that are not kids anymore, did you check your fluids, and when did you change your oil last if I didn't do it. I'm 70 and still work on cars, and ride my motorcycle, hopefully I just gave some advice and help out there. REMEMBER CHECK YOUR FLUID LEVELS ONCE A WEEK!!! Be careful, and stay safe.

Yep those are some pretty good tips there I'll tell you what bud the first big trip I took with my 28 ft Keystone camper we were going down the road and the trailer came off the ball when we were on the freeway doing 70 we got pulled over calmly and I realized that the pin we put in the hitch lock broke off

Big tip, cross your safety chains. I'd your tongue pops off it will act as a cradle instead of it hitting and digging in to the road. I see people either not v Cross them or cross them without even knowing why.

Yep I was taught all of that. About 4 years ago after we bought our camper trailer 28 ft Keystone Ultra Lite my wife came to where I work swap vehicles with me and went to pick up the camper about an hour after talk to my job to pick up my truck she called me to let me know there was an incident while she was on the freeway so I left work got to where she was stuck on the side of the road on the freeway and figured it out she had the wrong size ball in the hitch it's a good thing when the trailer come apart from the truck it didn't Smash Into my truck or anyone else's vehicle around her she no longer goes to get the trailer by herself

For the lights i like getting a oval bracket with the pop in lights when the original breaks. Break one of those you can replace the single housing at any truck stop instead of having to do the whole kit

My advice is . . . don't touch your wheels with your hand. I have come darn close to burning my hand that way. For $30 to $40 you can get a non-contact infrared thermometer. They sell them at any big box home improvement stores . . . and at Harbor Freight Tools.

While your digits are feeling the hub, feel the tire for temperature too, overheating will show up fast with under inflation or over loading. Surface mount LED's work too Before backing into the water, unplug your trailer lights.

Check your tire pressure and lug nut torque frequently. And get an IR thermometer for tirre and wheel bearing temperature checks, $30 well spent and you can use it many places...

i just drove across parking area with boat trailer and i put chains on but did not latch coupler it popped off ball going over a bump and smashed into back of car still have same dented license plate three vehicles later LOL. also was trying to get off exit so i was behind a homemade trailer of junk in right lane about a hundred yards back and suddenly one wheel locked up on trailer must have seized and axle ripped off trailer came tumbling down road end over end right at me it was at 45 degree angle and hit roof of station wagon left a tire skid mark right over my head just missed going through window. the fun part was the giant spark show 20 feet of sparks from trailer and it is whipping back and forth amazing it did not come off of car

The light tip was good.

Gonna start using the back of the hand trick for bearing health. Not only that, but I imagine it would be good for checking if you have an electric brake hanging up a little as well

Tip for wheel bearing use a temp gun carry one with me all the time

My biggest f up is always leaving the tongue jack down. I dont always do it, but ive done it 3 or 4 times for suere 😂. Nice shirt, 🐻⬇️ lots to look forward to.

I just hate guys who back into the sidewalk with the ball sticking out so noone can walk without a trip😮 to the hospital.

Watch your tire condition and dates….. nothing worse then a blow out, and the wag the dog that follows…. True story I ended up on a truck with the shinny side down because a trailer decided it wanted to lead rather than follow….

If you get to that stop a half mile down the road and find something you forgot to hook up, call someone more intelligent than you, and never tow a trailer again. The time to double check things is BEFORE you hit the road, not after. The proper time and place to check wheel bearings and tires is also BEFORE you hit the road. You say you got this advice from old timers. Well, I'm an old timer, and here to tell you the old timers who gave you that advice, are idiots. If you are not 100% confident in your load BEFORE you leave, you have no business on any public road.
