That is a proper katana then. You never force the blade into the saya and you use your thumb to relieve it from its saya. Forcing the blade will cause you to damage not only the saya but also the housing that creates that seal.
Real handmade katanas from japan dont slide out. If its slides out its poorly made sheath/fit. It should require some force to pull out. Youre supposed use one to hand pull the blade and thumb on the other hand to push the tsuba. If your blade slides out. Itll be terrible for horseback riding. Your blade just falling out or flying in and out of the sheath like crazy. 200 dollar katanas are just for display. Actual blades costs thousands.
Also, the first years, as you sheath, make sure the blade is up and not facing the groove of your thumb. It only needs to happen once guys. I bare touched my desk with that thing and it left a deep cut. A little bit deeper than I thought it would.
Just make sure your thumb is to the left or right of the center of the stubs because if it does still end up falling out or your friend try’s to pull it out your thumb will get cut open
Properly made katana should have a retention, caled "seal". There are even different techniques of breaking a seal. If your katanas slide out so easily, than they are not properly made
Exactly, you can use the thumb to push on the tsuba to pop the seal. Not to just prevent it from sliding out. As you said, a properly fitted sword will never “fall out”
Thank you, this was the reply I was looking for. So many people here are just consuming this nonsense, any authentic katana will have this feature. Saying the sword will just, "slip out" is pure madness, the thumb on the tsuba is also essential for drawing the sword in a swift motion
If you want form fitting, then you'll have to pay more for a custom. you're paying for mass-produced the shelf parts. Was thinking of wrapping the cling film around the blade and spray mould release, then pour silicone into the saya. Slip the blade in and let it set. But I don't know how the silicone would react with the carbon steel.
@@stevenstocker9873 Even cheap mass-produced katanas have a seal unless they are utter garbage. I have a $30 one that was the first in my collection, and it will not just fall out of the sheath unless it was not put back in properly in the first place. You could hold it upside-down and shake it and it wouldn't fall out. And again, only $30!
It isn’t sharpened at all, it is completely dull, but I literally bought one 2 days ago at Comic Con. Thank you for uploading this video. This will definitely help myself stay safe.
Oh and remember: If a knife falls, back away as fast as you can, don't turn, don't run, and let it fall. The hospital bill and the damage you'll get from not being able to land a job is higher than the price it'll take to get a new custom made katana.
Anime has been preparing me for this my whole life 👁️👄👁️ Edit: Well getting all of these likes was unexpected indeed. Also for the people in the comments it's a joke lol 😭
A proper katana shouldn't be able to fall out like that, it should only come out if it is popped out of the sheath by (usually) pushing it with your thumb, otherwise there shouldn't be a need to worry.
@@Redskeletongreeneyes2 Is there any specific sellers that offer actual quality Katanas? I'm interested because one day I may purchase one and I wouldn't wanna waste alot of money on a cheaply made one
This is ALSO the worst feeling if your katana has been used so many times & the sheathe is loose. That being said, it’s always best to hold it at your side with the butt of the sword facing forward. If you have a belt holding your sword so you can keep it on you hands-free, this works fine.
A proper Katana isn’t suppose to slip out of it’s sheathe. It’s locked in there, and your suppose to hold the blade facing upwards for drawing the sword easier.
Here's another tip: don't buy a real katana unless you have a license for it and know how to probably use it, there is plenty of high quality duplicates that look like the real deal
Another tip: I'm 99% sure you don't need a license for a katana in America. And his katana was made wrong in this video, you can tell front lack of a habaki.
@@heidro1005 here, you need a license to own a blade that's 30cm or longer, not every country is like your country, so I will be taking your tip and give it back to you
My brother once told me One day there was a school camp, and my brother was a teacher at that school. My brother told the students to bring a small knife just in case in the forest. And there's one student, instead of carrying a knife, he brings a katana when camping. Then my brother confiscated the katana Like wtf, knife and katana are very different 😭
I guarentee you no one is losing thier fingers from holding the blade. A serious injury is what would happen. Unless your some super human with a godlike grip that holds tight to whatever comes in your hand. And 2nd no one is stupid to hold the blade thats falling thats like trying to catch a falling knife, you know its dangerous so you just let it hit the ground
I learned with a bokken. About 25 years later, I bought a katana. Don't be stupid guys, don't play with dangerous things you don't know how to use properly.
@@srimpingkid3490 really? His disciples would argue that even the Romen empire and the Jews was argue that. But hey a person who is likely atheist, hasn't read the Romen articles, the Jewish articles or the early Gospels knows more then the record keepers. Seems to be a theme lately, like saying the catholic scientist Edward Darwin was atheist and used this theory to disprove God.
