Here is a word of warning. ALWAYS wear a mask when routing, sanding, or anything with wood. I did woodworking as a hobby throughout the years and now I have pulmonary fibrosis. My lungs are dying quicker than the rest of me. I have seen this before when I worked at a nuring home. It is a miserable slow death..

Working at a pulp factory i got instructions pine and other soft woods the body removes quickly when inhaled. Birch grown at sea the same but birch grown on high mountains cannot be completely removed. Hard oak etc. is in the same league as breathing asbestos and worse than stone/most metals as it gets stuck in the lungs for the remainder of your life. The government health/environment guy sighed and was sad for hardwood table restorers.

Nicely done with the 3/4" sign. I didn't even consider that a 40W diode could cut through that much material. One trick I've used in the past for placing things like the "EST 2018" is to engrave it into the surface of the target (the 3/4" sign in this case) and the engraving creates a small recess that the pieces just slot into so you won't need the laser and quick square.

Great video guys. I just went to check this laser on their website. They show "adjustable light beam" with the click of a button. It's like 2 modules in one?. 40w and 22w. If you went over this feature I think I missed it. I know nothing about these lasers . So I've been doing my research and came across the brand. Thank you guys for the tips.

Thanks so much!! The adjustable laser switches from “precise” mode to “normal” mode, but doesn’t change from 22W to 40W. The precise mode is more for fine detail engraving (intricate designs, photos, etc) and normal mode can be used for pretty much everything (cutting, engraving, etc). I hope that helps! 😊

When making parts in Acrylic, you can use the edge of the acrylic piece you cut out to aid in taking the tape off the acrylic. It won't scratch the acrylic doing it in this fashion.

I have a 100w co2 laser and it will cut 3/4 in one pass also, but it has charring as well. I think anything over 1/4 will have at least some char. Its definitely faster than my cnc machine though. But the cnc can carve v grooves without char. Every tool has its limits, pros and cons. The 3d printer is cool but the slowest of all of them. The cnc can do some metal. The laser can engrave and cut pretty quickly.

You have me sold on the laser engraver. Would like to see if it could cut cedar fence pickets to make seasonal door plaque's for my front door. One thing I learned from a friend is don't cut pressure treated wood or vinyl with a laser. Salesman told him he could easily cut vinyl with a laser. The toxic and corrosive fumes destroyed his $6,000 CO2 laser in just 6 months! Thankfully it was in an enclosure vented to the outside!

Haven’t finished the video yet, but I saw something when you were setting the height of the laser using their included guide. The minute you pulled it out, the wood flexed up. That’s a good thing to consider for any and everyone. Once that happens, it’s just all kinds of wonky. You’ll get perfect results in one place and odd results elsewhere. Wood can play a factor. If it isn’t flat, it’s not gonna be good for your project.
@PacificPinesRanch

Yes definitely! We struggle with humidity because it warps the thinner pieces of wood.

SOO, my kids say I ruin everything! Maybe that's true! Hahaha 😂 But seriously, please be careful with that laser and especially what you cut. You two are awesome, and I absolutely love your willingness to try anything and just do it! It's inspiring and fun to watch! But so many of these things come with serious health risks, and the Chinese manufacturers (like Creality) don't inform their customers (barely at all) of the dangers. Some materials (including most treated woods, and most purchased wood is treated) give off some seriously dangerous particulates when vaporized by a lazer, like formaldehyde gas (just google the affects, yikes! Scary AF). That's also why industrial CO2 or fiber lasers almost always come with an enclosure paired with a carbon filter to catch or evacuate the nasty "melt your lungs 🫁 forever" stuff... (Think Gloforge for hobbyists, and the huge price difference.) Many seemingly innocuous materials, even paper or leathers, will surprise you when you read up on it. I was just lucky and learned young because my father was first a welder, then a nondestructive tester (x-rays and ultrasounds on the Apollo missions and more). He was also a certified AWS welding inspector and trainer (trained inspectors), with woodworking as his "side hobby"... So exposure to the full gambit of DIY projects, with his his constant nagging "Son, always wear your PPE" warnings, and then years of my own related work experience, I've learned just how dangerous this stuff really IS. I also worked on an industrial laser table (cutting stainless for AT&T phone utility boxes) and also a giant plasma table cutting 2" plate. This was in the 90's when CO2 lasers were still rare in industry and cost over a million bucks! At home I have multiple 3D printers with many specialized high temp (toxic) filaments, laser engravers, welders, Oxy/Acet, abrasives, an electrolysis plating setup, etc. My shop also includes countless dangerous acids and oxidizing agents, and a wall of very deadly shop chemicals. Outside of my personal hobby shop I work in IT. But before I shifted to IT, I was originally a biology major in college. Only later on I switched to comp sci. So I've kept up with medicine, along with physics, engineering, and anything and everything science related... This is mostly because I'm deep on the autistic/ADD spectrum, hence always being so long winded with my comments 😂, but it also makes me an insanely voracious learner-doer DIYer. And I genuinely care for others. So back to these lasers... I love them, and they are totally FN awesome! Ohhh! and the endless creative possibilities! It's definitely addictive! But... please just don't risk your eyes 👀 or lungs, because many of the (standard/known) byproducts are odorless or invisible, and WILL definitely cause permanent irreconcilable damage to your eyes, lungs, and health in general. I see you always wear your welding PPE. This is arguably more serious than plasma cutting with no gear. So, at the bare minimum, run a decent fan, even a crappy old box fan, and blow the fumes towards an open door or window. Wear a respirator, or at minimum, a tight well fitted N95. Spend the money on better quality glasses, or at minimum, start it remotely from another room. Remember that you cannot blink faster than light, and those cheap glasses do absolutely -nothing- to protect you from the powerful invisible spectrum generated by those cheap Chinese diode lasers. That secondary invisible beam will almost always point in a totally different direction than the visible laser you're aware of, and they will burn far faster than the UV light generated from arc welding or plasma cutting. So you will think it's "all good in the hood" while you're simultaneously burning your retinas 😢, because the visible laser is pointing 👉 elsewhere. I.E., meanwhile, your standing "naked" directly in the path of a literal blinding laser, totally unaware until your eyes ache painfully afterwards. The damage can be instantaneous and -is- permanent. I know I sound like a totally over-the-top worry willy right now, and I know I also commented on those glasses before... But just make sure you read up on the risks and the cheaper laser glasses, because Creality (and many others) are not required to educate their customers in order to sell this stuff. Most laser glasses have been independently tested, and the terrible results of -most- are shocking (many on par with cheap sunglasses 😎). Even calling them laser glasses at all gives people a dangerous false sense of security. So just be safe so you two can keep doing what you love!! Because your projects and energy are awesome! 👌

FWIW: I'm at the 30W level, and my worst enemy is the fumes! You need really good fume extractor for burning a lot of wood. Before upgrading to 40W, consider spending that money on a quality fume extractor. Also consider that a mixed process might be faster, more efficient and cleaner than solving all problems with the laser. A quality jigsaw is a lot cheaper than any laser, and very fast. No mistake, it IS quite nice to cut through materials with a laser, but there are some things a laser does not do as well as hand tools.

It looks to me like the laser is powerful enough to have nearly melted the RU-vid logo it etched. It must generate quite a lot of heat when it spends that much time in one spot. You can see the distortion in the light on the side of the stainless water bottle. 3/4 inch wood! One pass! That's got some really usable power. I would imagine that would etch PCB's pretty well also. I can't see that having an issue vaporizing thin copper.

Good Morning. I have a question. What do you with the smoke in the room? I seen the door was open. Is there alot of smoke ?
@PacificPinesRanch
@PacificPinesRanch 8 месяцев назад
When cutting wood there is quite a bit of smoke. Creality has a containment system for the laser if you're interested. If you're doing this indoors I would say definitely get a ventilation system in place.

maybe a thinner plastic frosted white backing would make the leds brighter, it might be to thick or it just does not come out on camera all that vibrant.
@PacificPinesRanch
@PacificPinesRanch 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for the tip! A thinner plastic would probably be brighter for sure. It was somewhat bright outside when we were filming, but indoors and in the evening it's pretty bright. :)

how does it perform on 304/316 stainless, 1018/4140 steel, 6al4v titanium and aluminum? How does this compare to the Xtool D1 Pro w/ Infrared module. Can burn wood with a magnifying glass and the sun so the real test is metal. I am not a big fan of creality when it comes to build quality and support.

It was very nice but you should have used sign white acrylic. Sign white acrylic allows the light to pass through so the letter would be much brighter with the color change. This is the same acrylic they use in malls. It is very cheap also.

No fume extraction/exhaust - that's a quick way to get sick real fast. Setting up a fan by an open door or window is not sufficient as I'm sure you already found out. You will still have lots of fumes in your work space - especially if attempting any mass production. Nicely done video though! Tip for removing acrylic masking quicker - use a hair blow dryer on low setting to warm it. Alternatively you can do a quick wipe with mineral spirits, wait a minute or two, then remove the mask in one piece usually.
@PacificPinesRanch
@PacificPinesRanch 9 месяцев назад
I totally agree! I don't know if it shows on the video but the entire side of our house is open so we are basically "outdoors" in a way... This is just a temporary setup. Once we have a more permanent setup we will definitely have to install some kind of ventilation system. Also thank you for the tip! :)
@channelnotfound403
@channelnotfound403 7 месяцев назад
Yea, that's the downside to all these open air designs. But it looks like Creality at least offers an enclosure for these, with a extraction fan and hose.

I tried it a few more times after that and turned the settings down and it came out much better with little to no deformation. I definitely had the settings too high on the one in the video. Still learning! :)

Should these laser cutters be running with no enclosure?
@PacificPinesRanch
@PacificPinesRanch 9 месяцев назад
If they are completely indoors, they need to be ventilated and enclosed. The entire side of our house is open still (building in progress) so we are essentially outdoors, but I would definitely recommend the tent that comes with the product and a ventilation system for the smoke/fumes.
@Vir9il
@Vir9il 9 месяцев назад
@@PacificPinesRanch I meant an optical enclosure. I was more worried about the laser light blinding you. Any laser over 0.5W can blind you in an instant. I'm not sure if this engraver system was sold with an enclosure (i.e. a cover or lid so that you can't see the laser while it's running). A lot of these chinese manufacturers don't care about safety and therefore don't make proper enclosures. Be careful and stay safe!
