I personally think they should have put a solar panel on the roof instead the glass roof that overheats the interior. The solar panel would provide enough power to run computers and avoid losing range whan long term parked.

True and I agree but I pay for PGE to use Solar/wind & never charge it during the day. Only on off hours when they have excess

Due to my age 87, and transmission charges Solar did not pencil out

At the least the solar panel could be used to keep the 12 volt battery charged up likely increasing it's service life. ;-)

Solar panels produce scorching heat too.
@jogalong

That solar panel would produce at most 300w compared to the regular outlet of 3.5kW which would result in months to charge it.

@19:50 you will lose some battery, but you can minimize that by turning off Sentry Mode and Cabin Overheat Protection. I'd expect no more than a percent or two a day with everything shut down.

@23:27 THANKS for bringing up the dearth of service centers. We don't have one in Alabama, either, so I'll have to go to Atlanta (where I picked up Perl (yes, I name my cars)) or Nashville or Jackson (Mississippi of all places!) if I need service and the mobile service can't make it out to me in central Alabama. I've already got a service item, too, (a passenger managed to break the passenger seat recline control off when exiting the car) so I'll have a medium priority test case over the next couple of months.

Tire wear is a function of driving habits. I've had an M3 AWD for 5 years. 71k miles. OEM tires lasted over 50k. Our friends have an M3P. They eat tires every 15k. It's our running joke about how a tesla lets you burn tires or save tires. Jack rabbit starts and hard corners are effortless and so tempting in a tesla. It's all up to the driver to control those urges.

If you grave like your granny you might get ⅔ of a gas car otherwise driving normally it last 10 to 15k miles. Mt oil burner tyers lat 40k miles easy

Just recently bought a Model Y long range…loving it so far. I also own 4 ICE cars and hardly drive them now. ICE cars are not without issues. Finding the right shops to do maintenance and repairs bc the dealerships will rip off your testicles. There are so many in things in an ICE vehicle that could go bad. Teslas are not perfect but is way better a couple of years ago. They can only get better. I hardly pay for anything since I charge at home with Solar. No issues yet…
@slowercuber7767
@slowercuber7767 9 месяцев назад
@10:46 -- If I'm looking to avoid maintenance, I don't buy a second-hand car. Not even a Tesla. How new were the tires when you bought the car? Were they the original tires with the car? (if yes, then wow, 50K miles on the first set of tires? extraordinary!) OOPS i just re-listened your tire story. UGH! 10-15K miles for a new set of tires, don't get me wrong, man, but I hope I don't follow your lead there, I'm hoping to get 30K from the original tires, at least, and will try to get more .... I started using "Chill" mode about 100 miles back with my 2023 MYLR, because I haven't yet developed the ability to restrain myself from accelerating more than necessary when in "Standard" mode and I would really like those expensive tires (yes, the summer tires, at least are quite expensive) to last as long as possible, and when I replace them, it will be with a cheaper, all weather, less performant set of tires. I imagine the batteries and motors will thank me for "chilling down", too.
@slowercuber7767
@slowercuber7767 9 месяцев назад
@15:00 the 2023 model Y has more sound absorptive materials in the cabin and more double paned glass to cut down on outside noise. I've no idea if it would actually do better at recording than what happened here, but I'd expect it to be a little better, at least.

Tesla now has LFP batteries that are SAFER than Lithium Ion batteries. I don't know what size wheels you have on your model. If your wheels are 20" or more, the ride will be harsher. You can probably get tires that will ride smoother than what's on there now. The charging is a problem for longer trips. However, i think using an EV for around town stuff is just fine. In the future, the ranges of EV's will go up and battery tech will improve to the point where it will take much less time to charge. Some cars take just 10 minutes to get from 20 to 80 percent. I own two gas powered cars and have found that the mileage that was advertised never materialized. The EPA estimate is just that..an estimate. Take it with a grain of salt. Sorry to hear you don't like your Tesla. Hopefully in the years to come, they will improve their quality.

@17:49 Idle charges are a necessary evil to get some users to free up the spot when they are done. Best to only charge enough to get you to the next planned charging stop at around 20% (experts like to arrive with single digits of charge, not me!), so you might only have to charge it to 70% to get to the next fast charger two hours later, and that might only take 15 to 25 minutes, so I would set the car to not stop charging until it gets to 80% or maybe even 90% and go get my meal. If I get it quickly, and get back to the car as it hits 70% I'll stop charging and drive on, if my meal takes an extra 20 minutes, it may still not be to 90% when I get back to the car, and certainly it would not have been there long (I believe you have a 5 minute grace period after the charging "completes"). And if I'm now up to 90% instead of 70%, I'll possibly want to update my plans to skip the next charger I would have gone to and go to one further along the route to my destination. Is this sounding a little complicated? It's not, really, but it ain't the same as just driving until you're down to a quarter tank and finding a gas station and filling up in five minutes. It's a different mindset and requires a little planning, for which there are great apps to do most of the work for you.
@slowercuber7767
@slowercuber7767 9 месяцев назад
@16:00 good points about the range being uncertain and less than you'd expect it to be. I will be aiming when travelling to arrive at each charging stop with around 20% charge, partly because it's better for the battery to stay above 10% (maybe above 20%) and partly because below 20% some of the functions don't work (like dog-mode and camp mode and I suspect battery preparation for charging will work only at 20%+, but don't know) Using an app like the Tesla Trip Planner or ABRP (a better route planner) is a must for newbies like me, at least when planning a trip.
@slowercuber7767

@22:07 I recently added a $50 (I paid $40) shade for the roof that mounts under the glass roof and helps the cabin stay a little cooler. It helps a little. When at home I also leave the windows "vented" and the tailgate open on sunny hot summer days, and I use the Tesla app on my phone to close the windows and tailgate from the comfort of my couch if a rainstorm arises. Obviously you don't want to leave the windows down and the tailgate open when parked in a bad location, but even then having a good roof shade (maybe a better insulated one than the one I've got) will really help the cabin stay a little less toasty.

Fuelling up at home takes less than 30 seconds and the car charges while you sleep, the 120V adapter is not meant for regular charging but for use when visiting Granny which is why they are called a Granny charger! My Model Y is simply the best car I have ever driven and also the most economical, my two year average is 250wh/mile, 4 miles /kWh. The result is a car that can go further than I can, on a long journey the 20 minute stop is needed by me so the charging that also takes place is zero inconvenience. I save time every day not needing to visit a gas station. The recipe for a happy EV life is home charging from a proper EV charger, and access to supercharging on a long trip.

I loooove my model Y, I don't have an issue with mileage because I drive in town. I'm a trucker, been so since 2006 so I drive a lot more than the average person, yet I LOVE MY MODEL Y! sure it takes a lot longer to charge and the range isn't that great, 227 at 80% but I only drive 20-30 miles a day! And if I go on road trips, I plan my routes accordingly.

For all wondering, mileage for EVs are measured in watt hours per mile. As opposed to miles per gallon in ICE vehicles.
@peteowens3033
@peteowens3033 8 месяцев назад
At least with smaller EVs it is miles per kWh. My LEAF gets around 4 miles per kWh driving around town with the HVAC running in this southern US heat. That works out to be about 4 cents per mile for the cost of the electricity when I charge it at home.

Thanks for the review. I know that instant torque is fun to play with . . . but unfortunately it is always at the expense of your tires. I bought a 2019 Nissan LEAF SL PLUS a few months ago and I keep it in ECO mode for that reason. Too tempting otherwise. Your review has helped me because recently I have been wondered if I should have bought a Tesla instead. Now I feel like I made the right decision. I am loving my LEAF SL Plus ! I think EVs ROCK (as long as you also have a gas power car for the long trips when you don't want to worry about the hassles of on the road charging. I do, my others are a 2020 Corolla SE and a 2018 SIlverado LT.) Sounds to me like a hybrid vehicle would fit your needs better than a full electric.

Never say never. Look where evs were 10 years ago compared to today, imagine where they will be 10 years from now. BEVs are here to stay. Most negative people are either misinformed, ill informed or glass half empty kind of people. BEVs are not perfect but they are superior to ICE cars right out of the starting gate and are getting better all the time.

I remember my high school physics class. The teacher was summing up the Laws of Thermodynamics and I remember him saying "there is no free lunch, not in this universe". People get an EV thinking "oh boy, no more gas stations". Believe me what you save on gas will just be spent somewhere else on that car. Cars are money pits, ICE, EV, Hybrid, whatever. If you own a car you will pay and pay and pay, one way or the other. I have driven ICE my entire life and I am not interested in an EV. Better an enemy you know.
