So I own both. To say "DO NOT" buy the RF lens, you're missing the main point: focus speed. That is super important when taking photos. That alone is with 2k more.

Most people who do comparisons miss important points. You can get great images with 500$ camera that is not distinguishable from the expensive camera. But the point they miss is the handling and experience. After using some high end cameras and high end lenses I learnt that speed, handling etc make your life different. There is also an issue of low light performance. The images shared of grass are not what people who buy 85 mm buy it for. If we are to compare lenses then at least the images that should be shared should be what the average user use it for.

I 100% agree with your advice to start with the cheap lens and let it earn you the expensive L version. I started off with just the RF 50mm f1.8 and it basically has allowed me to buy all the L lenses I wanted. And honestly the cheap primes have amazing performance too! Clients can never really tell the difference but I love my L series glass cause they really do have that extra special look that I appreciate. Cheers man, great video

I bought the Canon RF 85mm F2 and it sucks as a work lens. I mainly use L lenses, and I can tell the difference right away during a fashion runway shoot. Focus is slow and doesn't provide the correct colors. If you're just shooting in a controlled environment with slow and non-moving objects, then F2 could be good enough. There's a reason why L lenses cost more.

To me, the most hilarious difference is that the non 'L' version has IS....like shouldn't it be the other way around? XD I do think the contrast is a bit better overall in the 'L' lens. I have mostly been disappointed by the color and contrast in non 'L' lenses in the RF mount. I had the 50mm F1.8 for awhile and absolutely hated it. Nothing about the end product looked good to my eyes. It is probably the same with this 85mm F2. They just don't coat them the same and they have far less corrections applied to the lens groups. The RF 'L' lenses also have blue color correction coatings/films in them that basically cancel out CA. I am fairly certain that the F2 has significant CA comparatively. There is nothing wrong with buying one of these if you are just starting and don't have an idea of what you want yet, but for pros and people with more artistic sense, color, contrast, bokeh, f-stop etc will really rankle us if things aren't just so.
@TMVVisualMedia
@TMVVisualMedia 26 дней назад
Fantastic input! I tend to agree with almost all your points. I have to admit that I use the 85mm f2 for my product photography because of the minimum focus distance. It comes in handy. The next L series macro is the 100 L series. But that lens is very niche in my opinion. But it also is only 1000 bucks. Which is the least expensive L series I think.
@FraterABYA
@FraterABYA 26 дней назад
@@TMVVisualMedia I have the 100mm lens, and it is extremely worth the price tag. I think it's portrait potential is a little better actually than the 85 mm because of the very small min focus distance and the 1:1.4 ratio. On a FF camera it's hard to beat!

I sold 85F2 and brought 85F1.2 DS. The DS version has noticeably smoother background. With 1.6x crop, it’s equivalent to 135mm f1.9. However the bright that comes in is less than F2 because of the DS coating. I hate why Canon does not bring the USM and the weather sealing to lower end lenses. Nowadays only L lenses get these. 85F2 could be better with USM and weather sealing.
@TMVVisualMedia

I looked at the DS version as well I thought about it for a little while and I decided to buy the regular version and add a few filters. I think the F2 version is such a great lens for the price. I think it punches above it's weight class. Thanks for the comment and the view!

Of course one image is not worth 2000 dollars (and the difference is much closer to 3000 US$ today, with the 85 1.2 close to 3600 US$) more than the other. But you take these lenses out each month or so (maybe more if you are a professional), and you will make thousands of photos each of those sessions. So over 3000 photo's, will the pretty ones be worth 1 US$ more than the other?

good video, this is why i did not get the canon rf 24 to 70 f2.8, I went with the Sigma art 24 to 70 f 2.8 instead and saved a $1000 dollars. You probably own the rf 24 to 70, test out the sigma version and see what the difference is, I noticed the canon version was a little warmer , but when you can match it in lightroom, not worth the extra $1000
@TMVVisualMedia
@TMVVisualMedia Год назад
Thanks for the comment. I would disagree slightly. Respectfully of course. The Sigma and EF glass is wonderful and is a great bargain. But there is truly something special about native RF glass on an R body. I believe it's because the rear element sits much closer to the sensor. To many, it may not be noticeable. But I prefer native glass.
@Michael_Anthony05
@Michael_Anthony05 Год назад

The point of a 24-70 2.8 is not just sharpness or rendering; but speed, versatility, and accuracy. You buy a 24-70 2.8 in order not to miss a shot. In most professional (and even amateur) use cases, that extra K will pay dividends (especially if you do any kind of work). The RF 24-70 has undefeated AF speed, smoothness, and accuracy. In cases where you have all the time in the world to take the shot (e.g. studio portraits), adapted Sigmas and the RF 85/2 become extremely attractive because their diminished AF speed doesn’t usually prevent you from getting your shot. Nano and Ring USM become luxuries in this case and are probably not worth the extra K if that’s the only difference.

I sold my RF 85 f/1.2L together with my entire Canon system and went with a Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art, I won't say which system it is though. :-P My point is... neither lens was for me, the 85L being way, way too heavy and cumbersome to use most of the time, I don't shoot expensive commercial projects or high-end portraiture / weddings and the 85mm non-L being in adequate for my usage... but if you are someone who is still in the Canon system, try looking at the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM instead. At least that has some weather-sealing compared to the 85mm non-L, is built better and actually has a lens-hood plus IS

EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM is a nice lense. I had it, recently replaced it with the RF L though - here is why: wide open the EF 85mm f/1.4L sadly exhibits some serious longitudinal chromatic aberrations, which also have an impact on overall sharpness. From 2 - 2.8 on, it performed absolutely flawless. As this EF lens is over all a sturdy built workhorse, with snappy, quiet AF, it's in any case a better choice than the non-L RF. But I wouldn't see IS built into a fast quality prime, on a body with IBIS, as an advantage any more (unless it's a long tele) - in contrary: lens IS can sometimes cause slight focus issues when working with such shallow depth of field as a 85mm 1.4 provides.

Currently I run the 15-35L on my B cam. Its great but I think I would like the reach of 105 and then the wide at 24 is plenty. I'm rarely shooting at 15.
