Watch this video to know what NOT to do after an HBOT session! ►► Get certified in HBOT: www.thehbotcourse.com
If you have any travel plans in the middle of your hyperbaric protocol, there are absolutely some things you need to know about when you can or cannot fly in an airplane in and around those sessions in hyperbaric medicine.
This whole conversation about flying after HBOT is all about nitrogen, specifically about the possibility of getting decompression illness (the bends).
So unless you want to risk it and find out how bad the bends can be (and P.S. you can die from it, so I encourage you to take this seriously), watch this video and find out when you can and can’t fly after doing hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

In a previous video you stated it has been around for 300 yrs. Now your saying it from scuba diving. I stated I was Military Trained Pysiological Training Specialist. Altitude Chamber and Decompression Chamber. We trained Air crew members of all aspects of what could go wrong in pressurized cabin , loss of that pressurized aircraft. We also were trained medics, we did Hyperbaric Medical Dives, to treat bends, and gas gangrene patients. I did a dive on a young airmen that hat been in an auto accident. Crushed from the hips down, after 24 dives, and most of his lower extremities amputated, he passed. But the gas gangrene was gone. We breathed pure nitrogen, on 65 ft dives , in a 100% atmosphere inside the chamber. During the blood transfusions , it spurted everywhere, my job at the end, was to clean out 2 inches deep pool of blood in a 24 ft chamber. We had wonderful surgeons on our team. I'm 79 now, and would like to relive my experience. I had over 400 hrs at altitude and over 100 hrs diving.

Sigh, I wrote a pretty researched comment explaining why flying after 2.0 ATA HBOT or less, is not really a problem, and it's gone. I'll rewrite the summary. 2.0 ATA is just 10 meters of diving equivalent. Flying after diving is the same thing as altitude diving at 8000ft (diving 10 meters deep in an altitude lake), I checked the tables for that and basically they said 10 meter dive at 8000ft is more or less equivalent to 17 meters in the dive tables. Then the dive tables said that with 36% O2/nitrox, you could dive over 2H before needing a deco stop (which means you can't go to the surface right away). HBOT chambers are way over 36% O2 unless something is very broken. Then even if things went wrong, it will take you at least 2H from when you get out of the chamber, inside the plane and the plane gets to altitude. that's actually a 2H deco stop that wlil clear whatever little nitrogen you would have. Also another way to look at this, if it weren't safe, and you did a chamber in mexico city, when you get out of the chamber mexico city is 7300ft altitude and on a hot day the density altitude is higher (worse), so you would get DCS the moment you got out ot the chamber. So basically, yes, you can fly after doing a chamber, not something to worry about it, but fun discussion nonetheless. this time I'll save this comment so that I can repost it if it get lost/deleted again

I am flying home to the states from Manila Wednesday took 6 weeks off. Was supposed to have a minimum of 35 Oxygen Therapy Sessions but air pollution caused 3 separate issues of Sinus and Bronchitis. Make matters worse the treatment center will be closed until Tuesday because of the Easter holiday and was hoping to get at 2 “more” treatments in . I only logged in 20 treatments at a cost of $92 a pop. My insurance doesn’t cover Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for PTSD and TBI. Best prices in the world for Oxygen Therapy is in the Philippines, I made a vacation out of it.

Worse case scenario, one leaves a hyperbaric oxygen session (with worst case gases breathed) - what is the symptom they experience if they immediately fly into an airplane, or rocket?
@HBOTUSA
@HBOTUSA 10 месяцев назад
Short answer… if you breath air (21% oxygen 79% nitrogen) under pressure you absorb more of both. The oxygen will get metabolized the nitrogen needs time to off gas. If you fly to soon after diving you can get decompression sickness “the bends”. Nitrogen load and Timing between the two is very important

I hope so, I got rear ended by a truck while stopped at a railroad crossing and suffered hearing loss 38% left ear and 18% right ear, happened in January 2021 most likely too late for completely successful recovery it seems my tinnitus has died down a bit. I was taking Predisone before therapy. The doctor said I could get my hearing restored after a minimum 35 treatments but I have to return to finish. I am hoping to get 2 more in before I leave. If the treatments aren’t successful I think it would help make future new treatments that come to market more easier to recover. A lot of medical treatments in any branch of medicine aren’t 100% successful I think Oxygen Therapy is an excellent supplement. I do feel a lot better.

I don’t think so. Ozone therapy is very different. It is administered through IV or through insufflation. The surrounding pressure is not altered during ozone treatments.

HBOT is like the Wild West just like supplements. I did a 40 min dive at 1.3 ATA in the afternoon. Experienced hyperoxia symptoms and it caused a horrible herxheimer reaction. Person administering had no clue any of this could happen I guess even tho they’d been doing it for 6 years. Still I’m thinking of getting my own HBOT tank to try to heal my brain. Never heard of this rule so thank you vm

I'm sorry to hear you experienced a Herxheimer's reaction. It can happen, even at 1.3 ATA. And it’s unfortunate that many people practicing hyperbaric oxygen therapy still don't know all the things they ought to know about the practice and procedures. That’s really why we created this platform, and why we pour so much into training, education, and certification. It’s our goal to help the industry be more uniform in it’s practices, in the way we talk about hyperbarics, and in the way we apply hyperbarics to each individual patient.

Thanks for the question! I can't diagnose or offer medical advice on here, but generally speaking someone with normal health (no diseases or issues you're trying to heal from) can still greatly benefit from this therapy, and will tolerate it well. I didn't really understand why dissolved nitrogen alone causes problems, and not dissolved oxygen.
@HBOTUSA
@HBOTUSA 11 месяцев назад
Oxygen gets metabolized as we get more of it so there is no danger there. Nitrogen is inert and has no place to go so it is inflammatory and can cause blockages of blood flow
@markbr5898
@markbr5898 11 месяцев назад
@@HBOTUSA I appreciate the clarification. Another question I have been asking myself is why respiratory rate remains unchanged when oxygen flow is increased. Would it be that when more oxygen is inhaled, proportionately more carbon dioxide is produced?

You say that the problem is nitrogen, ok. Do you use 100% oxygen in the hyperbaric chamber? If you use 100% oxygen in your hyperbaric chamber, it is impossible to get nitrogen poisoning.
@victorthecarguy3126
@victorthecarguy3126 11 месяцев назад
100% oxygen at 2 ATM will kill a person; For deep diving to avoid nitrogen narcosis they use heliox. For deep dives the O2 in the mix is reduced to avoid the high O2 killing the diver. For medical O2 C02 is added or you can suffocate. Be careful about what you hear or read on the internet. Find your own sources to confirm it.

You should be warning people about the dangers of 100% oxygen, such as central nervous system toxicity -- in the same video as mentioning something like 100% oxygen with Hyperbaric Therapies. In fact, you are doing your viewers a huge disservice by not removing this video, and editing it... and putting it back up to include the warning, before they get the wrong idea.

@@HBOTUSA Thanks for the reply Dr. Sonners. It makes sense from that perspective, but, I am looking at it more from the idea that people that are watching this might watch the videos randomly, in no specific order... and might come across this video never watching another about the warnings. And might have no idea, that 100% Oxygen would be especially bad under HBOT. As a Dr., it is always a good idea to provide a short warning to anyone planning to "use HBOT" to seek medical advice prior to initiating therapy. I personally recommend the warning at the "beginning" of each video. Anyway, HBOT is very exciting therapy, and I am glad to see professionals making videos about it.
