Here in south central Virginia we are suffering from long-term drought-like conditions. I am making certain that I water sufficiently so that the new grass will survive. Water, water, water. Oh, if in Spring you put down an herbicide pre-emergent you will need to wait before applying seed.

Ohio....still mowing. In fact, I still have green (not brown/red) leaves on my trees. Yep, the leaves fall so fast that hours later it looks like u did no clean up. Will throw down my last bag of Milo on my lawn this weekend as rain and colder temps are approaching. Happy Holidays Cam!
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 7 месяцев назад
If its growin, keep mowin! That milo app is not a recommended application at this point in the season due to the nutrient sources needing warmer soil temp microbial activity for it to be broken down for the plant to be actually use what you are putting down. You would be better off saving that for next year bc most of what you put down will be wasted and not even used by the grass. Thats why I stated using a quick release source in the video.
@tycurtin7565
@tycurtin7565 7 месяцев назад
You really can mulch in 6 to 12 inches worth of leaves. Maybe more if you keep on top of it every 3 days. This not only improves the soil and moisture holding ability of the soil, but it help prevent weeds in the spring. Also, think about this. The tree root pull all kinds of nutrients from really deep. The leaves then help put those nutrients up high in the soil where the grass can use them. When mulching you want to mow over several times to get the leaves to be like confetti. Come April, you'll never even know that there were leaves mulched in.
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 7 месяцев назад
I understand all the benefits as I stated in the video, that is not my personal preference. I have a well established fertilization program and soil profile. I do not want more moisture holding capacity because of the dense shade that I have during the spring and summer. When the soil holds moisture in those shady areas it causes high disease pressure causing issues with the turf. As far as weeds, my lawn is established and weeds are basically not existent. I get a handful per year that I hand pull. I do mulch my grass clippings all year which is a better source for recycling nutrients back to the soil. Thanks for watching 👍🏾!
@tycurtin7565
@tycurtin7565 7 месяцев назад
@@ElevatedLawnscapes Totally understand your choice. I was just pointing out the benefits. I've got tons of trees and have had great success with mulching leaves. The soil seems to improve every year. Plus the main reason I do it is because it's so much easier on my back! :-) Great videos!!
@ElevatedLawnscapes

I'm team mulch with the leaves. My theory is that fertilizer is expensive so any free nutrients I can feed my lawn are a welcome relief. But I have to admit your lawn does look really nice without that leaf debris in it. I noticed the little garden in the back corner. Do you ever save any of those leaves to turn into compost for your garden? I had a very successful over seed this fall, but those couple of thin spots I'm going to have to look at until spring GRR!!!!Are you sure I can't seed those spots during the first snowfall LOL Last year was the first year I really pushed the nitrogen during the fall. This past spring I could barely keep up with the mowing. I did it again this fall. I got my last application down this past weekend ahead of NJ's 11/15 cut off. Lime will be going down later this month or early next month. For winter height of cut I was always told to lower it to prevent snow mold. I usually mow at 3", but when I start mulching leaves I lower just the back 1/2 of the deck to 2-1/2". It seems to mulch the leaves better that way. Thank you for the great advice as always. You have an amazing channel and I look forward to seeing it grow!
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 7 месяцев назад
Sounds like you have a plan. I do use some of the leaves for mulch in the garden. I know the historical thought was to reduce the height of cut but there is research that shows differently. But you are within the 2.25-3". Thanks for supporting the channel 🙏🏾!

I'm in Boston bro what is the fertilizer you suggest again for spring. Also do you aerate?
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 7 месяцев назад
I suggest the fertilizer that meets the needs of your lawn based on the soil test results. There are a number of good fertilizer brands out there depending on what you are looking for and your budget. I use different fertilizers for different reasons. Simple Lawn Solutions and Ecologel are good liquid fert brands and Lawn Supply, HyrBrix, Protene and Lebanon Country Club are good granular fert. I aerate when necessary and depending on the situation. I have not aerated my home lawn in 2 years.

Great tips, regarding the thickening from our overseed efforts in the fall coming into spring, would a pre emergent applied late January inhibit that process?
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 7 месяцев назад
It depends on the rate of pre-emergent that you apply. If you are planning to seed i recommend not applying pre-emergent in those areas. One question, where are you located and why are you applying pre-emergent in January?
@aubastian
@aubastian 7 месяцев назад
@@ElevatedLawnscapesI am going for a prodiamine in Zone 9B. My application strategy was going to be two applications one in late January and then another around mid May. For now all my seeding will only take place within fall.

Any concerns with throwing down fungicide at this time of year? Have some rust and don't want it to stress the lawn before deep winter.
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 7 месяцев назад
At this point in the season I would say no. Rust is not harmful to the grass long term and it may be a result of the changing fall into winter environmental conditions.

I'm in South Carolina with centipede grass, just going dormant. Can I cut and fertilizer?? What type of fertilizer?? Also I dont like mushroom.....how do I remove????
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 7 месяцев назад
No need to apply fertilizer to warm season grass at this point in the season. This video is for cool season grass type, the maintenance timing is different than warm season grass like centipede. Mushrooms are from long periods of high soil moisture, lack of sunlight, and organic matter. To get rid of mushrooms reduce the soil moisture and/or get more sunlight to the area. Mushrooms do not harm anything in the lawn so its not anything to really worry about other than having to look at them.
@CertifiedBoogeyman1601
@CertifiedBoogeyman1601 7 месяцев назад
Is there a minimum temp range for N fertilizer application? Right now it's low 60-70s with overnights in the low 40s, and occasional frost/freeze overnight. I feel like the window is closing rapidly, but I could stand to get another application since my first application was less than ideal.
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 7 месяцев назад
Its not a minimum temperature range for N applications but its based on the ability for the plant uptake the nutrients you are putting down. As I stated in the video September and October are the better months to make those applications. In colder temps the less the plant is going to uptake and you are wasting your money. Depending on where you are located you could make a low rate application if you are not within a fertilizer blackout period. I would use a liquid for a foliar application.

Hey Cam what did you end up overseeding with this fall? Did you go with the Tall Fescue K31 mix or straight Fescue mix?
@dvxAznxvb
@dvxAznxvb 7 месяцев назад
If you dont care how it looks or feels then k31; its much more hearty on drought and growth; it spreads much more aggressive but you have to mow more; TTTF is more consistent on growth and needs more fertilizer to be darker green potentially; k31 can only be dark green not blue green and blades are really wide which can be sometimes hard to distinguish from crabgrass at times
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 7 месяцев назад
I have never used K31 and never will! I have use a mix of TTTF and KBG (KentuckyBluegrass). I do not recommend K31 for your home lawn. There are way better options than thatn even if you want to be cheap. K31 is not a visually appealing grass for your home lawn.
@Braze-xxx
@Braze-xxx 7 месяцев назад
@@ElevatedLawnscapes Yes I was just asking to see what you had done this year. K31 is tall fescue also but, it grows in clumps and doesn't have that slight blue tint as Kentucky blue grass. I don't know how long you've been in the area but, back in the eighties and nineties K-31 was the most popular seed in Southern Maryland.
@ElevatedLawnscapes
@ElevatedLawnscapes 7 месяцев назад
@@Braze-xxx You are right about K31, I have never planted or talked about using K31. My front yard does have a little bit of that K31 in it because I have never fully renovated my front yard. I did not overseed my front yard, test plot, or the reel mowed strip in the front. I did overseed my backyard at 2 lbs per 1000 with a 85/15 mixture of MVS TTTF and MVS 365SS KBG.
