We have a 9 month old she-beagle, adopted her when she was 3.5 months old from an owner who gave her no training. We trained her with the help of a trainer. But still facing behavioural and obedience issues: potty training and jumping on other people. It’s impossible for crate train her and give her a bed because she pee on her bed every time and uses her crate only to get in and pee. She’s never happy i side the crate it’s like we’re punishing her to be in the crate. Please help.

Same with mine. I adopted him an my first time ever being around a Beagle. He's actually a Beagle Bull. Always wanting food. I make his food, cause about a month after I got him,he became sick, throwing up then blood in his stool. Vet couldn't find what caused it,but said to put him on wet food. She sold me Hills chicken stew. Five bucks a can. I decided I could make it myself a lot cheaper. Ten lbs of chicken, chicken livers, brown rice, Peas and carrots, sweet potatoes. He loves it. An I get ten quarts of food. Fifteen dollars to make. I feed him a quart a day. Plus his special treats. He loves Greek yogurt with a tablespoon of peanut butter swirled in it, an ice cream cone twice a week, bites of cheese when we're training. One day I left a loaf of bread on the table,I had just came home from shopping. Got everything put up,when the phone rang. It was my daughter and we talked a good thirty minutes. When I went back to the kitchen there was the bag, torn open an not a crumb on the floor. I just knew he was going to be sick from it,maybe another trip to the vet. But he did fine, but after that episode, I can't make a sandwich or toast without him begging for a piece. But I love him,and he loves me. The separate issues are for real.

As a former beagle owner I can say all 10 are true and with two beagles times two! To me the worst part of being a beagle owner is the day they cross the rainbow bridge. The best thing about owning a beagle is the absolute unconditional love they have for you. He miss the excitement of coming home to them. 😢

I’ve had 9 Beagles in my life. I would never own any kind of dog. My son has a Great Dane and my daughter a Golden Retriever. Honestly it was easier to train my Beagles. Beagles are fantastic for family life. I’ve had a Beagle in an apartment, on a farm, and in a suburban home. Once you know about this dog it’s a fantastic companion. I’ve rescued Beagles who worked at the border, show dogs, and hunting partners. No matter the Beagle - it needs stimulation….

My beagle passed back in June. I had him from 8 months of age to about 13 years. I did my research, and because of that, I found that housebreaking him and training him basic commands far less difficult than so many experts told me to expect. I'd leave him at my parents' place, and get a call he'd run out the door. Once he saw me pull up, he ran straight into my arms. One thing you mention regards training with treats; while I did that, I never let him get overweight (and I've seen plenty of obese beagles). Next time around, I'll avoid the training with treats, and rely on praise. Even my cat misses my beagle (the cat was fascinated with all those beagles in the video), but I need to make sure I'm ready for the responsibility again.

Wow, listening to this I realize how great our little Beagle was. She came to us at about 6 months old. We never formally trained her. To potty train her I simply used consistency. I would get up at least three times during the night to take her out. Within a year she was trained and no accidents in the house. When she came to us we did already have an older dog (Schnauzer mix). That may have helped her transition. Eventually the older dog died when the Beagle was 5. But I never saw her have separation anxiety. Of course we paid a lot of attention to her -- we did to both dogs. They were very much a part of our life. By the time the Beagle was the only dog, I think she was feeling very secure in her environment and understood our schedule. It never seemed to bother her when we left and most times we found her to be sleeping when we got home. We never locked her in a kennel, she always had free run in the house and she never destroyed anything. In fact, I did not think Beagles capable of destroying anything. That information kind of took me by surprise. Our Beagle was actually pretty calm all the time. The only time she showed excitement was if she caught a sniff of something while on walks. Often we had to run along with her as she 'followed' the trail -- 'blowing the trumpet' as we called it. She lived to 14, and it was cancer that took her. We have an acre of fenced property. Her most favorite thing to do was 'sniff' out food. Whether we should have done it or not; we would literally throw and scatter very small treats throughout the yard, then take her out. Always sniffing the ground she would find the first one, and then it was on. She could spend hours searching that yard looking for those snacks. During the cold winter I would scatter a few snacks throughout the house while she was sleeping and she would spend hours looking for them. The most special thing with her was, when you got home, she could smell you while in a deep sleep and she would wake up. Then she would climb down from her bed and promptly walk over to you and demand a hug. She would lift up on her back legs and pull on you with her front paws. You had to kneel down and literally wrap your arms around her and hug her. Once she got her hug she was good to go. I never had a dog that demanded a literal hug. So special.

It hit us hard as it was very unexpected, he was gone super fast, he didn't have any symptoms and he was our first dogson, we don't have any other children/dogs. He was super loving and smart, he understood hand signs and voice commands and we were looking forward to his first spring in Canada but he sadly didn't make it. We miss him every single day.

Independent is exactly who they are but understanding why is helpful. Yes...my neighbors did NOT like any of my beagles. Noisiest dogs ever but the more loving and snuggly dogs I have ever owned. And GOOD WITH CHILDREN. Oh my gosh, my granddaughters thought our dogs were there sisters. That alone made all the mayhem worth it.

You nailed it. I will say once our beagle got comfortable knowing this was his home and we would always come back, he never tried to escape and separation anxiety went away. I love beagles! They're one of my favorite dog breeds. But what really angers me is that people use beagles for animal testing because they're docile and trustworthy. That's why we should shop cruelty-free to save lives. The Beagle Freedom Project is where people should adopt them from cuz they are all beagles that have been rescued from labs. Adopt don't shop or buy from breeders.

Your comment hit hone for me. I adopted my beagle 5 years ago and was informed that he’d been used as a research dog before that. My poor Sergie was VERY skittish at first. He would cower when my dad was around so he was obviously mistreated by men. He doesn’t bark at ALL so, I’ve always thought that those bastards who used him as a research dog obviously showed him that barking was NOT appropriate. He’s still skittish with a lot of things but, he’s also come a LONG way from when I adopted him. Breaks my heart every time he cowers and starts shaking when he gets scared.

@@becky0474 I honestly think they are a shady organization. Priceless pets(also in southern CA) just rescued 150 beagles from animal testing. They are actively placing them in homes and that’s where we got our sweet lemon beagle from(around 3 years ago). I experienced the same as you and honestly came to the conclusion it’s just for Instagram and most likely just taking peoples money. Also on the priceless let’s the owner genuinely loves hound dogs and they are Constantly rescuing them and placing them in homes. I get wanting to find the right place but I have heard too many of the same stories coming from that other organization.

We had one beagle, that lasted a few months and we went and got another. I’ve had dogs before but I’ve never got my dog a dog until I had a beagle. One had a thin coat and the other had so much hair I couldn’t brush her enough. Her hair was so wiry it would stick in my foot like a needle. We used to say they were noses on feet and they would ask for kibble after they already ate. It helps with training. We trained our loud girl to use her “inside voice”. They knew a lot of commands and were super smart. We spent a lot of time training them, they are happier when they are trained.

I adopt senior beagles and at the moment have two. Wonderful companions! Funny, joyful, and loving. Both my beagles love meeting people and kids. I will add to #1 Stubbornness: "Nose on, Ears off." Beagles indulge in selective deafness, esp. when on a scent. So a firm hand is often needed on walks. Also, I emphasize Saro's requirement of exercise. Two decent walks a day go a long way to settle the beagles for training and quiet living.

You are 100% wrong on this...this video is very accurate BUT does NOT emphasize strongly enough how severe these issues are. YES they are GOOD with KIDS for sure and people.....but the rest makes it a vey hard dog to own AND you will probably lose him within a month and he WILL get killed in the street within seconds of escaping if you live in a City....they do not nor cannot see or hear Cars or vehicles when they are sniffing...thats how powerful their nose is....If you Want a Beagle....which of course you have that right....do so with the guidelines in this video AND you MUST have a Backyard and it should be impossible to escape....fence must be buried deep, and high and unclimable. It is a Very loving dog, but hard as hell to take care of...had over 30 animals...Beagle was the hardest.

All true. Thanks Saro! 😊 I wish I knew this before I got a Beagle. I had many dogs in my lifetime, but this breed is the most hyper, and never wanted to be leashed, she would cry loud so she would get what she wants. They are smart too, so u are right, my beagle knows how to even escape and find her way out to get what she wants. They are stubborn and I have to discipline her all the time. Though she is calm and love it that she can be independent sleeping alone , separated from us. Of all the breeds i had, i like it least, and my favorite is dachshund because they are sweet and behave and easy to train.

Yes, all true. Sadly mine passed shy of 12 years. He was very healthy up to that point and then he developed back issues which no vet could tell my what the issue was did not set well with me. He was given steroids initially and it went away, it came back 6 months later, more steroids and seemed to be back to normal. However, the third time it didn't work. After a spinal tap he lost all function in his rear legs and was so desperately hurting. He was all of those things listed. I wish I had two but everything else you learn. Luckily he wasn't a barker/bayer when home alone but did have extreme separation anxiety. I had him at work while he was young and I couldn't even leave the room knowing my co worker had him. I worked on it with him and he did get better. Despite all of the things we beagle lovers deal with we enjoy how much joy they bring to our lives. They're always happy, wan't to engage you and want to be with you.....just make sure you stick to a schedule and tucker him/her out you'll less likely have a mischievous hound while you're out.

This is for anyone who is thinking about being Beagl Owner: My companion is one year old now and I kind of discard most of the comments. For example: Beagles are foody but try him feeding the same food for a week .... he will end up sleeping empty stomach! About behaviour trainings ..... it depends so much on how social you made him during his 1st year. Since he have seen and sniffed so many people down the line ...he hardly cares who passes by ... by he makes sure who enters his house...which is something desirable. In the end I would say I am more than satisfied to have a beagle in my family who understands me the way no one can

I have a beagle her name is Queenie, she is stubborn at times, when it's time to leave the local airport that has a lot of land for her to run and explore. I found that my beagle needed 2 or 3 hours of strong independent roaming everyday. This roaming let's her be the dog she is breed to be. We tried the doggy park , it did not work because all types of dogs come in from German Shepherds, Great Danes, pitbull etc. So I found this local airport that has bushes, wildlife, and well maintained. So I let her of leash and she roams for hours. I bring her home she plays around the house and she is good til the next day. Oh beagles love to chew on plastic so make sure you put away eyeglasses, bluetooth, chargers.

I had a beagle for 8 years after our prior *springer died. Our beagle came to us as an overweight 6 year old from the Humane Society. He had been turned into the Humane Society because of his begging and someone in his former home developed allergies to him. First thing I did was put tubby beagle on a diet and got his weight under control. Since I never had the opportunity to train him I introduced training slowly and one thing at a time. After a couple years he became a fine companion and he has only escaped our 5 acre property one time and I saw him in a neighbors pasture. I grabbed his leash and went and retrieved him. Today being a 14 year old elderly beagle he is great with his companion dogs in the house but he does set his own schedule and comes to me at the set time everyday for what he wants, needs and even comes to me at his bed time for a hug then walk to his bed and get his nightly brushing, Coopers speaks to me with barks and when it is treat time he is very vocal when I get his celery and peanut butter treat. Cooper our beagle can be demanding and when I grab the car keys of course that is his time alone with me. His other companions is a jack Russell and a springer spaniel. The funny thing is when I put the food out he eats his food and by the time he is finished he has his head in the springers dish which is empty but since they get alone so well they never have a food fight it is just 2 heads in one bowl.

We love our Beagle never ever think twice about our choice. Loki is so smart so loyal and has never behaved any different then any other pup. It’s all about the consistency. He was never crated either that don’t work for us. He gets plenty of attention great diet lots of excercise and has his space in the home. Yep that’s right like all dogs need balance. Not lazy owners who feed there dogs ppl food and no attention. And the love he gives is unconditional.

Never get just one beagle, always get two. Wow I typed this before watching your video, LOL. They are so high energy that you really need two of them because when you are tired of playing they will play with each other. Howling is not a problem as howling is what beagles do! We call beagle shedding "beagle glitter". BTW all pure bred beagles will have white on the tip of their tail, on all four feet and on their face. Watch as they trail something that tail with its white flag will be sticking straight up. That's bred into them so the hunter can see them working in tall grass or brush. They are also one of the oldest breeds going back thousands of years to ancient Egypt.

I am so lucky with my Beagle, he doesn't beg for food at the table or goes for the bin which is right by his bed . Once he has his breakfast & dinner he is not lnterested at all in food or treats, which I've tried so hard with him for training 🤣 but saying that ??? Chicken has helped alot with that job & Finley is such a lovely Beagle & well behaved rounded dog . Only problem i do experience now is that he thinks that he owns the hole neighbour hood & ever one that walks pass our windows he barks !! Part from that he is beautiful and first class Beagle 😍. So any tips for you would be fantastic. Love from ENGLAND in Sheffield South Yorkshire ❤ Thank you 😊 🙏

I have a 10yo beagle. We adopted him from a shelter and he previously changed 4/5 family because of his behaviour I suppose. He is aggressive sometimes and he can not stand some kind of dogs. He sometimes bits even if we just cuddle him, maybe he thinks we're trying to do something bad. We have him now for 5 years and he improved a lot but there are some behaviour i think he will neve lose. Anyway, i love him, he follows me wherever i go, sit beside me and always want me to rub his belly. Beagles are adorable!

Hi, thanks so much for this excellent video. I think a life expectancy of 16 - 18 (?) years is more what a Jack Russell or Chihuahua would have though; but even 12 - 15 years is amazing. We lost our German Shepherd with only 7 years due to DM (a degenerative disorder), and decided to get a Beagle also because their life expectancy is an estimated double (many German Shepherds die too young unfortunately due to health problems). BUT NOW we have fallen VICTIM to what you call "problem number 10"! We've been enjoying the past 8 months with our Beagle so much that, just yesterday, the decision was made in the household to ADD a second Beagle in spring/summer of next year. Once our boy is a responsible adult, lol, let's hope he'll ever get there. Frankly I would be afraid to adopt a Beagle with uncertain background and genetics, just due to the health issues they might have. Some Beagle owners we know did this and had their puppy come to the home with life-threatening conditions, and I'm not selfless enough to be ok with experiencing this: Spending a year witnessing our rescue German Shepherd's health decline has left a mark for us. So, the next Beagle will be (once again) a puppy from a professional Beagle breeder who performs health testing and genetic screening on his Beagles.

I wish more people would watch this - here in Portugal, lots of people are trying to rehome their Beagle via social media, coming up with all kinds of excuses (like, the landlord doesn't allow the dog any more - when the law clearly states that no landlord is allowed to forbid owning a dog or cat...). I strongly suspect it's because of the noise, and the Beagle destroying people's home when left alone all day, whilst people are working. Luckily, we live in a very remote area in a large house with land around. Our dogs are in the house most of the time, but even when outside, excessive barking is not allowed. But then again, this is Portugal, land of the barking dogs around the clock, and the local rabbit hunting dogs have the same bay and howl, so people will be used to the sound palette, lol!

My beloved beagle/lab mix crossed over the rainbow bridge this past Christmas Eve at age 11 (she got severely sick very quickly). But I am thinking of getting a lemon beagle once I am emotionally ready. Best thing I did was crate train her. Didn’t have to worry about any trouble while i am gone. She found out that she got even more treats if she went in on her own so she would go in any time she thought I could be leaving 😂 the noise thing was never a problem. She was loud outside and when she didn’t get her way but she didn’t react to noises outside or anything. She was the best dog ever and would recommend a beagle to anybody who has time and energy to invest in a dog

I would say my hardest problem with beagles is they r so curious they tend to search for ways out of the yard and r stubborn to come when called. And he is stubborn with the kennel. He used to sleep in our bed all the time but since we got a second dog he sleeps in his cage together and he hates it and would throw a loud tantrum.

"those eyes that demand more food"=100% true!!! I will say I've been very lucky with my beagles. I've had 5 total, the most at once 3 plus 1 foster=4. They have been quiet and done super well on leashes, even walking 4 at once. The separation anxiety has been hit or miss (I'm sure many of you have half eaten miniblinds too). They definitely shed, but at least it doesn't float like husky hair. They definitely are escape artists (just ask Ruthie who ate her way through grandma and grandpa's laundry room door).
