Do not make THESE 15 Pokemon card investing MISTAKES like I did!
Today, we’re covering 15 mistakes I see Pokemon card investors and collectors make every single day. Many of them I’ve made myself, and I REALLY REALLY don’t want you to do the same.
Important note: I am not a financial advisor. You should consult with one before making any major investment or financial decisions.
DO NOT for the love of Arceus make major financial decisions based solely on one talking head on RU-vid. Do additional research and make your own independent decisions.\

As someone who sell Japanese Pokemon PSA cards and Invest. Here are a few mistakes I see and some I made in the beginning 1. I used to buy any secret rare including the energies and send them off to PSA. If they don't come back a PSA 10. Its a hard sell 2. Don't buy raw cards without physically looking at them first. First thing is examined the back for whitening. If there is, Its NOT a PSA 10 3. Buying every booster box that comes out. Most are not valuable. I stick to the Japanese Christmas high class sets (tag team, V star, etc..) Maybe I forgot a few things but feel free to ask.

Note: I always record what I pay for a certain card or any collectible item because if something happens to me my spouse knows what the worth of of my collection is worth and won’t sell for any price less than what I paid for it. I keep an album of purchased receipts in a safe along with photos of each item I feel may increase in value. Great for insurance purposes and great for your family members to know what is worth money should something happen to me. I remember working for one of the first pokemon retail store in 1995 and I have 3 binders full of the first pokemon cards. They were kept safe and I am sure very valuable now . I am 69 years old and started teaching my son how to have fun being a collector of trading cards as I know one day my collection will be his. Have a great day enjoyed your podcast, great information.

Everything depicted in your thumbnail Hasn't gone down in value at all. The Charizard UPC has steadily Stayed the same and those two cards are doing incredibly well Not to mention the evolutions pack which is obvious.Pokémon is far less about investment and much more about enjoyment. I know 90% of everybody came in for an investment opportunity and I get that to a degree but I wish everyone would stop worrying so much about value and start worrying about how much fun it is and how much they genuinely enjoy collecting.

In my non professional opinion, zenith is going to be great sealed products down the line. There are two big reasons I believe this. (1) It's the last yellow border set that will ever be released. (2) It's going to have an insane full art cards lineup. Let me know what you guys think!
@cardboardape
@cardboardape Год назад
Yep, I think you’re dead on with this prediction!
@jamesgraves9858
@jamesgraves9858 Год назад
I do agree with the yellow border thing. I said that today at Gamestop. I don't think for the cards it is going to be memorable though. These sets are going to be shrouded in years and years of desirable cards and sets that are all printed to oblivion. Pokémon is so popular now and the chances it sustains and GROWS over the years is not good. Prices are rising, pull rates are awful, sets are larger and more diluted than ever before and by the time 2040 comes around there are going to be how many cards that are considered popular? Tons. Tons. We'll all be on our death beds in 50 years trying to sell or pass along a Moonbreon lol Saturating the market to the actual moon. My grandma always said, the house always wins. Pokémon can reprint, they can do literally anything. We are hoarding some things but how much is being hoarded? How much isn't even in the hands of actual consumers willing to OPEN the product. Things to think about. I agree with yellow border nostalgia but aside from that this set will be buried one day beneath years and years of insane and new artwork they'll inevitably create. The house always wins.
@dalton10000
@dalton10000 Год назад
@@jamesgraves9858 The house is already winning - but kids are still getting into it eg. my son. So one day they have money and will want the cards of their youth. It's the 1# franchise after all
@jamesgraves9858
@jamesgraves9858 Год назад
@@dalton10000 I absolutely understand that but at that point what are they going to be collecting? The cards produced as they are adults or the ones they wanted as kids? lol I'm collecting modern currently but began primarily with vintage. The production of cards is through the roof. Sun and Moon was likely the last of the series that were somewhat limited & it was actually much more fun back then. I just think we're taking this a little too seriously right now, don't you think? RU-vid channels are just thriving off of speculation about a hobby involving fictional characters. I love those fictional characters, but let's be real...

I think one of the most important tips in collecting anything is quality over quantity. If you are able to afford $5000 a year or more it will be better for you to stay away from sub $50 products. Invest in the highest quality product you can afford that takes up the least space. You cannot have everything so always plan what your end goal will be before starting to collect and buy from goal to goal with focus. Don't buy based off fomo or emotions. Only buy based of research.

Few key take aways: 1) I like the buy X number and then sell 50% when the product increases by 100% to recoupe your investment 2) Explanation why sealed products are better (and imo easier) to invest in then individual cards 3) Take something as Pokemon as a part of your investment portfolio not 100%

Great advice. I think sealed will do solid for the most part too, but I do have fears that since 2020 the % of sealed collectors and people holding sealed product has skyrocketed. Eventually it gets opened or if sealed hobby collecting continues to grow it can still be a great thing! If Pokemon card collecting hits another down era like XY, people will lose hard like they did back then. But as we saw demand rallied back and those that held were heavily rewarded. Super interesting possibilities.
@cardboardape
@cardboardape Год назад
I wouldn’t be surprised if we go through a down era again before it rallies back at the 30th anniversary. If so, I see it as an opportunity to keep picking up sealed products that most people will miss out on, only to come back years later and want to buy the stuff they missed. Could be totally wrong, and if I am I’ll have a good time opening everything with you guys on this channel 😉

DEFINITELY a mistake to project value appreciation of older product onto current product. it’s arguable what percentage of total Pokemon sales in the US go directly into bins & closets but it’s gotta be close to 50%. with prices where they are right now people are hoarding cases of product that they do not intend to open. they see sets like CR and FS eventually maturing & appreciating the way XY sets have done, to use the example previously mentioned, because there just werent the quantity of “sealed investors” holding for the long term that we have today. so in 3, 5, 7 years it simply isnt going to be anywhere near as uncommon or difficult to find someone with 20 cases of Chilling Reign looking to offload a few boosters as it is finding sealed boosters of Breakthrough or Fates Collide or Evolutions. i also agree there will be another down era, its virtually guaranteed with Pokemon printing everything to demand. the Zard UPC fiasco knocked A LOT of rookie prospectors & speculators out of the game, either preordering stupid bundles or paying well over MSRP or buying an overabundance of ZUPC’s because Celebrations UPC was an instant bank & getting stuck with the bricks… with the 2nd wave yet to come that box is going to take its time getting back to MSRP, nevermind appreciating exponentially like CUPC did. combine the overprinting & hoarding with the coming increase in MSRP & we’re likely to see both casual collectors AND smaller LGS’ shutting down because ppl already dont want to pay current MSRP & small shops are slashing prices by 25% in some cases upon preorder. there are still diamonds to be found. theres a certain Dragons box exclusive to a big box retailer that is absolutely beautiful but overlooked. there is also a Kyurem box out there with Skies in it that ppl have relatively ignored. these are some examples of sets currently in production that wont have the same abundance of hoarded product because none of it can be bought in cases or for sub-MSRP but there is definite value there. cheers everyone 👍🏽

There is flaw in the logic in investing in preferred products, as those products will ultimately be kept sealed far more than those that are less desirable which in turn causes less desirable products to become far more scarce. Looking at the swsh block, what is the most valuable etb? Yea it was printed less, but because it was less desirable. Just a thought.
@cardboardape

Rebel Clash was a trash set, but it definitely goes to show that scarcity matters. I think you have to take that into account when choosing what to buy, for sure.

These are probably the most realistic points I've heard anyone talking about regarding investing in Pokémon products. Much better than a lot of these "investing" PokeTubers. Although another important point to consider is to keep proof of how much you paid for the item. Otherwise your tax burden at the time of sale is going to be larger than it should be.

Point 1 cannot be overstated. Ripping packs is gambling. If you're ever in doubt of that, look up the pull rates of Evolving Skies and see how many packs, on average, it would take to "statistically guarantee" a Moonbreon... I think it was in the neighborhood of 1,666 packs... at the current $8 a pack for ES, that's a whopping $13,328 dollars to find 1 Moonbreon. TCG's are gambling.

You obviously didn’t listen to the video in detail because he had some contradicting points

Just started collecting with my daughter. Thanks for the advice...one question, should I sleeve and top load the holo's and reverse holo's ? Are they worth that? Or just store and keep the major hits ... thanks sir

When we opened packs as kids we did not know what gambling was, nor Pokémon cards as an investment. Our investments were sleeves for holo’s so we can play them on holidays with our cousins. Up to this day I still live with that thinking, difference is I’m just collecting them. I get the point you’re making, the Poké market is crazy now, I was surprised how expensive the base sets are now. We bought those $5 back in the day, so it’s harder for collectors like me to decide. What’s priceless thou is having my old collection and keeping it without selling it.

I remember those days! And I have nothing but respect for those that still collect in that way. I find it really fun to collect while also trying to build a collection that will grow in value over time. But I understand that’s not everyone’s cup of tea

@@cardboardape those were the days! Now we teach them to our kids. And yes, I respect that, I have friends who I buy from, some of whom are in the market as well. They get sad whenever I turn down their offers, I trade my spares instead because that’s how we did it before when there was no social media. Great content and thanks for making the Poké community aware! 🤘
