This reminds me of 1993 when my girlfriend (now wife) took me home to meet her parents. I was in Culture Shock! ... I did realize once I got to her island, Guimaras, in the Province, it's day and night difference from Manila. I hate Manila. But, over the past 31 years, and the many, many trips we went home, it's where I will live the rest of my life. You're not wrong, about what you discussed, but of a country of over 7000 islands, I'm surprised you kept going to major cities. I have always described Manila as Harlem, and I would never consider spending more than a day there again (since my 2 weeks in 1993). But, the Philippines is a poor, third world country and like most of these types of countries, you just have to realize that they are doing the best that they can. Did you not go to a SM? Or to a Mall, like the Mall of Asia? I have found no problem finding aircon, nice grocery stores, great food. But, I was lucky to have my girlfriend and her family with me to show me around. And, I think with my mind on the people, It's easy to look past their impoverishment and realize that the Philippines exists despite hundreds of years of being occupied by Spain and Japan, to being some of the most hospitable people in the world. There are plenty of videos online that talk about the Tabo and the CR, (No TP) and the conditions of street food and water. The reason you don't see RU-vidrs promoting the slums (usually) is because those kind of videos don't get the views. Maybe I should go through Los Angeles and San Francisco and show off the homeless, drug addicts lining the streets, shitting on the sidewalks and post these as to why I don't want to live in California anymore. Trust me, the US has a lot going wrong with it and where the Philippines has only gotten better over the years, the USA is headed in the wrong direction. Bottom line, I respect you for making your video and I also thank you for twice asking for forgiveness from the people that you don't intend to disparrage their way of life. This fact that your money can go far (usually, only in Rents and Labor) is because they are so desperate to earn some money. They're poor. They're over populated. But, here in California, you can't swing a stick in a hospital and not hit a Filipino nurse or doctor. The window washing thing happens in the US too, and the guy that finds a spot for you to park is working, not begging. It's not a scam ... he shows you were you can park without getting a ticket. I've never had to deal with the cops, other than LTO, but again, I would blame that more on the City than the Filipino. Cities suck, period. In California I stay away from them. In Texas, I stay away from them. In the Philippines, I stay away from them.

Brother I echo everything you just said. I was born and raised in Calif. and I can tell you the only difference between L.A. and Manila is about $10,000 USD cost. Both are equal shit holes of humanity.

I'm in 100% agreement with you TitoBear, my wife is from the province as well, Iloilo near Passi City. Enjoyed my time on her family's farm the many times I've been there, but then again I grew up in the country myself and never liked the city, here in the USA or the Philippines. We'll probably move to the Philippines soon as well and hunker down for the world collapses.

Hmm, interesting take on the Philippines. I would be interested to hear where in the three areas you mentioned, that you chose to stay and visit. All of the things you described are able to be found in the Philippines, but it perturbs me that you portray the whole country, or even all sections of the city as like xxx. To find the slum areas you showed in your pictures, you have to seek them out and those would NOT be areas where your B&B rentals are found. Yes there is crushing poverty, but not in most places, yes there is putrid trash and uncleanliness, but not everywhere. It is completely unbelievable that you researched the Philippines before you went there - sorry if it upsets you, but I'm "calling you out on that". Travel books, guide books, online travellers, they all talk about the poverty and the conditions, I do not believe you could have visited any of those places and not been aware. Traffic - it is congested and a majority of the local traffic is motorcycles, whether city or provincial. There are rules, and there are driving conventions, but you need to be alert all the time. If it was not sprawling highways and land intensive motorways that you might have expected, well wake up Gertie, you are in a developing country. The heart was too much? I thought you researched the country before moving there "to live" (lol) It's a tropical country darling, that means hot and muggy. I know many people that have lived for years in Manila and live that entire lifestyle without leaving airconditioned malls, homes, shops and recreation. There is elitist lifestyles in the Philippines just like any place, that you didn't find any in your brief three month trip is amazing. You claim you lived in Manila, no Greenbelt?, no BGC? No Ayala? were you really in Manila (NCR) or were you trying to camp out in Tondo or the back streets of Paranaque, or Quezon City at the cheapest place you could find. Yes you can find terrible rundown areas, just the same as you can in LA, San Fransisco, Boston, or New York. People sleeping in those streets in ALL those American cities, eg just couple blocks off Rodeo Drive, so your comparison is a bit off. As for not being able to find your favourite super sized 10kg box of sugar and GMO garbage calling it cereal, I could say you don't look as if you went short. Maybe S & R didn't cross your radar. City transport in Manila, has hundreds of buses, jeepneys, motorcycles, Mass Transit trains, taxis, and if you can afford, fleets of airconditioned limousines and town cars, but a) you need to open you eyes, and b) it really helps -as a newbie - if you use your high skills as a communicator, to ask people to introduce you to the system. (Sorry, I know sarcasm is low level wit). I am sure you meant well, but this video, indicates to me, that you failed to research, failed to communicate, and failed utterly to experience any sort of a spectrum during your 30 day jaunts in 3 cities in the Philippines. Lastly, you said you were very unlikely to return, and I can understand that. Inexperienced travelers are often disturbed when places they visit are not the same as their beloved home, in the same way as the people you visit are often shocked by the brash complaining tourists that tromp through their world. Based on limited information in your videos, I would think unsuited for travel, unwelcome most places you go, and happily seen off at the airport. Add to that not suitable as a travel vlogger, and that about sums it up. Something positive - next time, or place, try chatting up vloggers BEFORE you plunge in, and get them to introduce you to people who can guide you properly so you get the whole picture. If not? well I'm not your teacher, but Karen & Ken's travel troubles is an unfilled niche.

You are very wrong about seeking out the poverty. The philippines doesn't hide its poverty like other SE Asian countries. Even Makati and BGC doesn't hide it. I've been there over 25 times. I plan to live there next month. I found an island where the poverty is livable and somewhat of a good infrastructure and if you think i am going to let that cat out of the bag, your smoking crack.. Aircon? you go out for a 1/2 day in some areas to run errands and you may not have Aircon the entire time sweating like a pig and getting dehydrated to the point you are sick. (been there done that) Some of the things they are spot on and some exaggerated. The best way to see the country is on Scooters. But understand, if you are out of the metroplex and need t a ride down the street, sitting sideways on a trike is about as unsafe it can get. Try getting into a Jeepney with a backpack at 6'2". nearly impossible not to hit people all the way to you seat. Most areas outside of Manila don't have Grab or taxi's. That leaves you will renting something or the local transportation which is very hot in a jeepney. You watch on RU-vid how cute it is to use the public transportation until you have to use it. The train system is really useless for travelers. It doesn't go very far. The food can get you sick as a dog. I wanted to die standing up from one visit from the food. The best way to visit there for travelers that want to see the real Philippines is to go to a popular island and just be a tourist if you don't plan to live there. You will find the people as friendly as any place in the world. There ya go, Have a nice Day!

Great comment. Being in the service and traveling all over the world, one of the biggest tips for folks I can offer is this. Whenever I would get to a place that I knew I was going to be staying for a while, I would get a taxi. I would tell the taxi driver that I wanted to see the good, the bad, the beautiful, and the ugly of the surrounding area. They would normally take me to places I wouldn’t mind being in, places that I wouldn’t want to be in, and places that I needed to steer clear of. It was a small price to pay for my safety, and my guys and gals safety. Heck, the taxi driver would show me where to eat, shop, and for any scams to look out for. They see, hear, and know what’s going on. It saddens me that folks go to these countries, expecting everything to be easy, and the same as the U.S.A., get discouraged right out of the gate, and really don’t give the people, the area, the region, or the country a chance. There is poverty everywhere. There is filth everywhere. Every culture is different, but there are beautiful places, beautiful people, wonderful food, and wonderful cultures everywhere. You just need to open your eyes, ears, mind, and heart to experience them. All of the issues these two mention in this video are issues we have right here in the U.S. From the racial profiling to the food insecurities, to the homeless approaching, to the scams. It doesn’t only apply to the Philippines, or Asia, it’s in every large city, in every country.

Came from Old Dog's channel - Old Dog New Tricks. Sounds to me like this is your first time trying to live in SE Asia. I had a similar reaction coming straight from the US during my first year in Thailand - food poisoning from street food, going to the hospital looking pregnant my abdomen was so bloated, and being told my symptoms were psychosomatic by the "doctor" while I was concerned about dying from sepsis. Took some time for me to adjust and now I love SE Asia and I have great respect for the people and culture. I would have made the same video you did after only three months. Perspective is everything and you folks simply haven't been in SE Asia long enough to appreciate the differences between there and the US. Could have named your video "Culture Shock."

Being a Filipino born in Manila and raised in my province til I moved to the US at the age of 8 is all true except the food. I grew up eating Filipino food and continued to eat Filipino food while living here in Southern California. That’s my country and living in the US for 50 plus years will retire once I reached 62 and enjoy traveling all over the Philippines and hanging out with all my relatives in Manila as well as in my Bicol province. Here from Paul's (Old Dog) channel. I was in Manila last October/November. What turned me off about the city was the traffic, lack of cleanliness (no hot water or toilet paper in restrooms at restaurants, meat hanging in markets in 100 F weather, cockroaches in the AirBnB, and the stray dogs) and pollution. I knew about the poverty and was prepared for it. Once I got out of the city and into the provinces I enjoyed my stay.

In America 🇺🇸 (80) percent is unaffordable for retirement. That is why over (19,000) Americans live in the Philippines 🇵🇭. Thousands more in other countries. Now as a widower, my children are grown and have children too. Dad has to retire where his retirement can go far. Like you can hire a full time maid for ($150) a month. There are a few rare neighborhoods that are like that but the majority of places are quite clean. Maybe you just visited the poorer sections of Tondo, but that in no way represents the Philippines. Supermarkets have great selections of food. If you did any research before coming you would of known that driving in the Philippines is not recommended. I could go on but all in all a horrible video. And also there are big grocery stores and plenty of good restaurants in the Philippines if you know how to look. However, I am moving back to the US because as a 70 year old, I am concerned about the medical infrastructure here. I don't believe that the US medical system is the best in the world. But, it is better than the Philippines and at my age this becomes more important. I will always have fond thoughts of the Philippines and am lucky enough to bring my partner back to the US, she is the best part of the Philippines!

Of course there was poverty everywhere, its a very poor country Marcos Snr plunged at least half the country into poverty during his reign, how could you end up in a country without knowing this sort of thing, you could have just googled poverty in the Philippines and you would had seen for yourself, most countries that side of the world have huge poverty issues, however you are correct about most things in this video, its poor, it has trash everywhere, food can be very hit and miss (I hated Jollibee) but there really are lots of beautiful places in the Philippines and ive been to them.

I found this video thanks to Old Dog Paul. You two give very honest feedback about your experiences, I too have witnessed the same on my trips to the Philippines (except for driving, I only used Grab to get around). Some cities will have more Western style options like shopping and dining, but they are not cheap. In fact, depending on the item or place, the cost can be equal to or even more than in the United States - and yes, that includes gasoline too. Thank you for your transparency about your experiences.

I was sad watching this. Even a small amount of research would start to prepare anyone for what a developing country is like. There is a big difference between coming over her to live vs. staying in a 5 star resort in El Nido. I am a little confused with why someone would expect something different. My hope was that by the end of the video, you were going to say the one positive reason to retire here was the Filipinos and their incredible generosity and friendliness. (But yes, I also am thankful for the exchange rate on a personal level, but as you allude to, there is a direct link between the exchange rate and the poverty.) I guess for some of my fellow Americans like myself, it has been all about the adventure and experiencing how the other half of the world lives. As much as you tried to be apologetic with the "we mean no disrespect", it felt very condescending. However, I also also want to fully admit that when I visit back to the US, I am filled with mixed feelings of completely enjoying the standard of living I grew up with....and the disdain for so much entitlement and blind privilege.

Almost none of these issues exist in the places I lived. If you live near slums, obviously there are beggars. I’ve never been extorted by the “police” - that’s a down right lie. Traffic enforcers are not police and cannot arrest you. This isn’t Mexico, the police don’t extort foreigners. All of the grocery stores I shops at are large and have air conditioning. Then went several More times and then Bang I met a woman about my age and intellect and it was instant long in-depth conversations and her morals, values, Christian beliefs that had me interested and when i met her family of middle to high class i knew it wasn't fake and she was a sweet widow and like me worked long hours and spent the time with extended family. So more trips and time visiting different islands and traveling with her and I knew this is where i was going to retire early to. Just like the USA a person can see the Bad or the Good as it is what you concentrate on. I saw this video as Humorous and Laughed with it not against the people and even my girlfriend admitted she chuckled. It might be truthful but a Shame they did not see the Beautiful parts or were to busy seeing the bad. I guess a person can see it as a ruined day for one incident and another can see it as a great day with a slight glitch. It is ALL in perspective as to how you see it. Yell "I Love you" at your dog or spouse and they may run away as tone and the way you say it is just as important as what you say.

I avoided the larger cities where most of those negatives exist but these things are still true to a lesser degree in the smaller towns. Vloggers living there may deemphasize these negatives to avoid bad feelings w the locals but for them the pros still outweigh the cons. I have spoken w a couple of them in person and the central Phils is their choice over other countries: Pros being low costs and friendly traditional english speaking culture. They also are fine w the heat but many live at higher, cooler elevations still close to towns. Its no surprise they love it or they wouldn’t stay there, but its good to have your take as a reality check, especially if in the larger cities. I learned real fast local women have a fetish for white men there. I was approached twice in the 10 days I was there, asking if I was interested in a wife. I watched the video and having been to Panama, Thailand and very poor parts of Mexico where I have seen poverty like they mentioned. I found it funny they complained about the lack of American groceries... hmmm... you go to a foreign country and complain there is no Walmart or Costco but other videos they go to the big malls,I kea, etc. in PI. Should be noted there are big grocery stores in the PI so saying there are no big grocery stores is wrong; but it depends where you are and dependent upon your budget. Complain about driving, cleanliness, hot and humid weather, open air markets where you can haggle on price (which is a thing in many third world countries), etc. No toilet paper, gee... again in a foreign country that doesn't use toilet paper and complain about that. I mean what do you expect when you go to a THIRD WORLD COUNTRY that is in a tropical area? Surprised at the weather and how hot and humid it is... I guess taking a few seconds to check the weather during the year was not considered? Yes the beaches and resort areas are very nice along with the major city centers but in the end you get what you pay for. They didn't go to PI to retire (obviously). I think they just took a trip to make a video in order to get views (and thats ok). A lot of what they said is true but again, they never intended to retire there or go to places where people do retire in PI. Also didn't bring up that people can get better accommodations and services which is dependant on one's budget. If you look at their channel they highlight some great places in PI with largest malls, Ikea, resort areas, etc. Then they have videos of Malaysia and other places - IOW they were just tourists and never really wanted to fit into PI or anywhere else like a retiree or expat would. They get some of worst footage to highlight the poverty but those places are not where retirees or digital nomads go and live. I don't know any expats that live in the slums; similar to people in the US don't retire to slums or ghettos (duh). Fact is their most recent videos are them back in the US. So yea they did the travel propaganda videos too, which they admit, but seems like they are straining and grasping for views with videos like this. They never intended to retire and live overseas in the first place so need to keep that in mind as well.

And that’s where you’re wrong. We sold our house and our cars and everything to go to the PI to live. We absolutely did research about the weather and where to live etc. When we went to get a house to stay there long term, we then figured out it wasn’t for us. The houses you can live in for $400 a month are not luxurious like the bloggers show on RU-vid which is what I was pointing out. The houses that are nice and spacious are comparable to prices in the US. When we did our research we read from multiple online forums and even talked to Filipinos who told us “You can get a nice house right on the beach where you can look out your window and see the beach for $400/month”. That was only true to a certain extent. You can get a one bedroom house on the beach with no AC and not hot water and a tiny refrigerator for $400. But to have what we were looking for the price was comparable to US prices. And you point out that I only talked about the bad things in this video. Of course. I see you checked out all of my other videos. So you should’ve seen where I pointed out the good things about the Philippines too right? This was ONE video dedicated to telling why we left and it was our honest opinion. We did leave the city, multiple times. Check out my TikTok. We went and explored the provinces and looked for a house there. But we did not want to live in a SHACK. Not once did I insult the people of the Philippines or their personalities. I’m simply saying the country is not for us. We went to Malaysia and had a wonderful time for the 3 months we were there. We also checked out Thailand and Japan and Korea. We went all over the place and checked out different cultures to see what we liked and didn’t like. Our ultimate decision was that we liked it better in our home country. I missed my family and I missed home. So we came home. I’m not like other people who want to judge people from sitting on my couch behind the computer or tv. I got up, I spent money in these foreign countries and I experienced it for myself. I give myself credit for doing what most people wouldn’t. I took a chance. I ended up not liking it and that’s perfectly okay. To respond to the others commenting as well, I cannot be bullied into liking something I didn’t like. For the people insulting the US and talking about how awful our country is, that’s fine that you feel that way. It doesn’t bother me one bit. It’s my country and it’s where I’m from but how YOU feel about it does nothing for me. You don’t like us and don’t like our country but you have no problem marrying all of the Americans that come over there and coming back to the US with them and spending their US military money or their US social security money. So you have your opinion and I will have mine. Everyone have a nice day.
@theVariedLife
@theVariedLife 5 месяцев назад
Yea, not buying it. BTW I never said you insulted the PI or its people, so don't even know why you brought that to the table. Oh wait, I do, cause something is fishy and you want to make it look like I am a less moral person than you = didn't work. As for saying you couldn't find nice places for a good prices I highly doubt that. I searched some places in PI where expats and people retire. Found lots of newer properties with AC like a 3/2 house for ₱25,000 Monthly ($450 a month) in Bagacay, Dumaguette. Many other similar places all around the PI, so yea either you are stretching the facts or you didn't do simple research on where to go with the budget you had. Lots of other places with their own pools for $500 or more a month with multiple AC units. So year forgive me for calling your videos into question. You said you went to PI and lived their for 3 months, what retirement visa did you have? It must be a coincidence that the length of your stay where you were "retiring" in PI was the same amount of time as a tourist visa which is 90 days. Hmmm... Personally I think you took a vacation for a while and spent 90 days in the Philippines and other places. IOW you didn't submit for a long term retirement visa from any of those places, but thats just me. Another reason I think its BS is when you mention checking out Korea. Well I'm retired in Korea (lived a total 13+ years) and unless you have tons of money you cannot simply arrive in Korea and retire. Korea does not have affordable retirement visas like PI, Thailand, Bali, etc.; since you pretty much say you don't have the budget for a nice place in PI, you absolutely don't have the funds to retire in Korea (the best you could do without a work or education visa is a tourist visa). So I'm guess you checked out Korea ONLINE and never even looked at the visas for long term stay, otherwise you would have never mentioned it. At best you took a trip to Korea on a tourist visa with zero intention of settling down there or any other foreign country. BTW Japan doesn't have a dedicated retirement visa so really you are left with work visas, professional and sponsored internship, study, etc. and those are limited in term. So yea saying you checked out Korea and Japan doesn't work when you look at the details of their visa systems. So there's that too. With that said, I was able to retire in Korea is because my wife is Korea so we have F4 and F1 visas. But expenses are extremely low compared to where we were in the US. Saving about half what we spent in the US in a paid off apartment (should be noted we are not in Seoul). So yea you can claim what you want but I'm not buying it. Too many inconsistencies, didn't look at expat areas where there are affordable rents with AC, never talk about your retirement visa application process or details, etc. So apparently we disagree but thats ok. You are back in the US and if you are happy there, good on you. @djohn BTW you said that I "don't like our country (US) but you have not problem marrying all the Americans that come other there and coming back to the US with them spending their US military money or the US social security money." Shows that you have no clue as to who I am or how patriotic me and my wife are. BTW my wife is a US citizen. Opps. Also this statement shows how racist you are - so with this statement you just insulted a TON of Filipinos (men and women) who married Americans. Hell you insulted every foreigner who ever married an American. So sorry you feel this way but I'm happy that your racism will die with you when you are gone. The best thing that happened to every foreign country is that you feel this way and decided to go back to the US. As a disabled American veteran with 12 years of overseas service in the US military, you have no clue to how much I love the US or how much my wife loves the US. I'm not made, just really disappointed in what you said because it again shows the real you regardless if you really tried to move and live overseas or not. With that said, good day.

@@theVariedLife I absolutely did go to Korea and checked it out. I’ve been to many countries. You are trying to judge me off of one single video. Good to know how you really feel about foreigners - good thing you decided to go back the US because that mindset is awful. Imagine if you did retire in the Philippines and met with some other American expats who most likely married a Filipina man or women. Kate & John: "Hi My name is Kate and this is my husband John" American married to Filipina: Nice to meet you. My name is Mike and this is my Filipina wife, Maria. Kate & John: Yea we retired here in PI but we believe that all foreigners only marry Americans for the money and social security. IOW they don't marry for love - only white, American born people can marry for love and they never marry for money. American married to Filipina: .... what? Kate & John: Yes both me and my husband believe this. I'm not insulting the filipino people in any way but that's just the facts of it. American married to Filipina: yea... we have to go and btw don't ever contact us again. See that would be really awkward, so yea its best you went back to America. ;) @djohn

The Filipino women have RU-vid channels where they get on here and brag about taking advantage of “white military men” and laughing about it. When I was in the Philippines people would literally stop me in the street and say “are you from America” and when I would say yes they would ask me if I was looking to get married. They asked NOTHING else other than “are you American” you don’t have to tell me nothing man, I EXPERIENCED IT for myself. I’m telling you what a Filipino woman would tell you herself

Well you guys are both super informative. I’ve been to the Philippines and I can’t really argue with anything you said because I certainly experienced a lot of what you talked about. I was only there for 10 days in 2015 but I did venture out of the crowded Cities and get to do some scuba diving and see some beautiful beaches and get to a few places that were not as crowded as Manila. Instead of a Vacation it was more an education and life changing experience. I remember driving thru Manila at sunrise and I’ll never forget the stuff I saw that was just jaw dropping. Entire Family sleeping in the medians or parking lots, little infants wondering up near the busy street alone and naked and begging at all the stop lights. It really moved me and I think about it often. I wanted to help but I was just some guy in a taxi passing thru. Overall the people were friendly to me and most of the time all the businesses like bars, restaurants and hotels all the workers were very professional. I would love to return someday. You're absolutely correct on your assessment of the Philippines. I thought much the same when I first came here 9 years ago. I landed in Mactan late at night and took a taxi to Cebu; there were homeless people sleeping everywhere on the street. Everywhere where you going children begging. Another Old Dog visitor, I have been to many countries including the Philippines. Certainly Manila is a difficult city to travel in, there are nice areas like Makati and BGC. My girlfriend at the time was a nephrologist there and lived quite well. Poverty exists in America, Africa, and America. It’s sad when people have nothing. Sanitation standards in Guatemala, parts of Jamaica, Kenya, Fiji, Thailand and the Philippines are shock to a middle class American. There is good everywhere and the Philippine people are mostly great. Different strokes for different folks. I prefer Bangkok, one of the most modern cities around. But I’m not on a small budget. Thanks for sharing. I've been to the PI many times and met my wife there. I agree with most of your opinions especially if you are talking about major cities. ALL of the Philippines is not that bad, even Manila has BGC which is every bit as nice as the nicest city in the US. Also, it's not 100 degrees everywhere there either. My wife and I stayed in Tagaytay where the temperature was in the 70's and 80's and actually gets chilly some days. Any higher elevation there is quite refreshing just need to get away from the cities. One point that I did not agree with was your grocery store comments. The SM mall grocery stores are identical to the ones in the US with wide aisles and great variety of food, also air conditioning. John is a brave soul to drive a car there which I've never done. We just use the Grab app and let the driving to them. Never had a problem and it's very inexpensive. We stay in Baybay City Leyte when we visit, and it is so beautiful there. Sure, there is some poverty but nowhere near the major cities and the roads and streams were trash free, hardly any traffic, nice restaurants and food vendors barbequing chicken everywhere. Awesome seafood restaurant called the DannMar Venue and Tuna Grill which is one of the best fresh seafood places I've ever eaten. I've never gotten sick there no matter where I've eaten but Thailand almost killed me a few years back. I also have never been scammed in Leyte but many times in Manila. It's a different experience there as well when you have local family to take care of you. I love the Provinces in the Philippines, but I don't think that I could retire there either. Nice place to visit for a month at a time but I'm ready to go home after that.

Been here almost one year and I can agree with each subject matter of this video. However, there are mitigating tactics or hacks for many of the plights mentioned. If you happen to find your dream location in the Philippines you might have to bring your own AC and hot water heater or maybe not. I've learned to keep it moving if I happen to be in an area where the beggars are highly populated. I travel with disinfectant wet wipes when I leave the house! I would also strongly advise from eating foods from anywhere other than your own kitchen; be it you're here or in America! If it doesn't make you sick right away odds are it will kill you years later, (America). Scams here aren't usually laced with the urge to kill you, (America). There are expats here living in newly remodeled or recently built beach/ocean front properties in areas where most of the topics in this video aren't an issue and are doing so for $500-$600 a month for rent vs $3,000-and up in other countries. You get the same ocean side view the same fresh air but at a much lower price. Racial Profiling; as mentioned, yes being a white person puts a bigger target on your wallet, in part due to the high volume of white men that have come here and still come here only to spend their entire retirement savings on the company of a young Filipina. Sometimes, these men end up being one of the homeless you pointed out in this video. Buying land and homes they can never own then being put out on their butts when the well dries up. Imagine coming here of all places and leaving $250.000 lighter behind chasing some tail 😂. This doesn't apply to every expat that comes here and sensibly invests. Also, if you already have an American grown sweetheart, beautiful and intelligent blonde or brunette, I wouldn't bring her here. Even I cringed at first of the things I had to see. The poverty here is on another level. But the people here can change your life and restore your faith in humanity. Here I'm an American expat but when it really matters I'm human.

The government of the city actually do try to help the homeless people or ones displaced when their illegal shacks are demolished. I’ve seen the new structures that are provided but do see the downside. These people are given some cash also to move to these new government built houses. There are a couple of issues in that where these houses are built do not suit many of the people moved there. It seems the government have put these in an area that has little to no job opportunities around that area. So after a period these people move back to the city again. Also there are many professional squatters that are willing to move and take the money and don’t move there but find another area to squat in and get yet more cash to move. I’ve seen these places and agree they are really not in the most desired areas but if the dwelling is free why complain but then again you have to live which is a vicious cycle.

I have returned to America, after a 6-week visit to the Philippines in Sep-Oct 2023. My plan was to retire in the Philippines, that is why I stayed there for 6 weeks. After what I have seen in the Philippines, I am NO longer so sure about retiring there. Here is a short summary why: 1) In the United States, the greater majority of dog-owners "scoop the poop" of their dogs when those dogs defecate on the streets. In the Philippines it is the OPPOSITE. Most Filipinos do NOT "scoop the poop" of their dogs on the streets in Metro-Manila. I had to clean the soles of my shoes 2-3 times a week, because many of the streets were littered with dog feces. 2) Many of the streets in Pasay City were narrow and had NO sidewalk. I was at the mercy of being side-swiped by passing cars and motorcycles, while I tried to avoid the dog feces on the narrow streets. 3) The air pollution in Baguio City and Metro-Manila hit my lungs hard. I developed a cough, while my lungs tried to detoxify from the air pollution. 4) Widespread business fraud, inefficiency and incompetence, in Baguio City and Metro-Manila. 5) Searing heat from the weather. I was wearing shorts and short-sleeve shirts to cope with the heat in Metro-Manila. Still the level of heat was often punishing.

I was culture shock too , that people, white people live on the streets. ( sorry no offense intended) Because in the Philippines , we thought that the US is a rich nation and everyone should be rich. Btw, I’m not saying that being homeless in the US is their choice, most of them has no choice , so they end up living on the street, in their cars. Glad, Finally, someone tells the truth, great negative review😅. This is a wake up call people who think they have a miserable life in the US living on the streets of San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, New York , Las Vegas, Pennsylvania, Oregon.. the big cities where there’s no affordable housing to rent , and sadly the government is blind , didn’t do anything about it. Always, provide bandage solution to the poverty , homelessness problems. Anyway, have u been to India, Bangladesh? It’s another great country to discover. I’ve been there. It’s more fun!😅😅😅

No, but we were warned about India. Our friends just got back & they said it was really bad. We’re in Malaysia now.

@@ThatsSoKeezy You weren’t warned about Manila? You didn’t do due diligence, you didn’t watch vlog about Philippine squatters area in Cebu and Tondo, Manila? You’re talking about Metro Manila squatters areas. Anyhow, what I’ve learned in my travel is not to expect too much. I’ve been to Europe, however, even in the most progressive nations in Europe, there’s always something I can complain about, nothing compared to home, regardless of how poor the Philippines is😅😅. If you dream of a pristine surroundings, go to Switzerland, there- you’ll find what you’re looking for “Clean air, superb view, clean on time transportation , picture perfect. etc. 😅 India is a great experience to have, it’s an eye opening experience for me. I learned how to appreciate little things in life now.

@@rikopersian6407 nope we weren’t warned about Manila. We were actually told “If you want to warm up to the culture slower, stay in Manila” 🤣 so when we landed in Manila we stayed there for a while

@@ThatsSoKeezy You guys must be traumatized 😀. You should have stayed in a 5 star hotel in Makati or BGC . You will be treated like royalty and your experience will be different because 5 star hotels in Philippines has great service, they’ll treat you like royalty 😅😅😅. Unlike in the US , in a five star hotel , you’ll have to haul your own luggage and there’s no one to help out ( if they did, you have to pay per luggage tips) and breakfast is boiled hotdogs, waffles, pancakes and badly cuts fruits. In Manila, 5 star hotel will vast variety of international breakfast , someone will open doors for you and you’ll not see any poverty when you step out of the hotel. Quiet the opposite from 3rd world country service. 😄. Malaysia isn’t bad, especially Singapore.

Statistically, the US has 37.9 million people below the poverty line while the Philippines has 25.24 million. But the Philippines is only slightly larger than the state of Arizona so the poverty is much more spread out across a larger space in the US which makes it less visible. Let’s just continue praying for and working towards a better world for everyone.

Another issue you guys didn't cover was that the Philippines unfortunately suffers from a lot of natural disasters from Earthquakes in the North, major flooding, to major Cat 5 Cyclones. I remember after the last Cat 5 Cyclone that hit the PI, almost all the foreigners left and only returned months and years later after all the repairs were made.

So, if they returned like you said, what compelled them to return? I'm not convinced it's just the exchange rate.

found it comical how at the end the guy says,”Filipinos, we re not trashing your country,” after bashing the the Philipines for 20 minutes with his cohort/fearless leader. The biggest takeaway from life in the Philipines is you will find the most friendliest people in the world doing the best they can. Always a smile. Countless beauty everywhere. I’m often disappointed with my fellow superficial Americans. If these two were starving, which it’s obvious they re not, they would be hustling to eat however possible. Happily stay in the USA and enjoy the gas prices there.

The problem here is you guys went to some of the worst places in the Philippines. I've lived here (Tagaytay Cavite) for over 5 years and I like it. Here in Tagaytay Cavite, the weather is awesome. Its a constant temperature of 75 to 85 degrees all year. I never have to guess what the temperature is before I leave the house. Unlike where I lived in the US, I would stick my head out the door just to see if I needed a jacket😂. The people here are different from the people in those places you guys visited. But a lot of stuff you mentioned about Manila and AC was spot on. We go to Manila only when it's mandatory. We go in, do what we have to do there and get out. But all in all, the Philippines is my final destination. When my time comes to leave this earth, I will be buried in the veterans cemetery at Clark AFB.
