@@yazza5903 Lupita wore a Sisterlocks wig in Us and I thought is was so gorgeous. Had the thought someone should be making wigs like these for the masses.
The real issue is thinning hair at the scalp area due to the weight of the locs as they grow over time. After 12yrs I chose healthy hair over locs. I cut them off. And went to the dermatologist who helped me restore my naturally thick healthy again hair. I do not regret getting the sisterlocs and I don’t regret cutting them off.
I feel like I am going to cut them as soon as they start to feel heavy. Hopefully I can avoid that issue as I know if can definitely happen with long locs. Thank you for sharing!
@@SharidaM They will definitely feel heavy after they are washed or in the summer due to sweating and needing to wash more frequently. Every summer I consider cutting, but I know that is just temporary. I live in the desert so the summers are brutal. But just daily (hair length is down to top of my behind) they do not feel heavy, possibly because I've just gotten used to it as it has grown out. Additionally, since there is no product being put in my hair all the time, there is nothing to weigh it down unless it is wet. Ask people with long hair that is not loc'd, they have the same issue.
I'm sisterlocked about 9 yrs at this point. Everything Sharida said is 100% on point. I'm here after all these years, loving my hair, but tiring of the regular retightening and the time and money it takes due to the length and fact I have very thick hair which means I probably have over 600 locs. I'm not one to do a lot with my hair in regards to color so that was never an issue for me. I love not having to buy a bunch of products for my hair. My hair was and is beautiful. People know what they are at this point so, I never get asked that question anymore. Remember whatever you do to your hair, you are doing it FOR YOU. This is not a committment you take on to please anyone else. I have enjoyed my loc journey, but a 2nd big chop may be coming in 2022. The funny thing is the same folks who didn't want me to loc do not want not me to cut my hair...but again, it is my hair reality, not about their hair dreams. :-) All types of locs are beautiful. Pick what what you love, have time for, and can afford. I think if I do chop and decide to loc again, I would want to learn how to to do something I can completely maintain myself.
My install was 400, 10 years ago with a few inches of hair. My reti now are 30 per hour and it takes 2 hours to do my hair. I had a lot of dandruff prior to my install. I have not had any since. My install was 24 hours. I have 594 sisterlocks. I get my reti every six weeks. I have no sisterlock breakage. I used products to curl my hair. In the beginning I colored my hair before my install and touched up my roots once a month. I did a full color at 1 year. I used a particular shampoo that helped my sisterlocks seal within 6 months. I have no issues educating people about sisterlocks. Do your own research. Don't just listen
I love the look of Sisterlocks, and they were my goal...until I looked into the cost. As a person who has never been a regular patron of salons or purchaser of hair, the maintenance on my loose, natural hair was zero, except for the products. I opted for medium, palm rolled locks that I can maintain myself, and so glad I did...still love the look and versatility of Sisterlocks, but they were too expensive for me.
I'm not sure where you live but I paid $600 for installation and that included my consultation and first retightening. I get my hair retightened every 7 to 8 weeks and its a flat $100. I also learned how to retighten my own hair (the pandemic taught me a lot) but I just love sitting in a chair and having someone else maintain it. My hair is long and very thick so its so much easier to have it done.
@@kellykouyate8690 I would love to know where you live. The cost is what is giving me pause. I've had a stylist quote me a starting price of $1500 for Sisterlocks and that was without a consultation. I didn't even bother because my hair is very dense and I knew the true price would be ridiculous.
Wow. I did pay $600 for installation and my hair was 5 1/2 inches. I get my hair retightened every 7 to 8 weeks and its a flat $100. Best invested I've made and very little managements. The amount of money I was spending to maintain my natural hair or even just getting it braided was crazy.
I tell everyone to take that retie class. For two reason. The first reason is case you need to do it yourself whether for financial reasons or time. The second reason is so you know that a consultant is doing your hair right in case you have to make a change.
I have 11 years in. My installation was 8 hours with 3 consultants and I only had 2 inches of virgin hair and permed ends, but my hair was and still is extremely thick. It took a little over a whole year to fully lock. I started with a standard set, and as my edges and “kitchen “ grew in I now have over a thousand. I have cut my Locs 4 times and have cut off more than 2 feet and still have a lot. I love that this is authentically me and I would take nothing for this journey. It has been and will continue to be wonderful.
@@SharidaM I retighten every 8 weeks, and it takes about 3.5 hours, since the last cut. Before I cut my hair it took at least 5 hours and some Tylenol (tender headed here!)
The only real cheap hair do is natural- wash & go! I’ve been natural and now locd for 11 years. This is great info!! Some days I would love to have my natural back, other days I love my locs! Sistas consider it all !
I was blessed enough that my mom learned about sisterlocs when I was a little kid, so I grew up with them. Cut them off when they were down to my knees and thicker than a mug because I've never experienced my natural hair. So I've never had to pay for locs in my life, and I don't know if I could ever trust anyone other than my mom to loc my hair...definitely going to have her reinstall before she gets too old
The cost alone deterred me. I got microlocs which aren't as small and I plan on self maintaining them. This will be my 2nd set of locs so I feel confident with the self reties. I still love the look of sisterlocs but the way my lifestyle is set up they aren't for me.
I love my sisterlocks. It's the best thing I've ever done to my hair. The only thing I put on my hair is shampoo. I don't use oils or anything and my hair is shiny and thicker. Healthy hair starts from the inside out. ❤
This was a great and very honest analysis of getting sisterlocs. I'm 5 years in and feel like sisterlocs were made just for me...lol!!! The best decision I've ever made for my hair!! But it is definitely not for everyone.
@@SharidaM I have 4c hair. My hair is down the middle of my back. This is the longest my hair has ever been and I love long hair on me. My loose hair was thin but because of the pattern they use my hair appears to be thick and full.
I went to a loctician about sister locs before i started my journey and i cried at the prices she gave. I've been loc'd for 2 years and retwisting my own hair
My retighting was $100 flat rate; usually took her 1.25-.5 hrs. Currently cut mine locs out due to weight and the initial installer made them too small for how fast they grew, 7 years halfway down my back. Looking forward to get them reinstalled! UPDATE (12/22): I'm 4 weeks into my second install! Couldn't wait to get them back! 🥰
I absolutely LOVE this video! I had traditional locs for 7 years, combed them out and was a loose natural for 5 months… never again😂😂 I found a superb consultant and I’m now almost 6 months in with my sisterlocks. Everything this Queen is saying is true! Listen to your consultant. I go every 4 weeks for a retie and I’m out of there within 45mins. My girl is fast and neat! Time is money so research research research before you make the decision. Yeah, the cost can be pricey but you are investing in yourself with your God given crown. We all can agree that we’ve spent money on less productive things😂😂😂 Be blessed Queens🥰
This is a good advice video. I initially wanted sisterlocs, but I had to consider the cost of maintenance and the condition of my scalp. I have small traditional locs and I love them. They are easy to retwist on my own and I can wash them as often as I need to.
Shoot! Back in year 2002, a sisterlock consultant told me, that she would take my whole income tax check, to start my locks and I only had about 2 to 3 inches of hair. At that time, my income tax checks were $2,000. I was, like, whet? $2,000? My hair ain't even that long! She, said, it's not about your length, but that you have alot of hair and it's going to take a super long time to do it. I said, OH!😯Re-tightenings, at that time, were $25.00 per hour, then about 7 to 8 years, later, they went up to $35.00 an hour. I had to pass on it and I'm glad, I did. I would have been, homeless, trying to keep up with the cost. 😂🤣
This! The whole salon yelped out when I told them I was there for a sisterloc consultation because my hair is not only really long, but also thick...long story short, she did the sample sisterloc, then told me both sisterlocs and microlocs would be $5K for my hair. This was yesterday and now I'm just thinking doing a DIY start, or just cutting it off smh
@@NaomiLaBonita I hope you figure it out. Having long thick hair is a battle by itself. I started my thick traditional locs, July 2021 and i love them so much. They are not fully mature, of course, by when they do, I'm going to rock them semi-rasta, sometimes.
@NeziNapps akaNezi it really is!! Did you do yours yourself? I still have a few more consultations lined up for microlocs and interlocs, so hopefully I'll figure something out sooner rather than later. I've cut it all off down to 1in before (5 years ago), it's now 18-24in (my crown is shorter), so chopping it might be what I decide to do. Good luck in your journey; I'm sure your locs are beautiful!!
@@NaomiLaBonita I'm a RU-vidr and post videos about my locs and loose natural hair, if you want to see them, stop by. Yes, I started mine, myself, but later started going to a stylist. She does my retwist for me. I don't feel like doing my hair anymore. I'm over it.
Very good video and your hair is gorgeous! I looked into sisterlocks and was quoted $1700 and 3 days for the install due to my length and thickness. Couldn’t do it but I still think they’re beautiful in other people.
When I began my locs, I started off with brotherlocs (sisterlocs, but for a guy). It was much more inexpensive then, but expensive for the time (this was about 13-15 years ago). Because of my hair type, I stopped going because the process wasn’t right for my hair type. My hair started thinning; one of my friends with finer hair than mine had the same experience. I began palm rolling and my hair thickened and grew. I’m grateful for my locs and my time with them-before cutting them off, they were at the small of my back with regular maintenance on my own. Now, I rock a short, curly platinum blonde look. I appreciate the video!
Been sisterlocked since 2013. Sometimes I regret this whole process but then I think about how much time and money I put into my loose natural hair. I do wish I could maintain my own.
Your locs are gorgeous. I started my journey June 17 2021 and love it so far. The only issue I've had is the dry scalp but I spray with a mixture of water and essential oils and it's fine. Thanks for sharing.
I've had sister locs for 11 years now, and I love them. I've learned to retie them myself. My hair length is below my backside. Everything you said is true about the process. It's not for everyone.
So, i retightened my own locs for 11 years. Then I got TIRED and went back for the first time in a decade…. What a relief. I am not retightening ever again… too old for it, but I still love them.. they are past my butt now.
Wow! I learned so much here. I knew sister locs were fragile, but I had no idea they were this intense . I have standard, pencil sized locs and I know how much my hair tangles as its approaching re-twist time, I couldn't imagine what my hair would do with sister locs!! All my sister locs would loc together ha ha! Your hair is beautiful sis. Thanks for sharing!
Sistah.. thank you for your words of wisdom ❤. The financial commitment is something that I have to consider. I did not realize that the installation could be so expensive along with the frequent reties. I could careless about the different phases and how I look 👀. I’m excited about the changes. I am mad comfortable in my skin, my shape, and my beautiful Black Womanhood. Currently, I’m wearing a mid-size Afro with a little color. I do not change my hair styles often. Thank you again. You are beautiful Sis. Take care, be encouraged, and many blessings to you.
Glad I watched this video. I have a consultation on Friday for sisterlocks. Told my husband I wanted him and showed him possible prices. He said for US, even with reties it would be cheaper because I’m always getting my hair braided and styled and it’s not cheap lol He’s a money pincher and he said that sisterlocks would be great for our budget. 😂😂 Love this video!
This channel came thru my feeds. This is the first video I've ever seen of this channel shout out to the beautiful creator 🥰 But since I'm here I just wanted to share my natural hair story. So I was stressed in 2018 and my hair started falling out. I went from a head of hair to a mini fro within months. It was devastating. At the time I had a friend who rocked a short fade and said go for it. So I did. I cut off all of my hair for two years. I loved it. During year two my hair started growing faster than I could afford to cut it at the barbers so I let it grow. During that time I learned my hair is really dry when left in a fro. So I remembered a friend from highschool who kept her natural hair twisted all the time. And it was down her back. So i twisted mine for awhile and noticed my hair locked in moisture well like that. Then i said hmmmm let me do this same thing with braids. I have a term called intermittent locking in which my hair is in single box braids no weave and I treat them like locs. I wash my hair with them braided everything. My hair is growing by leaps and bounds. Every few months I take them down and refresh moisturize and rebraid. I do it just short of my hair trying to Permanently lock. It has been the best for me. I never heard of sister locs but they are beautiful. However with the way my bank account is set up at the current moment 😭 it's a strong no for me and I have dermititis like baddddd dermititis. But they are simply beautiful and I'm still going to continue to research about them! Thank you Queen.
I had traditional locs I cut them off because I want the sister locs. Thank you for your honesty to help people to rethink and reconsider. I do hate sitting long hours to have my hair done.❤️
I have no idea if you are still active as this is the first video I have watched of yours. I love everything you stated. I decided against Sisterlocks because I did not want to commit to putting my hair schedule in someone else’s control. I installed my microsized locs over 6 years ago, and it was the best decision I have ever made. This specific video provides wonderful perspective about what to consider if you are on the fence about “ to Sisterlock or not to Sisterlock “. I definitely would have appreciated watching this video when I was seeking to educate myself about the process!!! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the input. I am a traveling nurse and I know that I can’t go home every month. I have been in Virginia now since June and haven’t found anyone here that does them. I have been looking into them for about a year, but this video really answered ALL my questions. Thanks and much success in your journey.
Your reties can go from 8 to 10 weeks. The first year every six weeks. Depends on hair growth. My derm and loctician decided that once a month is too much. Get a consultation to work out a schedule for YOUR hair. Once a month is a no no for me, but in the beginning, every 6 wks for sure. Also traveling nurse. Stay safe and I hope you still consider them. They are the greatest!
The cost for my locs were cheaper compared to running to the salon constantly with the new prices they charge, also lace wigs alone is much higher than a once a month $140. To each it’s own but i’ve always spent a lot on my hair bc i switch up a lot.
I don’t want sis locs but I do believe it’s beautiful and found this helpful and educational. Love your hair by the way. My find is getting this. She is tired of haircare products & weaves because it’s breaking her out.
Thank you for sharing that. I was much like your friend, just tired of hair care and I had to give up weaves many years ago. Sisterlocks was the best hair decision for me. I LOVE them!
I am five years in. I just recently got my hair colored n cut. I get mines retighten every 6 weeks. My loc tech takes 2 to 2 1/2 hours to do. I love my Locs. Yes it expensive but actually is not. I would spend hundreds to get my hair done every two weeks. Weaves n hair are not cheap. So, for me this is less of an expense plus my hair was below the middle of my back. Loving it wish I would have done it when I was in my 20’s.
Before reading any comments, I would like to say: Very nicely done!. Being 5 years in, this video is 100% accurate. You touched on all the points in a very professional way with sincere integrity to the brand and us as women of African descent (yes, I'm dating myself! lol!!). Seriously, kudos to you. I hope others are open to receive what you have put in the universe. Blessings, grace, and much love to you!!
Also add if you are Tender Headed beware! I had them years ago and dreaded retightening day. When that tool would brush against my scalp I would cringed 😬. When she separated each lock a few faint tears fell to the ground. My head would be on fire afterwards. I was told to retighten 6-8 weeks. I started maintaining my own. After cutting them off and now years latter I went with the interlocks with less locks to maintain. Yours are beautiful by the way!
Started my micro locs with extensions in November and I love them. The install cost $500 and to maintain (retie every 6 to 8 weeks) $150. I’ve spent money on my hair and this is working for me. I am pretty sure I can retie on my own but waiting before I take over.
OMG I love sister locs, but so happy I chose regular locs, this is my second set, 1st set for 13 years, 2nd set now 7 years, now I’m 60. And take care of them my self. ❤️😊 Thanks for the video👍🏾
TFS! Your Sisterlocs are Beautiful 💞 I initially wanted Sisterlocs but decided on microlocs just because for me the journey didn't and doesn't seem as strict/structured. I'll be 11 months into my microlocs journey and I'm loving it ❤
Thank you so much for this very detailed and informative video!! I have been wanting sisterlocks so badly but after watching this video I now know that they are not for me. 😞 Thanks so much!
I'm coming up on a year and a half with my Sisterlocks, and I'm very happy with them, but agree with you 100%. People considering them should think about these points.
I have about 300 MICRO locs and even the install for that some people charge $800+. I had to go to a few different stylists for quotes. Luckily I paid $500 but you get what you pay for. Hair is gorgeous, locs are gorgeous but I definitely (originally) would’ve liked to have 300-500 locs and I would’ve liked to have very precise parts but I genuinely love my locs. Especially around the time to retie? I already pay $200 for a retie and that takes 2 hours. If I had MORE locs I’d be fucked tbh.
Not for me because I love new looks/hairstyles but these are prob the prettiest sisterlocks I've seen. Great video, so many try this look and don't seem to keep up with the maintenance.
Thanks for the information. Definitely not getting these now. I’m going to have to go back to a relaxer. I don’t have the money for these or patience for natural hair anymore.
I got sisterlocks for spiritual reasons and kept them for 3-4 years. I paid 800 dollars to have them installed and I had about 600 locks. It took between 3 and 8 hours to have my hair tightened every 4 weeks and it cost $40 an hour. I loved them, but 3-4 years later I had locks that stillllll had not locked because my hair is very soft. There are many other things to consider as well, if you want to live in another country or you move to a state where there are next to no sisterlocktitians, you will have to travel just to have your hair done or you will have to tighten it yourself. Furthermore, if you want to get rid of them after they have locked, you will have to cut them off - because of the crochet pattern of the locks, sisterlocks cannot be picked out like traditional locks. I was able to pick out a few of the locks that had not completely locked, but the ones that had locked had to be cut off. Having sisterlocks is a lifestyle.
I had a hairdresser years ago that told me to stop putting grease in my scalp. I followed her directions thinking she was crazy. After 2 months I had no dandruff and healthy hair and scalp. Apple cider vinegar rinse and thats it...and I did not have sisterlocks.
I am very interested in sister locks. I spend so much money on weaves and wigs that I got tired of it and I started braiding again which I love. My hair is long and natural.
Sister locs are gorgeous but I'm not getting done for all these reasons. I remember when my friend started her loc journey and told me she wasn't getting sister locs because they are expensive to maintain. I am also someone with thick hair so I don't think it would work for me. Plus I don't even have the patience so I hurt admire them on other women lol.
This video gives good advice. My sister did my install and reties for a year. Now I'm struggling to keep them retied. I really can't afford to keep it done. And doing it myself is not a option have shoulder issues. I had help last time and here it is time again...
I have 80 locs now and thinking about transitioning to get sister locs where I do not retwist for 9 mo - 1 year then chop off my current locs and get sister locs. I'm more torn after watching this video than before 😅😅 money and time for re-tightenings are big considerations for me BUT....they just look so darn BEAUTIFUL it might all be worth it!
My Daughter Got Them Finally After Constantly Talking About Getting Them. When l Heard The Price And Upkeep l Couldn’t Believe it. It’s Been about 2 years And l Think How Money is Going Literally To Her Head. She is Definitely on This Journey. She loves Them. And Always Kept Her Hair Blonde.
Thank you for this excellent info! I can't stop looking at how gorgeous your locks look! 😊 I've wanted sister locks for years, but I thought that with my very fine and thin hair, it just wouldn't be possible and/or wouldn't look right. I am happy now to see that thin/fine hair is not a barrier for getting sister locks, and I am relieved that I am more informed about the process before I make that leap by watching excellent videos such as this. Thank you so much! 💯
Girl the first reason was enough for me. My natural hair is past waist length. I thought about sister locks 10 years from now. Watching your video has changed my mind. Thank you for the info.
Whew 😅 girl you would need a whole 2 weeks for an installation at that length! Yeah and it would be incredibly expensive to start if you were not willing to cut it.
I think it depends on the hair. My sis locs, granted now mature, done every 6-8 weeks. At the beginning ( 800.00 install in 2006) it was an absolute 6 weeks because of my hair texture. I was also given strict instructions that I followed. It was a very awkward stage in the beginning. I was told by a woman I love that I look straight up ugly. ( we went our seperate ways shortly after) It has been 16 years now. You have to be willing to care for your hair and scalp regularly. Be aware medications can take a toll on your hair and look. I won't change my look for now when I reach about 70 I am considering doing a short fro. But that is 15 years from now.
Some of this is subjective. I've been locked going on 11 years.... my reties started out at every 3-4 weeks but once my locks matured I go every 6-8. I paid $75 and I only pay between $85-95 depending on the consultant I go to because I have two.
I'm happy I decided to do my research before getting sisterlocks. It appears to be high maintenance which I'm not looking for. I'm more on the lazy side. I think I'll opt for small regular locs.
Thank you for this. I don't have your hair texture but I've learnt a lot from your video. It's interesting to know about more various hair care routines/treatments and understand better what people go through with their particular hair type. I have very thick bushy/ wavy asian hair and always sort of petrified of going to mainstream hairdressers who tend to cut for more volume! I find I always get a better service with a Japanese or Korean hair studio.
Once you learn to self retighten “teach” a family member. It’s a time commitment but it’s worth it. As far as medication on your scalp, talk to several SisterLocticians. If a dermatologist says you can use it, the consultant will likely say it’s also ok.
I have 4C hair, got my 520 installed in 2016, had 2 retightenings, but have been retightening my own since... They are now mid back and worry free... Only cost is shampoo and conditioner
Hey, RU-vid Not sure how to do it. But the information Sharida provided in this Video is definitely spot on. Thank you Sharida I'm at 11yrs and counting and I will say I have watched some nice videos on sisterlocs. However, your commentary is 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾. Again, thank you for the info😊
I don’t have sister locs, never thought of them but I watched the whole video! U are so beautiful and even tho I didn’t come for the targeted audience, still love the information!
I agree with a some of what she's saying to consider; however, I've had my sisterlocks since 2014. It was the best decision I've ever made. My retightening is every 8 weeks and my hair sits on my bottom. It's not expensive and I've never been in my loctician's chair more than 1.5 hours (the same amount of time I spent when my hair was natural and it is significantly cheaper). I've never taken the time to bind my hair, EVER. I found the best and most accommodating loctitian to do my install. The only issue I have with locing my hair is that I love it curly and because it's so long it takes a lot of time to roll it for the curl that I want. My hair was brassiere length and my install was half of what was initially quoted to me by going to this loctician. Not long after she moved out of state and I had to find another, she's amazing and I've been with her since. If you want sisterlocks my biggest suggestion is to do your research. You can find a loctician who is reasonably priced and great what she does. Happy sisterlockin!!
hI Sharida, I tune in to Blove, she has sisterlocks. I youtubed sisterlocks and game across your channel. I love the thin locks. I know it's not for me because I just couldn't do all that it takes. Thank you for enlightening me. It is also a cost that I can't afford along with the time. You look beautiful and sisterlocks definitely fit you and Bloveslife.
OMG!!! 😱 I am fan girling. I ADORE YOU and your content! You actually helped me figure out my video equipment set up and inspired me to start my own channel. Tearing up because this is nothing but God 😩.
I'm glad I watch your video. It made me reconsider getting sister locks. I'm inconsistent and lazy. And financially I won't be able to keep up. Thanks for these helpful advices. I love them on you though
Hi I got sister locks and I’m 13 but got them since last year. But it’s puffy and the back is locking faster then the front and it’s honestly really confusing cuz I don’t know what I’m doing wrong and I have really tight coils. I’m a patient person but it’s been a whole year and few months and I’m about to be 14 😭
That sounds normal to me. The teenage phase most people experience puffing and the areas that are more corse lock faster. The locs in the back are locking faster on me too.
@@SharidaM I’m not sure what type of sisterlocks I have but when does it get like yours? When does it like mature? Does it take 2-3 years? Also I love ur hair :)) what type of locks do u have?
@@allisa6010 Thank you! I have small sized Sisterlocks and mine are still babies. They are not anywhere near fully locd. I am only locked 1 year so it will be a few more years before everything is matured. Everyone’s hair looks different at different stages. Just enjoy your journey and be patient 😉
Thank you, this was so amazing and truthful. I really appreciate your explanations. I must share this with my friends and family.🥰 I love this style on almost every Sister I see with it.👍🏽 However, I can honestly say that it may not be for me because I have health issues like back spasms and other health problems so I can't sit long for the installation process🤔. Again, thank you for sharing the facts.😘 May Jehovah continue to bless you for your honesty🙏🏾❤️
This happens if you are constantly in your hair twisting and all I’ve had dreads for years and have no problems with thinning or anything BUT I DO HAIR MYSELF AND KNOW WHAT TO DO
Thanks for this. The people I know that have them, love them but your video confirmed what I was starting to realize from my own research. I cannot make the time commitment
