The guy in the shoe store gave his best and honest price. Bargaining and trying to get them for 250 rupees is just crazy. Even as locals we would not bargain to that low, max would be till 950 rupees. Everyone needs money but he has luxuries that they simply don’t and it just didn’t make sense to bargain with someone who would benefit greatly from receiving that money. Also it was only over $1-$2 so it’s not like it would’ve broke Luke’s pockets, and the local would benefit from it. That $1-$2 makes a big difference for the local.
I got mixed feelings when it comes to this. I've spent some time in the mid east and in Turkey during the 90s and it was absolutely normal (almost expected?) to bargain as it is a cultural thing in some countries. Not sure about Sri Lanka tbh though! :) But I know that many Sri Lankans are shit poor and in that case I also think 1000 wasn't a lot as it's like a few dollars only.

If I come from Germany to visit Sri Lanka and they sell a slipper for Euro 2.50, i would definitely buy it without bargaining, probably will give more. That's more than i can afford it without hurting even my pocket. Life is hard, wouldn't be hard for us to pay the real price for a Euro 2.50 slippe, especially tourists from Western countries. I"m from Germany and whenever i shop in India or further east, i would not try to bargaining as i know they need money too. It certainly wouldn't hurt our pocket either for Euro 2.50. I enjoy viewing your videos since you portray the country in a lovely way. One thing I would recommend is don't insult the locals who are trying to make a living by saying things like "I'll give you 250 and a Coca-Cola Zero." Please do your research on currencies before visiting different countries; don't compare Pakistan to other south Asian countries; Pakistan's cost of living may be more sustainable than Sri Lanka's, and you got a nice deal on those sliders.
