thing is people complain the bands are dead,, well unless there is some kind of a "special event" hey ry tuning in and call "CQ" be amazed what happens!
I'm actually going to be the opposite this field day, I'm not turning my radios on until the field day is over this year. Except for my regular scheduled nets!
I know a guy that does something similar but in horse racing, Whenever there is a triple crown threat he never goes to Belmont which is the last leg and his home town. He says it's amateur's hour and people keep coming up asking how to do this and how to do that. He goes on his regular days to the track. But I guess for HAM it would be Amateur Amateur's day!
Easier to understand, specially when DX'ing or poor band conditions. I don't say November but use norway or zed/zanzibar for zulu etc.. Easier for none native English speakers to say and understand. I do understand what you are saying. I automatically think KW myself.
I heard someone saying "Mike Canadia Whiskey" earlier... Wherever "Canadia" is, it sounds like a whole lot of fun! 🎉 Edit: according to Wikipedia, it's a genus of stem group annelid worms. Perfect choice for phonetic spelling, obviously! 😂
As a strictly armchair psychologist, I often wonder if it is done as compensation for--ahem--lack of a certain "prowess" but we will leave it at that... Part of my job involves speaking with offshore callers on a daily basis and while some are quite good with their alfa-bravo-charlie standard phonetics, some of them are quite amusing, like "Q as in cucumber," "I as in eyeball," "M as in emblem," etc. You get the idea--they're trying their hardest to be understood so it all works out but I smile to myself. 73 DE KØVZ
I've never understood why so many videos of sideband contacts have the target station not tuned properly. Are my ears that far off? Gotta be me, right?
Same with RTTY. It's very rare to get a contact when there's not a contest going on. Made a handful of RTTY contacts on 10, 15 and 20m. When there's a contest going on, seems like everyone is on the air. I believe the ARRL should encourage people to try different modes to have a qso instead of a contest.
I'm in the process of packing for a move. All radio equipment is packed but a HT and my mobile. So no field day for me but I've participated in enough field day events. No loss. Thanks for the vid of field day.
I have noticed since returning to radio these field days and contests really bring out the operators, those days of always finding someone anytime seems to have diminished.Great radio those 940’s,loved mine.
it was like magic...at 2pm est.. it was like the arrl pushed the band switch on... crazy..and at 2:02pm est today.. they will push it to the off postion .. lol
Imagine if they gave away a Brand new HF station for winning the field day contest. If you want to talk to someone after field day, You have to goto 11 meters. They need a field day for All the cbers. So they can be Emergency ready if disater strikes. And they should have a field day for FRS,GMRS,Muirs too
Hello Eric. And yes, as you say on your video, you do a very good analysis on this subject. In France, unfortunately, it's the same but hey, it's up to us retirees (I speak for myself) to be on the frequency. What I do every day. See you soon. 73's. Joel/F8MGW
I rec'd my general ticket in January and participated with my local club in the gota part of Field Day for new hams. I had a blast and made a lot of qsos. Hectic, but fun.
Let me just say at the outset here that I understand where you're coming from. And you just tuning around on 20 meters emphasises the fact that it's busy during Field Day. And yes, when you turn your radio on in 24 hours there won't be a lot of people out there. But your premise at the end of your video where you say that no one is on the air EXCEPT during Field Day? I have to respectfully disagree with you. There are other people on the air during other times of the year; you just have to go and find them. I had someone tell me once that Ham Radio is like a fishing expedition. Sometimes, you throw your line in, and get a fish, and sometimes, you don't. There are probably a lot of reasons why people won't be on the air 24 hours after Field Day. Here are some that I can think of: 1) People are exhausted. They're been up for hours, probably camping, and not sleeping that well. Then, they're concentrating so hard on making those contacts during that 24 hour period, that afterwards, they just don't want anything to do with the radio. I know I certainly feel that way today. 2) People have to work. Unfortunately, I'm still a working stiff, so I had to get up the next moring, and start work. I suspect that a lot of people aren't on the radio 24 hours later because of that. Then, they probably had to drag themselves to work after the week-end. But, keep in mind that after that mad rush of Field Day, I'm sure the love of radio will return, and they'll get on the air again. Besides, do we REALLY want that kind of mayhem on the radio EVERY DAY? It would be like dealing with a traffic jam on the freeways 24-7. No thanks. But, people will get on the air again. And, there will be other operating events which will get people on the air. People will get out to Parks, and Summits, and activate again. People will get on the air, and chase DX again. People will get on the air for their favorite nets again. It's just the usual ebb and flow of life. I'm thinking that you probably might have been speaking a bit 'tounge in cheek' when you said that people will only turn their radios on during FD. I get it. But, here's at least another perspective on it. DE K7RLN
Yes I was speaking that way Because with 29 million views, you can imagine I get a lot of comments daily. I have been accused of using audio from someone else's radio over the top of my video because there is no way I can make contacts at 5 watts. I have been told that mobile is impossible and ALL I DO is mobile, and post short clips of working DX at 100 watts and have been told I'm lying. I have been told 6 Meters has not had a contact since 1987 when they got their license, so how in the world can I possibly make contacts every year especially while mobile. But I am told there is nobody to talk to and ham radio is dead. I'm also SEE that everyone is on the radio during field day, why not a normal weekend.
