For this test I'm running the Seagate Firecuda 540 in the build listed below. I decided to test it in multiple different ways:
1 - In it's standard setup with the motherboard heatsink and sticker
2 - Without the heatsink
3 - Without its stickers but with the heatsink
The results surprised me, with the exception of running it without a heatsink as that just meant it thermally throttled and stopped running as it should have. But removing the stickers didn't make as much difference as I thought it would. For these tests I used Crystal Disk Mark to push the drive to its limits, while also running Cinebench R23 to get the system heat up and HWmonitor to check the temps and performance. I made multiple passes of these tests for each of the variations to be sure I was reaching the limits, though obviously there will be some fluctuation as ambient temps might have changed and you will have to keep in mind that your system setup and environment might be different, but still, I believe it's not worth peeling.

Those stickers are heat spreaders and should not be removed

not entirely accurate, it just so happen that NVMe runs faster at higher temp, suppresing heat will just slow down the speed - IMHO c",?

They can't void the warranty in America if you remove it we as consumers have the right to repair.

Can tell by the size of your drives you don't have "over-provisioning" enabled, you'll get much faster speeds with it enabled.

Most of these stickers are copper adjacent or a cheap metal. They usually trap heat instead of pulling it out. Sabrent is a big lover of metal stickers.

i currently have a crucial p5 2tb in asus tuf gaming x570 plus in the top slot of the two pcie slots, would you recomend a heatsink for this as the mb only comes with a heatsink for the bottom slot and not sure if this will help performance and longevity

Am I okay using an NVME with temps up to 57c under full load? Idles at 39c. That’s with good cooling. I think it just runs warm.
@TheProvokedPrawn

That's fine. The throttling is at about 85 degrees

Cause stickers on nvme are actually heat spreaders, not just stickers
@PokèMyBalls
@PokèMyBalls 11 месяцев назад
Cause what? You realize they only work if you don't have a boards heatsink on top of them. Otherwise it just traps heat and bakes your Nvme.

@@PokèMyBallswouldn't having more surface area be better at dissipating heat?
@PokèMyBalls
@PokèMyBalls 11 месяцев назад
@@maruftim Usually, but not when you have a metal sticker catching heat and not letting it be absorbed by the heatsink. Just creates a barrier to the thermal pads doing their job.

Check your motherboard manual. It differs from board to board model. Some motherboards disables sata ports when all the m.2 slots are populated. Some Pcie gen 5 motherboards which have a dedicated gen 5 m.2 slot shares bandwith with pcie slot. My z790 E gaming will only use 8x lane instead of 16x if i use a gen 5 drive.
@warlockgod66
@warlockgod66 7 месяцев назад
For new viewers this will void your warranty on your m.2 drive removing the heat spreader or thermal pads. At best used a old m.2 drive you no longer need or plan on not using no more cuz most likely it a malfunction after removing the heat spreader over a month to three months no point in wasting money or Gen 5 or 4 cuz the cost is still extremely high when you get a 2 TB or more

I would keep off the heatsink if I got 44 thousand megabytes per second, throttling or not 😂
