Tonight on Primetime: Unpacking the Mystique of Vintage Guitars. We’ve all heard the idea that old, classic guitars sound better than anything being made today at some point. But where did that come from, and why do so many players believe it? And if old guitars do sound different, why is that?
Join us tonight at 6:00 PM Pacific time on RU-vid for a discussion with Taylor guitar expert and pro player Terry Myers, who takes us through the origins of the idea that vintage guitars are superior to their newer counterparts and gives us a verdict on the question.

Bob once told me that it takes every guitar five years to realize it's not a tree. Thanks for the great historical schooling

Great show boys! All my Taylors are from the 1990s, originally purchased by me. 612 is my favorite--I have two 612-C Taylors, one from 1996 and one from 1998. They are incredible and getting better every year. Thank you for these glorious instruments!

I am guitar challenged...one guitar for twenty years...Taylor 310 Sapale/Spruce It was always a good sounding guitar but really opened up after later it its life..probably around 15 years. Was always a bit bright...but mellowed out to become a beautiful sounding guitar. It is a big sound so I have to be careful when playing with others. I play without a pick which softens the guitar. Will always be my friend, Thanks to Taylor

These shows are great. My 317 e, 1st year model, has sweetened so much over these last few short years. Oddly, maybe, I pick my electric guitars by playing them in a quiet area not plugged in. If I like the tone of the wood and the neck feel, it goes home. Plugged in, they are excellent.

I am a mahogany guy. I only have about 8 guitars that I often play, 2 are are rosewood. (Probably about 20?, but I don't count theme. I liked all but 😮last and first the most. I graduated high school in 74. I have not yet found a Taylor that screams 'take me home'...but I remain open minded. Y'all are great!

I've had this discussion many times. I have a handful of Custom Shop reissue guitars... a '56 Hardtail Strat, a '66 Strat a '59 ES-355 and a '63 SG Jr. Compared to an old one, *IF* I can find one. *IF* it's available. *IF* I can afford it. Will it play as well and sound as good as the new Custom Shop? Will the old ones be as good as a regular production reissue? Maybe, but probably not in most cases.

Taylor AD27e mahogany top is going to be a huge Taylor collectable guitar in 25 years. I have played over a hundred Taylors and own some very historic Taylors and that guitar will be magic in the future and is amazing now.

How do the new sustainable components compared to older components? Ebony fretboard compared to Eucalyptus for an example

It's pretty hard to tell on just the strumming if one sounds "better" or not, but for me, in my experience, at least on the fingerpicking, you can definitely hear a sweetness in the sound of the older ones, that is very hard to get in a new guitar, unless you get a really well done Torrified top, that helps . But of course, I don't understand the overpricing of the vintage guitars... just because they're sought after I guess ... But, I prefer buying used ones that have been already broken in by time and playing. I've got an AD17 brand new about 2 years ago, and only this week I was just amazed by the opening of this guitar ... in the beginning it sounded kind of sterile and without much life. As time passed by, oh man, that thing sings, developed a ton of bass and just wonderful to play on.

The people who enjoyed listening to a Taylor and desiring one, can now afford one...and for fever dollars often.

My 2015 618e with the amazing brown sugar stain sounds better to me now then new. I’ll just leave that there, it’s over 6 minutes in and the conversation is about jets falling apart, so I’m moving on. Take care.
