My Moto 360 is collecting dust...
Android Wear, Apple Watch, watchOS, Pebble are all competing for the best smartwatch of 2016, but sales aren't amazing.
So, do people still buy smartwatches?
Fun note: After I posted this video, Pebble shut down.

And here I am still wearing my Pebble Steel. And my Kickstarter Edition Pebble is still going well. Such a pitty that Pebble went bust. A week's battery, simple design and simple interface. Still think Watch first, everything else second. But that's just what I think.

I just could live with eveything considered a problem about smartwatches but the price is too big for me,if it was 125-150$ a watch then it would be perfect.

Smart watches should be standalone devices instead of depending on phones for everything....

I know right? What's the point of having one if I have to have my phone nearby to actually use it? That defeats the purpose. Not to mention that Bluetooth drains the battery.
@mightza3781
@mightza3781 7 лет назад
It also doesn't help that they cost as much as the phone it is tethered to. Besides, the original wrist watches were just pocket watches strapped to a soldier's arm so he didn't need to drop what he was carrying to tell the time during WW1. Once cell phones could tell time, watches devolved into jewelry and watch wearers became a minority, especially among young people.

I have just bought the Apple Watch Nike+ and I really like. I use it mostly for sports tracking (I am a triathlete) and contactless payments. I wish more smartwatches included NFC, decent HR sensors, and waterproofing, because those are the only things keeping me glued to my Apple Watch.

I still use my og Moto 360 for fitness tracking, music controls when I run and texting at work. There's an app that makes your phone like a bore scope which is very useful. Checking notifications on your watch saves you from having to pull your phone out every two seconds.
@AdrianCavanagh
@AdrianCavanagh 7 лет назад
I think it's a total shame Pebble shutdown. A's you said in the video, charging a device everyday to get notifications on your wrist gets old really quick, especially with all the swiping involved with a touchscreen. Pebble had this right in that the battery lasts a week and you can actually dismiss/delete a notification much quicker with the buttons, barely even have to look at it. But it doesn't look as flashy as the bigger players, lack of funds have brought it to an end.

I've got a Pebble Time which I love. I mainly use it to display notifications from my phone but I only have to charge this about twice a week so it's a lot more convenient than the Moto360 that you showed. That's really key for me in smartwatches: They have to be at least as convenient as a regular watch would be, so the battery-sucking, water-permeable, flick-to-display designs that most companies are putting out are complete deal-breakers to me. It really sucks that Pebble's gone out of business, since they were the only ones that made smartwatches that were actually good.

I use my Pebble 2 every day for the notifications and ability to voice-to-text back. I have an LG V10 with an Otterbox case, so it's annoying to get that brick out and check it constantly. Hope it doesn't lose that functionality anytime soon... 7-8 day battery life is very important to me. I wouldn't use a watch that I have to charge every day or two.

I use my 1st gen Moto 360 (same as yours in the video) with a steel band almost daily, but it's starting to get slow and is pretty scratched up so I'm thinking about getting a pebble round, mainly since it's round and has basically the same functions, with supposedly more juice and cheaper than a 2nd gen 360. I'm more interested in functionality and how it helps my routine, rather than having features that are useless to me, like the heart rate sensor, since I don't exercise that much and doing it with a steel band wouldn't make any sense hahaha

Sad about Pebble. Your watch looks great on you though so thats a plus! I have an apple watch and Ive worn it every day since I got it a couple weeks ago. Im not even that techie but I still like it. The technology is great, I like not having to get my phone out to check the time or small notifications, I text quite a bit on it, I use it to track fitness and actually as my speedometer in my car because my gauge is broken and its a lot safer to look at my watch on my wrist instead of down at my phone for the speed. I think I will stick with it, and keep wearing it. I foresee smart watches becoming less bulky and more integrated. I personally think that we will be able to opt out of even carrying smart phones as bluetooth earphones become smaller and smartwatch technology moves to independency of the phone for cell and internet service.

i haven't bought a smart watch yet due to the inconsistent battery life after a few months of use that plagues most of the smartwatches i would also prefer a cheaper data plan for smartwatches although i think the software is very nice and smooth transitions make it a very appealing item

I'd buy one, but I can't find one that does everything I want from one. They all seem to be just an addon to phones and the ones that aren't are like super low quality. I hope this changes in the future. I would really like to get one. Especially when smartglasses become a thing. In the mean time, I have a U8, which is pretty fine though.

Nice analysis, i personally opted for a fitbit charge hr 2, it's more dicrete than a smartwatch and It has an actual function if you are trying to reach a fitness goal, which i am. For me smartwatches lack in real function and in a time like this your better giustify 300+ dollars for a Toy. If only smartwatches start to have SERIOUS health a fitness target they Will sell like Candy, but we are not there quote yet.

The biggest question I would ask is if you were wearing any sort of watch prior to a smart watch. If the answer is no than you prob just wore the smart watch because it's the new hip thing vs a product adding more functionality to your existing lifestyle

I wear a watch every now and then, usually during occasion though. In regard to that last part, hoping it would do both.
@russ1572
@russ1572 7 лет назад
Austin Nwachukwu then I would say that a smart watch would have minimal value to you , at least while the tech requires it to be tethered to a smartphone. However if you're a regular watch wearer then smart watches add value to what you'd be already using. Just my thoughts though

I use my Pebble Time every day. It's a great watch, and the notifications are keen. I am a Watch person though. I have a bunch of regular watches, so it makes sense that I would get a smart watch. For people that aren't super into tech, or don't use a watch at all, a smart watch is not a good purchase. Looking forward to getting a Samsung gear 3 to to possibly becoming my new daily watch. If the cash becomes available and I catch a good deal, then I will add the Apple Watch series 2 in there as well.

@IsraelCube
@IsraelCube 7 лет назад
ReignbowBrite00 I'm basically the same thing. I have a bunch of regular watches and I used to wear a regular watch 24/7 until I got my first Smartwatch, the Apple Watch. I don't use my Apple Watch anymore since I got my Pebble Time after it started selling last year. I'm super sad to see Pebble go but me and a friend decided to build our own Smartwatch to see what we can do with a Arduino Board Mini and a Display that is the same kind as the Pebble Classic(black and white Sharp LCD Memory E-Paper Display) but with less pixels. It's more of a experiment for me and him but I guess if it works and works well we might sell it(and I am like 99% sure it won't sell and I will get zero profit as it would be a Pebble Classic that's slightly bigger and with a dumber OS(it's Arduino after all and not a custom Logic Board like Pebble).
@ReignbowBrite00
@ReignbowBrite00 7 лет назад
Marc Lowenthal go for it! I'm really upset that Pebble is gone and out watches won't get any more updates or support. It sucks they couldn't figure things out in the business end. Who knows, if you and your friend can figure out something cool maybe kickstarter will be an option for you?

I wear a Fitbit flex now but I'm a watch guy and I need the notifications to keep up with work. I'm probably getting Fitbit Blaze but I'm waiting for CES just in case. Either way I'm probably not leaving Fitbit because I love their app and their the only player with good battery life at a reasonable price point. #rippebble I did have a Pebble Time 2 preorder but we know what happened there.
