DO'S AND DON'TS - LEARNING TO KICK WITHOUT MARTIAL ARTS BACKGROUND

Like 20 years ago when tricking was just being born most people doing it were martial artist. These days most people doing tricking don't have a martial arts background and it really shows. Instead of the focus being on kicks and supplementing them with twists and flips it's vice versa. Kicking is not easy to learn properly without years of work on the basics. It's possible though. In this video I try to give my best tips on how I learned to do it and what I was able to learn on my journey.

My priorities in tricking:
Clean style, versatility, safety, enjoyment.
What I'm aiming to do:
Create educational content, make tricking accessible to everyone, inspire.

I only do my static stretches 3 times a week, because i do notice they ruin my knees and the joint between the hips and thigh, making it hard to do warm up kicks and actually practicing tricks, but i can’t seem to find anything in the internet related to where my leg stretches can be harmful. So I’m really glad to know now that for sure static stretches don’t necessarily help.
@johzuke1
@johzuke1 3 года назад
Don't worry man I have had exactly the same issue with the hip joints after static stretching. That's just one more reason to not overdo them.

@johzuke1

It's not gonna guarantee good kicks for sure. If splits are the goal train the splits but if the goal is to have the most powerful kicks, splits are not gonna be the most important thing to concider.

I'm a martial artist from India and I have gymnastics background too, I have trained c540,c720 and btwist kicks too c1080 is my ultimate goal but a couple of years back I injured my right knee cartilage and couldn't do practice for 2 years and am slowly starting now and your videos and the details you have in your tricks are mesmerizing me, thanks for inspiring me to come back again to my sport , pls let me know your list of injuries and age too😅 😅

This comment is copied from my video "MY TRICKING PROGRESSION 2011-2020": "Through my journey I have had to adjust my tricking style according to the situation. My list of injuries is huge: 1. Knee hyper-extension (in 2011 and 2014) 2. Ankle injuries (left in 2013, right in 2017) 3. Hamstring injuries (2013) 4. Nerve injury in my shoulder (2013 and 2017) 5. Hip-flexor injury in total 3 times (2013, 2015, 2016) 6. Heel injury (2014) 7. Shin splints for 1 year straight (2014) 8. Torn ACL (2016) and torn meniscus (2016 and 2019) 9. Ball of foot injury (2018-2019)" Still, I have never given up on being a tricker. Instead I have made adjustments in my training style and kept going. I just love tricking too much!" So many injuries but not any recently.

Static stretching is a ALWAYS SAFE when you do it LAST. The reduced muscle tone will NOT last past a good sleep. The habit of arranging sessions with long held static holds FOLLOWED BY some HIIT work is crazy and will definitely be what injured you. Lots of great content here thanks, just be carefulw with blanket statements that are only half true.

Thank you for sharing. ❤️ We have very similar views on the topic. Even the basic kicks, like 540, are quite hard! It makes sense because only black belts used to do them at first... Nowadays my students learn fulls and even corks before being able to 540. Not that we don't work on it. It just takes more time for the body to adopt to this stress (jump + kick + land on the same leg). How would you say a jacknife compares in difficulty/complexity to cork variations? Is it on the same level as cork or closer to double cork in your opinion?
@johzuke1
@johzuke1 3 года назад
Glad to see this! 😊 Man I think corks and flips in general are way easier to learn than some of the "basic" tricking kicks especially for children without a kicking background. Comparing jacknife to dub cork is not really possible haha. It's way too different and when it comes to many kicks doing them badly is easy and doing them well is super hard. For me jacknife and J-step boxcutter are pretty much same effort.

@@johzuke1 Good point, thanks for the input! Barely doing something vs doing it well is a world of difference in terms of effort required.

in terms of working out, What is the best method and the most effective way to condition or workout for tricking? Static holds or repetions of various exercises
@johzuke1
@johzuke1 3 года назад
I would say that there is no one good method. Anything that support one's style of tricking and adresses the weak links one has. I might make a video on this topic one day because it has not been adresses properly by anyone at least to my knowledge.
