When we were designing our kitchen, we had rich dark cabinets and soft mid-tone green granite countertops (Costa Esmeralda). I found the perfect glass tile to use as the backsplash, with tan, pale aqua, deep blue, soft green. It was the aha moment for me.
We are remodeling our kitchen, yet we don't want to have to change out the backsplash because my husband worked so hard to put it in about 8 years ago. I like the look of it but not sure how it's going to look with new cabinets and countertop. Is it still possible to put in new cabinets and countertops and leave the backsplash? It is a light colored brick backsplash
Well nothing is impossible but backsplashes are one of the last things installed in a kitchen. And they are usually installed very tight to countertops and cabinets, etc. So installing new components in and around the backsplash might be a bit of a challenge. I'm not sure I would venture down that path. But if you're equal parts meticulous and lucky... it may just work out?! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you! Thanks for watching!
Right now I have Formica backsplash that I don't like and want to change. I'm on a budget and not sure what to go with and want to try and do the work myself. Fortunately, I have a small kitchen to learn this DIY. Any tips?
I’m curious what your thoughts are on this situation. My cabinets are an off white mainly because the have a slight glaze on them. The island is cherry. I want to put beveled subway along the backsplash and all the way to a 10 ft ceiling above the stove. We will add a stainless range hood. My question is about color. White tiles make the cabinets look dingy. The cream colors are a tiny bit too cream. I don’t want a color because I’m going for a timeless look. Should I go with the cream even though they aren’t a perfect match? They do go nicely with the granite counters they are a fairly neutral giallo ornamental. I think they are a bit busy, the classic subway with the beveling seems to compliment the them.
Thank you for the inputs. Do you have an advise for cottage/ themed house. We have small kitchen with white walls and white cabinet. We would like to know what colour splashback should we go with. We are planning to put a white quartz stone as benchtop with some grey abstracts on it. We wanted to know if we can use the same stone as our splashback
Recently found your channel. You present design concepts in a simple and straightforward manner. This channel needs more subscribers !! Got a question about Wardrobes in the bedroom. : Got a ceiling height of 10 feet. In other rooms I have 7 feet wardrobe and then a 3 feet loft both of them have separate doors one over the other. I want a seamless and minimal look. Should I join both the doors to for a 10 feet door which would look elegant and imposing when we open? The other issue would be how to hide the loft space (since stuff there would be unsightly) when this full height door opens?
Hello Design Chickee, I have a kitchen backsplash design question. I live in the cutest 576 sq ft condo. It’s got beautiful vaulted wood ceilings and the main room is the only room besides the bathroom & extra closet. My kitchen is 89” across and it’s on one wall. I’m designing it with a farmhouse theme with a few modern aspects. I intend to get white shaker front wood cabinets, black textured granite and a small farmhouse sink. The Big Chill will release an under counter fridge with a freezer and if it’s right I’m going to purchase one in turquoise. I would like to blend all the colors together in the backsplash. So maybe white tile with a touch of turquoise & maybe black grout or some version of this. My question is since the backsplash is not very large is it best to stick with a small tile or a med-large one for the backsplash? I also intend to add a kitchen island that’s white with a butcher block top. An island that’s movable not stationary but not the full length of the kitchen and it will seat two.
I am redoing my kitchen. Our countertops are granite darker brown/blacks. I wanted to change to white cabinets on the uppers and navy on the bottoms and island. Our appliances are black. So now I am really worried that white and blue cabinets with black appliances and a dark counter top will be to busy. We have a pretty large kitchen and redoing the countertops and appliances is out. We are also redoing the tile floors to a much lighter color. I wanted to have a very pretty backsplash, but now think a marble herringbone that is very muted would be a better choice. I really want to make it lighter and more current. Just need your opinion.
I may do a slab but my countertop has a very subtle design and not sure if it will even look that great, may be too minimal and formal, and too $$$$. I probably prefer subway tile but am trying to assess if it's more important for it to match the countertop (leaning that way so it's as seamless as possible) or the cabinets. Also, if the countertop is honed, should the subway tile also be a matte finish or will everything look too flat. Should there instead be a glossy subway tile to give some shine somewhere? Thanks for your thoughts.
Great video!! I am remodeling my kitchen layout. I have a question about my window size. How big is too big? I have 88 inches between the upper cabinets and designing a 44" x 72" picture window with 4" wood trim and 4" back splash around the window trim. Should I make the window smaller with more back splash or try to maximize the wall space for a larger window?
Great points! Tying everything together is the biggest challenge. I plan to paint cute birdhouses and butterflies on upper cabinets in my 1940 church turned country home. Bases will be forest green. Salvaging the clear fir floors we hope. Any ideas for backsplash that doesn't want to be a focal point??? Inexpensive and easy to clean is also important.
I worry about too many patterns. We are planning dark walnut butcherblock counters. All stainless appliances and sink, haven't decided on cabinet color and we have a very narrow, about 8 inch space between each of 3 windows that make up our bay window area that we plan to keep an exposed brick. Bead board and crown on soffit over cupboards. I'm so nervous about another pattern on the backsplash.
I have a white 4 x 12 subway tile backsplash in my kitchen. I want to add more tile above the kitchen cabinets and to the left adjacent wall. Should I "try" and match the tile or maybe add a textured white version of the 4 x 12? Thoughts? Thanks!
Hello, I am remodeling kitchen. I have kraftmaid cabinets color is Canvas, I picked quartz countertops in Lusso. I want subway tiles for backsplash but not sure if I should get white or biscuit color tile? My floor will be travertine lvt. Not sure what color to paint walls either? What do you think. Love watching your channel. Thanks
When the cabinet and countertop end at different points, should the backsplash end at the cabinet or countertop? Also, when the cabinets end at a wall, should the backsplash end at the wall or wrap around the inside corner wall. If so, does that end at the cabinet (12 inches) or go all the way to the countertop?
Super helpful video! I have a design dilemma. We’re building a custom home, currently in the rough electric stage. Our kitchen has 12ft. ceilings. Our plans call for very minimal cabinets. I am not a fan of all the dead space above them. Do you have any videos on how to creat a grand 12ft ceiling kitchen, without breaking the bank with double stacked cabinets through out? Thank you!
Hello, what do you think about geometric patterns, floral, or other wallpaper for backsplashes? I have seen some with wallpaper and then some sort of glass or protective covering and I thought this looked really neat. But is it practical? Do you know how something like this would hold up to heat and steam and other environmental stressors of the kitchen? Thanks
Hi! Great video! Thank you! I have light gray painted wood cabinets, white quartz countertops with light gray specs in it, and I want to pick subway tiles for the backsplash on two walls in my kitchen. I want it to be easy to keep clean and fresh. I love glass tiles, but would be ok with something else if recommended. What color tile would work best? Gray? Lighter, darker, or the same shade as the cabinets?? White? Or add a bit of a color I like such as a shade of green? What thoughts can you share we me?
What colors would you recommend for a back splash for black counters and white cabinets? In a farmhouse? would the small marble herring bone that you referenced work?
Hello, from the Caribbean. Just found your channel. Really loving it. I love your simplicity to educating your viewers......unto to the topic I have butcher block as my countertop. My challenge is finding a backsplash....would love to hear your thoughts
Hi, how do I design my backsplash without cabinets. I want subway tile with a pop of color. My cabinets are blue pantry style for back wall. My kitchen is L shape and open concept. Hood “36”. Range “36”. Each side is different length , so I cannot do a uniform square. What do you suggest? I am at my wits end😬. Also should I go all the way to the ceiling? Should I go all the way on both sides even though it will not be cemetric on each side?
Do you have any ideas for using a ceramic tile border around the perimeter of a room that gets a lot of direct sunlight? The existing floor is a luxury vinyl tile product made to look like hardwood. Thank you!
The video I needed 😁 I have a small dilemma, I will be installing an L shape kitchen on side has upper cabinets and not the other side. Will it be weird if the backsplash don't have the same height ?
Hi, I’m a new subscriber greatly enjoyed your video, I just have question we had our cabinets built in espresso coffee and got a granite for counter top , but not really sure what type of backsplash ,I hear some utubers say that subway tile is out I also worry about the grout lines , do you recommend the subway tiles or what is your input ?
I’m stuck on a transition backsplash! My existing granite is Columbia Juperano which has veins of cinnamon, gray and black. Cabinets are white. I was considering tumbled marble but not sure it’s the best choice. Do you have advice on options for this situation?
I have an amerello ornamental granite counter top and beige white cabinets.. what type of backsplash should i consider. I bought a silver travertine natural stone 6x6. I am looking for a classic traditional look, I'm afraid it will not flow together the granite I have has some grey, black,,, yellow, beige. What do you think?
Thanks for your useful info on backslashes. I know this is off topic, but I'm drawn to the two wallpaper samples in the background (or is that fabric). Do you have recommendations for wallpapering a focal wall in living room or entrance way. And how to find that perfect wallpaper. Are all the great wallpapers found only through designers? Thanks so much for your inspiring channel.
Hi Annie... thanks for watching. Those two in the background are fabrics but they're from a mill called Thibault and they make some of their fabric prints as wallpaper as well. Check them out online. They are one of my faves. I'll add the topic of wallpaper advice to my list of videos so stay tuned. It's a great topic! And thanks for watching and commenting!
I have a good question. This is bothering me so much! Our home is being built, we chose the standard backsplash which has the backsplash going up only 6 inches but behind the stove, it goes up all the way. What we want to know is what can we put on each side of the stove that will not look out of place with behind the stove going all the way up to the cabinets. Our countertops and backsplash are granite the color is called blizzard. The cabinets are extra tall and deep gray and the floors will be gray vinyl planks. PLEASE HELP WITH IDEAS. Thank you!
Hi dear.. First I want to say thank you for your amazing channel.. I am building a house that already have stome wall including in the bathrooms now I cant decide what tiles I should use I was thinking subway tiles but since I have 5 bathrooms I don't want to be to repetitive I liked to hire a interior designer but infortunatly the budget is already tight and I am single paying for everything ... I know any rong decision will cost me can you please help me
Hi Fatima... I have a Patreon page where I can offer monthly consultations if you're interested. Check out all the details at www.patreon.com/designchickee :) Thank you for watching.
Curious about your take of using a MIRROR blacksplash (preferably as a single, large piece and not tiled). I'm considering that option for installation.
My worry for a kitchen backsplash is that mirrors reflect what's in front of them.. so if you have lots of "stuff" on your kitchen counters it may look cluttered or busy or packed of "stuff". If you've got very little on your countertops... then it might be a good solution and easy to clean (though, not so easy to keep clean). Hope this helps!
Was thinking of back painting glass for a backsplash....to make it extra glossy but not tile. I am looking for a non white kitchen....just for me. Is there a computer program or an app that can let me see what my existing kitchen (a 1955 GE Steel) would be with different colors. Right now it is pink....love it but want a change. I refinished it in 2001 using Rustoleum....has held up well. But can afford to have it done professionally this time.
I'm trying to save the cabinetry in our untouched mid-century since the wood (they are red gum) can no longer be harvested. I'm going with a very light blue gray crackle porcelain tile for the backsplash, which looks amazing and an original Nelson sputnik design wallpaper. I've opted for white appliances and quartz countertops with the Carrera marble look. My issue is translating the broken sliding doors on the bottom to something usable. Would love your thoughts on "translating" old sliding cabinet doors into hinged doors that would keep the character of the home.
I have a stainless steel kitchen with golden countertop, upper cabinets are in royal blue colour, can you please let me know which colour should I consider for back splash. Thank you
I have a backsplash issue that is hard to solve. I have white shaker kitchen cabinets with a white ish quartz countertop. It has very lite black veining in it. Above the countertop is open walnut shelving held up by black metal brackets. Do you have any suggestions
My counter is a few inches longer than my cabinets are on the continuing wall into the dining area. How do I install a black splash when the vertical line is not the same. Hope I am making sense. Lol. Thank you!
Thank you for the great ideas! We have Chantilly lace white walls with grey modern cabinets that go to the ceiling and really would like to get your opinion on the perfect backsplash. I was thinking to do something that will frame the window that looks out to our pool area and side yard. How can I send you a snapshot of the space? Please and thank you.
I would love a turquoise/white (Tile Bar Hex Art) pattern backsplash but my countertops are black (White cabinets), should I replace my countertops to a white? Help! xo
This is a very instructive and interesting lesson on backsplash options. Thank you. Any ideas on vinyl? I rent a mobile home and need to keep any backsplash I install lightweight, simple, and neutral.
No, but I've also not been able check out hardware store! I don't mind keeping the heavy-duty washable paint - mobile homes tend to be rather flexible and their walls are thin, so that really limits any choices used in them. But I sure do appreciate you checking back!
I am in the process of changing out my kitchen backsplash and I am having trouble figuring out the best route to go. I enjoyed your video and would appreciate your advice. I have a traditional kitchen with wine colored cabinets with black granite counter tops. I feel I need to stay with something simple and light in color. I am looking at a couple options: beige beveled subway tile (ceramic) or Beige stone subway tile. Should I consider other colors or other styles? The tile would be on 3 walls of my kitchen. Thanks in advance!!
Hey Carol... I'm loving the idea of wine colored cabinets!!! And I agree... lighter would be best. Honestly, both options sound great. I think the subway will be a bit more casual and the stone will be a bit more sophisticated. So pick the one you think your kitchen feels like. Hope this helps!
@@Designchickee Hi there, love the video! Would it look ok to do extend simple marble like quartz backplash on one wall of L under upper cabs and range hood, and and then do subway tile backsplash on the more open sink wall with possible only one upper?
For smaller living dining and open kitchen what kind of marble flooring, sizes and colours goes best to make it look bigger ... For bedroom also if I want wood in floor which shades goes best and give bigger look to the smaller bedroom
I am installing a one piece fireplace and tv box on my family room wall. Can I paint the whole room along with the box white and if so what color. BM white should I use ? The wall is not great and right now the color is like a cameo white which has yellow hue, so can I just paint the box wall white ? The room is rectangular with mostly wall to wall window on one side . Thank you
Hi totally agree with all you said was wondering would you like to help me out on what colour I should choose for my kitchen island to be sure I was thinking of white
this video is very helpful in choosing backsplash.guide me our kitchen lower cabinets are light wooden texture and countertop is black marble upper cabinets are white what will be our back splash colours should be?
I am looking for a easy to clean backsplash. Do not want grease getting in between grout and building up. Want something that I can wipe clean. What are my options ?
I'm trying to re-do my fireplace to bring it from traditional/colonial to mid-century modern. I need suggestions for tile and mantle. The wall is 6' w X 8" tall. Would love to see some ideas!
designchickee it’s truly amzing that a piece of stone can completely change the energy of a room. I recently want to renovate my ugly kitchen and came through this great channel. Good videos! Please make more! :)
I am remodeling my kitchen I have a basket weave pattern picked out for backsplash and then topped with a 5/8 x 2 black tile. I want to paint about 15- 20 of the small tile a yellow-gold color what kind of paint should I use to paint and gloss...thank you.
Hi,Iam from India.Iam constructing my new home now.My dream is to have a kitchen with countertop and cabinets in white colour. To this what colour suits as backsplash.?
New subscriber to your channel. Great video and content. It gave me alot to think about and consider when picking a backsplash!! Keep up the great content!! Gigi 🙂😊
What color would you paint wood paneling that's in the family room? I like to keep the ceiling beams the beautiful brown color (in contrast w the ceiling white)...but I want to brighten the room up. The room currently has carpet
Hi, How would you put a backsplash on a kitchen that is parallel? One side is without cookingsupplies, but with storage and doesn't cover the whole room. Thank you
I live in a condo townhouse. I am in the unit next to the end unit. I dont have any windows in my bathrooms, nor in my dining room. How would I use mirrors or something to brighten it up without just using white?
Hi , love your Chanel. I’m trying to chose the right tiles for the backsplash of my kitchen but not sure how to chose them because the cabinet are gloss white ,the worktop is black and the floor is Matt black tiles too so go for the traditional metro tiles will be to plain . How can I choose the right tile to give Modern look to the kitchen with been to plain ? As I want to make it the focus point , is an L shape open plan kitchen .Thanks Cristina
Great video and advise! Do you have a suggestion for how to make more modern, bright and clean a U shape kitchen with black galaxy countertop, inset cabinets which I will be painting white? Also : what is the best way to finish a backsplash if the cabinets above the island do not reach the end of the island? Thanks!
Hi there... sorry for the delay in responding. Not sure why I didn't see this until now!? Backsplash tile should go to the end of the countertop and then use a simple tile edge or a finishing tile to square off the area under the cabinets. The key is the backsplash should always be the same length as your countertop. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching. :)
Thank you for the information. We're installing a new kitchen, at one stage I wanted black cabinets, tops and backsplash tiles so I ordered a shiny black mosaic tile that is in a leaf shape. Since then we've decided we're probably going to sell so most likely a black kitchen might not be in a potential buyer's taste? I'm probably going to paint cabinets in an off white / cream / grey colour with solid wood tops. Would you recommend I just go with a completely different tile / use the black as feature behind stove and black chimney extractor / use the black throughout kitchen. The main kitchen is in an l-shape with sides closed off by fridge one side and large grocery cupboard on other end. On the one hand I'm wondering if I should paint cupboards in a darker grey with the wood tops and black tile? If we only use as feature how would we tie it into another tile especially due to shape?
I am in process of having off white distressed paint over my oak cabinets. Also plan to have walnut on the counter tops and island areas. Is that too much walnut or should I just do the island in walnut? (presently all counter tops are laminate). The back splash is where I am struggling to bring cabs & walnut together.
I removed a wall in my kitchen separating my basement steps and I planned to put a counter in its place. if I added cabinets with a countertop I would not be able to extend the trim for the kitchen doorway to the floor. Any suggestions? And if I do it on one side I would probably do it on the other as well.
Great video great advice! I am in the process of planning my kitchen and trying to incorporate an island but worried about clearance space and how much you should have. Would love you to do a design lesson on that please🤓
One of my first videos!!!... check out the link for islands in kitchens! In case anyone else has the same question. :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tphvhdEpHCs.html
Hi there... thanks for the compliment! Stainless steel is very durable and can be cleaned but it will get messy pretty fast. If you're the kind of person that needs it to be perfect all the time, I would say no to stainless steel (unless you have an endless supply of stainless steel cleaner)! But if you're ok with a restaurant grade/pro kitchen look, then it's a fine choice. Good luck!
I would suggest using one sheet for behind the oven if want some stainless steel. If get tile kind be crazy cleaning going on. Sometimes less grout is better for backsplash if hate cleaning😂
I like the idea of a stone backsplash from countertop to wall cabinets and vent hood, but I want to mix it up a bit. I plan a split-level countertop on the north wall of my galley, a section at one end of the run at 48 inches high rather than 36 inches to allow installation of a 30-inch wall oven at a more comfortable height than under the cooktop (I'm not getting any younger) with small electrics (toaster, can opener, etc) over the oven. I am going with light colors overall, except a black porcelain gas cooktop and a hammered copper sink opposite. My idea is a dark stone (blue pearl is my first choice) for all horizontal countertop surfaces) and a light grey to white granite backsplash, something like ashen white, S F real, or moon white, something with a distinct foliation (alignment of the mineral grains), and the added interest (if you are looking for it) of garnet crystals in the matrix picking up on some of the red accents for the verticals, including the 'waterfall' from the upper to lower countertop levels.
Nick - I have a pot filler on my backsplash and wanted to use 4 - 12 x 12 tiles on edge making a diamond shape around and centering the pot filler within that large "diamond Shape" finishing the remainder of the backsplash with horizontal glass tile on mesh. Thoughts?
I have a dilemma! We remodeled our kitchen and did white cabinets with a navy blue island and white/grey veined countertops and unpolished brass handles! Now we don't know what color to do the backsplash! It's an open room with greige colored walls. Originally we were thinking white chevron tiles with grey grout, but now it seems like too much white. Then we considered grey tiles, but it clashes with the paint color! HELP!!! lol
Francine Fitzgerald-Levy Maybe this is where you can add an accent or pop of color? Just an idea... what about a color in the same color family as your hardware maybe a type of yellow/mustard? Or black? I dunno!
I would just consider that you're countertops and backsplash are more permanent than your knobs, your paint color and even your cabinet color. Find a backsplash you love and if you have to return a few knobs than it is still no harm no foul. This is my pick though lately! tilebar.com/alerion-thassos-and-mother-of-pearl-tile.html?gdffi=007c33964f424d48a7ad54207c9a96af&gdfms=FE66D9CCDB0C4D12BD4059A9DB9F15D3&gclid=CjwKCAiA45njBRBwEiwASnZT5z1HRUb47DURBHNdnQB-1c7xOAoPrpNeKIk66aooh-EYP-Vq5PvYwxoCoCgQAvD_BwE
I dont know how to style my kitchen with a 2.4 metre window and 4.2 metre backsplash. The window sits in the centre of the kitchen wall but is only 2.4 metres long by 0.4 metres high.
Can't you just paint and put plastic up to start. We've just redone a used mobile home and have went over budget. So I really can not afford anything other then maybe laminate...ugh I don't want to do that..I would like just to paint!
