Do Takedowns in BJJ Hurt Your Knees? Try These 2 Stretches.

Today's question comes from John, who says he's having trouble doing the traditional Wrestling shot when he's training at his BJJ gym.
He says what happens when he attempts a shot is that he essentially cannot get through the full range of motion without slamming his knee on the mats.
Obviously, this is a super painful thing, but he wants to get better at Wrestling, and he's wondering if I've got any ideas on how to develop some more flexibility in order to start shooting takedowns in BJJ without so much pain.
With that being said, in this video I'll answer John's questions by giving you guys 2 stretches that will hopefully help you get a little more range of motion when shooting in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. These stretches have helped improve my range of motion with lifting and training so I hope they work for you.

I usually add thr toe stretch as well since i get turf toe (jammed toe) pretty easily. Great stuff Chewy

Start on the lighter side and work up.

Learning how to do a full ass-to-grass (asian grandma) squat really helps for this. Way i taught myself to do it was by sitting on the floor with my feet flat on the ground in front of me. Then use a rope or something to pull yourself forward into the squat. You probably won't be able to get yourself into an actual self-supported squat initially (this is normal), to use the rope to support yourself while working in and out of the position.

Once you can get into the full squat position without support and your heels flat on the floor you can then work on squatting the full ROM from standing to full squat. When you're in the full squat practice biasing your weight forwards/bwards/left/right diagonal. This will strengthen your ankles while increasing flexibility. You will find that you actually go into a full squat pretty often when grappling/wrestling (think Japanese armbars or any leg-lock when you transition from the standing variation to the sitting one). Once you get this down life becomes a lot easier in that movement pattern.

Is this a serious question? People have been wrestling on mats since mats existed and in dirt pits before that. Your soft little BJJ knees will be fine lol.

I am a collegiate wrestler and it hurts my knee, I have a crippling knee issue on my right knee so I had to switch my stance. Wrestling causing knee pain is a real complaint even at higher levels.
