Do The Freedom Fighters Belong In Modern Sonic? 

I don't see the issue with a sonic multiverse where we get more versions of the freedom fighters. Honestly I just like to see sonic world on the scale of mobius more than anything.

I remember almost a year ago I had a dream where the Saints Row franchise was bought out by SEGA, and the former workers at the now defunct studio Volition were hired to work on a new open world Sonic game in the same vein as SR but more family friendly, and in that game, many characters from Sonic’s past lore were in it including the Freedom Fighters. I vividly remember from that dream that there was a mission where Sonic, Sally, etc. ran up top a staircase and there were jokes that were also targeted towards the Gen Z audience in some dialogue, during that mission Sonic said something like “I guess Eggman really *SHEESHED* the opportunity!” (Play on “Seized the Opportunity”), and that caused Sally to go into a hysterical laughing fit, her laugh was a contagious wet phlegmy wheezing laugh btw, and her laugh went on for about 30 seconds.

There are two possible angles here: either the freedom fighters are somehow added to the game cast, ir they get solit off into their own canon separate from Sonic. Sally can function very well as a protagonist and the freedom fighters are developed enough to stand as a team without Sonic being there. It's just a thought.

When they said “everything is canon”, they were talking about the IDW comics. Sega seems uninterested in characters they had no hand in making. Ian Flynn tried to add them to IDW but Sega said no. Pretty concrete we’ll never see them again if at all.

The short and long answer is Hell Yes! Sonic the Hedgehog as a true storytelling medium began with the Freedom Fighters, including Sonic himself and Tails because like it or not they were and are Freedom Fighters. It's likely that Sonic as we know him today would not exist or maybe even at all without SatAM and the Archie comics back in the day. Hell one of Sonic most defining character traits, his Chilidog addiction, is from SatAM, technically AoStH brought it up first but SatAM and the comics were being developed at the same time and shared DNA. And these characters, all of them, deserve to be recognized and be part of Modern Sonic. When given too a good writer not bent on ruining her character Sally Acorn is an amazing character with a lot of potential and can be so much more than just a love interest, I stan Sonally but I'd be fine with that pairing never happening again so long as Sally and the Freedom Fighters got a chance to be relevant again. The franchise began with them, it should end with them too.

Good video, and I agree with it. I just want to point out as someone who is from the UK and grew up in the 2000s we did get SATAM alongside the first Sonic Cartoon rerunning on a channel called Pop. Now I'm not sure if Satam aired in the UK in the 90s but I feel like it must have if we got the reruns.

They belong. They predate every character except Sonic and Eggman. They deserve to be at least remembered. Also, the Archie Comics have the record of the longest running licensed comic of all time, not even just video game comics. And about Sonic and Sally's relationship, the reason people didn't like their relationship being removed was because it was the heart of the comic (And I agree).

The Freedom Fighters are officially dead in Sonic media, especially since Shuji Utsumi (CSO of Sega of Japan) had been appointed as CEO of Sega of America and Europe since January 9 (effective from April 1, 2024), which also means that they will never appear in Sonic media again and that Issue 288 of Archie Sonic the Hedgehog does indeed mark their final appearance in Sonic media.

They can work especially in a story but the game(s) has to be built around them, a 3D environment in a City like Rooftop Run Night or like a City in Sly Cooper would be the best options I can think of to where Sally and the many others can work. Plus they need to have a Gameplay Style if they are to even work at all.

As someone that didnt really like Archie, but loves IDW, i wouldnt mind the FF coming back in some form. So long as they arent suddenly Sonic's best friends on the same level of Tails, Knux and Amy. Something more similar to the way the Chaotix are handled, where they do their own thing but are still friendly with Sonic would be more appropriate i feel.

Bringing Sally and the FFs to the main line canon isn't that hard. Sure, there're some road bumps, but they're mostly remedied. They can appear in a prequel game to the first one on Christmas Island. The Japanese manual of the first game show that Sonic and Eggman met before, and Origins doesn't exactly retcon this. I could go over the game's plot, but that might take a bit. Just know that Eggman takes over Sally's kingdom to mine the island's Chaos Energy, and it's up to Sonic and the Freedom Fighters to take back the land. This would tell how Sonic and Eggman met, and where Sonic got the Tornado from (Rotor built it). But the roadblocks might be Bunnie and Uncle Chuck. Robotization does exist in the games, but it's much different from the cartoon/comics, where the victims literally turn into robots. The reboot of the comics had Bunnie suffer a severe injury during Eggman's attack, and Uncle Chuck had to replace her limbs with robotics. Here, we can combine the two versions, where Bunnie does get injured, but she then gets captured instead, and Eggman uses her as a demonstration to his prisoners of how superior his tech is by robotizing her injuries first, allowing her to use her broken limbs. But just when he is about to robotize the rest, Sonic rescues her and the prisoners. They could remove the robotic armor, but she can't walk and use her arm without, especially when she's paralyzed. So she's stuck relying on them. As for Uncle Chuck...that's a tough one. The reboot, they had him not be related to Sonic, since Sega refuses to allow the game characters to have parents and such, other than Cream and Vanilla. You might have to not include him and instead replace him with Gerald Robotnik, at least in terms of his relations with the kingdom. Gerald would be a family friend to Sally's grandparents, which would explain why her father trusted Eggman. You may ask: if that's the case, why Sonic never mention Sally and the FFs, or invited them to his birthday? Well, after the game, Sally and the FFs travel around the globe to establish alliances with other nations. This would make her sometimes busy to get involved in past games. However, they could get involved in those games maybe off-screen or in-between. Most notably SA2, where they kinda forgot about Sonic being framed after they go to the ARK. We have to assume how his name was cleared. Well, Sally goes to Congress to not only prove his innocence but prove that GUN was using him as a scapegoat to cover their crimes. Though GUN's corruption seeped deep into the government to make all Sally's claims useless, it wasn't until Gerald's famed video played, which emitted a signal that allowed Sally and Nicole to trace it to a secret file that contained everything about Project Shadow and the murders in the ARK. This is only scratching the surface.

For me, the Archie comics take place in a different universe entirely. Unless if you can tell me which events are canon, then I’ll reconsider.

i'd like to see some characters from the Archie comics reintroduced such as Rotor the Walrus and Dulcy the Dragon (i think the designs from the Post-Genesis wave fits better, but they can always re-redesign them). they can add them a new story overall in a way they can fit in the new Modern Sonic era (most likely in the IDW comics if they wanted to by either small appearances or cameos).

Someone on RU-vid there's a multi series called sonic ops they've already got five episodes now and I think it proves that they can be a part of the modern sonic universe personally the new Genesis wave before the whole comic series ended both the Archie sonic characters and the game characters to pretty much be able to live in the same world timelines are different but they match up with the games. so in all honesty yes, the freedom fighters as well as the rest of the other Archie sonic characters can be a part of the modern sonic universe

I’m in the camp that should belong in IDW sonic but on the question on how to bring them in there is a tough one The only thing that can bring them back into comics is a dc rebirth type story or a infinite crisis event for IDW sonic

I mean people make worlds where these two worlds become one, and I think it would fit pretty well, plus, you can’t just forget about characters, especially characters that made impact as if they never existed.

I said this on another video and I will say it here; *What if they bring the freedom fighters back as... well, not freedom fighters, but enforcers for Eggman?* Always found it kind of weird that it's not like mercenaries or *other evil people besides Eggman who would want to work with him to take over the world.* Infinite and his crew not included. They could come back as captains in the Eggman army 😮

I think the biggest obstacle to fully integrating the characters into the games (aside from SEGA’s general disinterest in older iterations) is probably figuring out what elements need to be dropped or kept for integrity. Like, when Sally was redesigned for the Archie reboot, there were complaints about the lack of fuzzy cheeks, saying that they were an integral part of her character. But were they really? Personally, if there are elements that do need to be removed, I think the Freedom Fighters could still work so long as their core characterizations are preserved. Whether Sally is still a princess or not, or if Antoine is even still French, their personalities ought to be the most important aspect kept.

It seems a waste to have them languish in limbo. I mean those 25 years must account for something. One could argue that they are the oldest element outside Sonic, tails (who beat the freedom fighters by 3 days) and Robotnik. If anything They could be part of a more darker and mature version of Sonic aimed at the older Sonic fan.

I personally really do not want them to come back. I feel like the current games and the IDW comics are already saturated with characters, and I think the focus should be on writing them correctly, since that's far from being always the case (*cough cough* the flanderization of shadow's character *cough cough*). Unless it's as background characters that don't steal the spotlight from the main guys, like the restoration in the IDW comics, I hope they don't come back.

Honesty I'd be happy with a cameo, a side series. Some merch Hell i think you could work newer versions of them in to IDW or even in games. I agree I'd rather not replace what's currently going on. But they were a major part of sonics history

Ok i know people might hate me for this but I'm gonna be honest No They're better of not returning They've already got their places and roles taken by better characters And there's already other teams who took their place [the diamond cutters] So putting them in the games would feel forced and unnecessary Plus they've already got a huge fanbase and 20+ years worth of comic appearances There's other underutilized characters who could use a comeback instead of them (Uncle chuck sonia and manic fleetway characters ect)

I real like the freedom fighters but i don't ever sega making them canon for many reasons. Reasons 1 the are not canon not original non official sonic characters not made by sega of Japan but by sega of America. Reasons 2 there are characters that fill there roles. Reasons 3 the game series and lore is to far developed at this point making these characters canon would be really hard good to see videos of this stuff though.😅

Causing even more damage than Sega CD/Mega CD,Sega 32X,Sega Saturn,Sega Dreamcast. I mean Mega CD/Sega CD and Sega 32X were hardware add-ons for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Just only Freedom Fighters and Forgotten Squad because of Sally Acorn and Tiara Boobowski. Sonic-16 and Sonic Satam don’t have to be like another Sonic ’06 and Sonic X.

For me is a nono. IDW is based on videogames and Freedom Fighters belong to Sonic StAM and Archie. They could do a cameo or guest apparence but not as regulars. Sally could return as a foreign princess from another dimension thou in one issue.
