Im by no means a good golfer, but I have noticed when my grip is lighter and I am not trying to crush the ball from the top, I get more consistent contact, better flight path and my teammates say I don’t look like I am swinging the club fast but the ball is still getting bombed (for me 250 at nearly 60 years old). I like how you explained the ground aspect and I am going to start working on that. Thanks Tig
If you try to hit the ball from the top your body tenses up and you just drag and flip the club through impact. The best sequence is to be fast at the ball not at the top of your swing.
Enjoy all the content Micah but this video hit different. Well done, easy to understand, can't wait to get to the range and use some of the tips. Keep grinding.
Love this kind of video from you Tig. Would be interested to know what aspects of your driver swing you carryover to your iron swing, such as how much you use the ground force, grip pressure etc. May be an idea for a future video. Great stuff!
Micah, you've really got to be proud of this video. There is REALLY good information in this post. This type of video really showcases how authentically you're trying to help golfers find a better drive. Thanks for sharing this! Peace from Canada! 🤟🤟
@@LeoBeebe I think the take away here is for folks like you that want to hit it farther. If you’re ok with your distance then nothing to see here. But you should know you’re leaving several yards on the table. Some value fairways more than distance, but many pros have started putting more value on distance over fairways. To each their own. 🤷♂️
I've watched so many videos claiming to help us hit the driver better, this is up there with the best. And seeing how you hit the driver in your course vlogs, I consider this a much better source then most club pros. Well done, great advice, in an easy to understand format, which we can take straight to the driving range. Would be great to see more of this type of content from you 👏
Another element to this is, practice on the range not the 14 times you use your driver during a round. Its all about timing. Without range work you will never get it. I know because I don’t have it yet!!!
Good stuff Tig, i like the whip analogy especially in regards to waiting and letting it snap at a precise moment instead of just snapping it whenever's convenient!
This is one of the best explanations of the driver swing I have seen, especially the swing slow at the start and fast from last parallel. More content like this please. Subscribed.
Don't forget width. I'm the same build and surprise people with how far I hit it. I used to hit it far in baseball and softball too. Using the ground in conjunction with hitting up is huge. I like a slightly open left hip to promote clearing. And yes, tension kills. Once you have decent mechanics and can trust your swing, relax and let it fly.
A lot of people knock Micah, and I have no idea why. This guy grew up on a farm and was pretty much self taught. Now he’s playing golf with some of the best players in the world. I’m happy for him.
This video is terrific and just makes a ton of sense. I started working out and concentrated on squats and leg press and I gained a lot of distance. When I stopped working out, I lost that distance.
Watching Micah over the years do this is how I learned to hit the ball much further. As a short guy I saw him doing this and my lower body is definitely my strongest aspect. Great advice.
Very nice.....greeting from Nairobi Kenya!....simple and to the point......your better than many pros who have too many swing science..keep it up.......👍🏾
Watch this yesterday and I must say this is the best driver instruction video I have ever seen. I went to the range today an wanted to try out using the ground to generate more speed. I hit bombs! So I thought why not play a few holes. I played 3 holes, hit fairway on every one and on all 3 I hit the longest drives I have ever done. I was about 25-30 yards longer than my earlier best drives and about 50-60yards longer than my normal average. Thanks Tig!
Good instructional video Micah. Sound advice all around. I played yesterday and shot a -1 par 71 at Ridgeview Ranch in Allen Texas. Hit every fairway down the middle and long, aiming left on my setup. I was sure not to get my right hand too far on top with my grip, to help square my shoulders. This helped me feel setup behind the ball better too. My left hand showed maybe 2 knuckles tops on the grip (not too strong). My grip pressure was light and comfortable (no death grip). My takeaway was low and straight back as far as possible. I concentrated on not breaking my wrists, especially because doing so would hurt since my right wrist is injured and I had it wrapped. Because my wrist was injured, I think this helped me concentrate on not taking the club back too fast, which gave me more time to get the club set at the top. My ball position was inside my left foot. I like this better than too far forward off the left toe because I watched a video of pro Justin Thomas hit his driver in slow motion and I could see that his club shaft was highly distorted on the downswing because of the torque generated just before release at impact, but once his clubhead traveled to his left foot, that bow in the shaft had already straightened out making me believe the clubhead was now slowing back down by then. Your idea of using the ground to push off of is awesome. I am a tennis player too and I see your point. On an open stance forehand swing I push off the ground with my legs to create power. I will concentrate on using the ground more for leverage with my golf swing.
I played with a guy last weekend who was small (5’7”, 145-150 lbs), but he produced so much club head speed. He had a great golf swing that was short, compact, and efficient. I could imagine that his swing was very similar to yours. In comparison, I’m 6’3” and I have 100 pounds on him, but he was driving past me about 20 yards… from the black tees with me playing the blues. Honestly, I am not obsessed with distance, but I am obsessed with efficiency. My swing is not nearly as efficient as it should be. I will apply what I learn here.
I thought this was a very well planned and executed. For a non-teaching pro, you have a strong grasp of what you are both trying to do and actually doing.
I’m 5’4, 145 and I can out drive most of the players I play with. I’m honestly not bragging or trying to sound cool. I play with some big guys who hit it far. I bought the new Stealth driver with the Ventus 5-S shaft and I know it added on average 20-25 yards to my drives. The pro at my course confirmed the same after he bought one. Now my average drives are 285-310 yards depending on fairway conditions and wind direction/speed. I can’t wait to hit the range tomorrow and focus on all 4 points. Thank you!
Using the ground! That is a new one for me! I always used to think there were 3 power sources for gaining speed: - The wrists - The body rotation around the spine - The weight shift from right to left But I never thought about the 'jump effect' while moving form right to left as a power source. Very interesting! I am gonna try that to gain more meters at the course!
Thank you for all your help here! Much appreciated I’m sure it is going to aid in improving my driving greatly. Watch your videos lots… Love them keep them coming!
I have watched a lot of driver videos, this is the best of them all. Explained wonderful, I will save and watch again. Only on the grip pressure will I not do what is recommended. Have a very heavy swing weighted driver and have to grip it very tight.
thank you Micah you've changed my driver game. I'm hitting the furthest and straightest I ever have I just went and played nine and was carrying my driver like 280. I shot 35 one under all because those driver tips lol thx.
My last round I did Micah’s speed tip I learned from his videos earlier. My tee shots were further and more controlled which made golfing more fun. It feels so much more controlled and actually creates more speed than swinging from the top which seems counter intuitive.
Great content Micah. The Ventus shafts are dope. You should do a video with your yardages. Also a video of 100 yards and in chip shots and bunker shots. Maybe a video of you hitting different premium golf balls with the spin rates and distances measured. Keep up the great work man
My Ventus driver shaft broke recently while just brushing the ground lightly with the clubhead to loosen my wrists. So I bought an Aldila NVS burnt orange shaft senior flex and it works great. Hit all 18 fairways yesterday (and missed only one green, but got up and down for par) to shoot -1 under par 71. Shout out to the folks at Clubfinders in Plano Texas for putting me on to this Aldila shaft which I am loving. Micah's content is very sound advice and is what I used yesterday to shoot 71.
Great explanation Micah, thank you! golf swing speed and accuracy was explained to me based on physics - you want all your speed generated when the club is travelling toward the target. So going fast from the top doesn't help because the club is initially travelling away from the target. But when hands hit hips, your club is now travelling toward the target and that is where you want your speed to come in. Also, just a silly thing I found interesting - once you start your swing, there are two times the club head speed is at zero 1. at the top 2. at the finish. By rushing the club to the top in your backswing, you could be causing inaccuracy. Rory will disagree, but for me that has been critical.
Excellent video. You do a great job showing it visually and makes it earlier to understand. Like how you broke it down to the sections and illustrated each area separately.
Love this type of video! You’ve mentioned being in the weight room; a cool video would be some specific exercises you use to translate into your golf game
Grip pressure completely changed my ball striking and compression with my irons too. It’s such a small change but benefits you a ton. You generate more speed too
I like the Tig analogy. I like these videos. I'd like to see more. Honestly, you pointing out the trail arm not to be turned over, and breaking down the squat-jump portion related to me. Cant wait to try it out on the range
Love your content. One suggestion. Use slow motion to illustrate what your saying. This will allow us mere mortals to see your transitions throughout the swing. You’re a gifted young man & I don’t understand why you’re not already on tour. I assume that’s a goal of yours. If it’s not, it should be. Beautiful swing throughout your bag. Good luck. Thank you.
Thanks Tig. Very good content. I hope it works on old folks that want to hit farther. Yes I want to hear more. Do fairway woods, hybrids, irons, wedges and how to hit them properly, compress or scrape it off the ground.
9:06 "baby bird". I've heard this all my life and yet, look at any good golfer and their forearms are developed and their handshake very strong. I think they all "grip it to rip it".
Interesting. My dad gave me the right arm tip and the light grip info about a month ago and it SERIOUSLY helped me generate speed and hit the ball more consistency. Went from about 155 ball speed to roughly 170-175. GREAT advice Tig 🤌🏼🔥
The problem that I forgot to mention that still plagues me is striking consistency. I can find the center 10 times out of 10 when I’m swinging very slow, but when I dial it up to like 110mph club and above my impact is all over the place. Is that normal? Looking for internet help since I can’t afford lessons.
Looking forward to applying some of these to my swing. I'm a similar height to you, although probably 15-20 lbs lighter. I don't hit my drives far (250 would be a good one for me), so I'm always looking for ways to increase my distance. Thanks for the pointers, keep up the amazing work!
This is good stuff Tig. The push off the ground ONLY works if combined with the right rotation and hand lag and hitting up on ball. These need to work together to have a positive effect. If you push off ground and swing down, you won’t change much at all. Folks need to understand how these moves tie together for success.
Interesting advice on grip pressure. I read recently that the baby bird / tube of toothpaste analogy is actually a feel and not fact. When measured in lab conditions, a pro's grip is fairly light, perhaps 4 to 5/10 at address, but at the bottom of the swing and at impact, grip pressure is significantly higher at 8 to 9/10.
Thanks for the tips, I watched your lead foot closely and saw it moved a bit after you jumped off the ground. I was under the impression that to keep my foot steady. Well, not anymore lol. You have gotten so much better now bro, hope you could make it to the pro. good luck. ⛳👊
I've always it it further then most of the people I've played with and it all as to do with the grip pressure for me start it really light and it will automatically tighten as you swing. My grandfather used to say swing like a rock on a string.
