Just put them on a Stingray 5. I tell you now this thing growls like a beast. Absolutely great. The biggest advantage of flats is that they don’t occupy as much frequency range as rounds. Therefore they sit better in the mix.

I use these on my Stingray, great for taming some of its natural brightness. They are very versatile, and you can even slap on them. I agree with them losing brightness over time, I'm not quite into Bernard Edwards territory yet but it's getting there. One weird thing is they make your hands smell like metal, at least with my body chemistry.

I had them on my cheap SUB Stingray and I definitely got that "metal smell" even playing for just five minutes. I've since modified that bass and I'm indecisive between roundwounds or true flatwounds like Labellas.

I have these on a fretless jazz. They definitely don't get that same mwahh sound that rounds get. So yeah if you just want flats that sound just a bit brighter these are worth trying.

Put a set on my stingray. They are about the same tension as rounds but feel smoother. They aren’t glassy smooth like some flats but feel more like a half-round. Brightness is there so they are a good alternative to rounds. So far I like them a lot.

I've had Rotosound monel flats on my pbass for almost a year now and I've started trying to play a wider variety of songs and some songs need a bit more growl. Would you say that these are good strings to grab if I'm trying to get more of the roundwound growl while still being able to imitate flatwounds with the tone rolled off?

Just subbed . Good review . I've been playing bass exactly a year by the end of the month . Can play full songs all the way through . However watching some of your chops definitely motivates me to keep practicing . Good strings however I always end up buying which ever I can afford which is Ernie Ball 40 - 95 or D'addario 40-95 . D'addario seem to keep their tone a little longer I've noticed . Best things about roundwounds is after 3 weeks they almost sound like a flatwound .
@WakizashiSabre
@WakizashiSabre 2 года назад
Well I would say that rounds sounds dead after the time, while flats keep their full rich dark fundamental sound which gets better with the age.

@@WakizashiSabre Based on everything I've researched and what you've said . I would never put flats on my Jazz Bass ( Squire 70s Vibe ) . However the Precision Bass . That's exactly where I'm putting them . Already bought um because I got a good deal . So next string change they're going on . I do slap but honestly only 10 percent of the time . Can't stand basslines where slapping is put into the bass line just for the sake of it . This is of course only my humble opinion and personal preference . I'm really into old school Hardcore and Heavy Metal . Steve Harris ( Iron Maiden's mastermind ) makes flats sound incredible needless to say . That's all I got appreciate the advice .

If I didn't know what these are, I would think that they were low sustain Rotosound Rounds. I think I'm gonna give them a try. Hopefully, I'll see a better life expectancy than Rotosound Rounds.

Do these cobalt flats have a lot of tension? My only issue with flats is that they have high tension, I worry about what they can do to the neck of my bass.
@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn Год назад
They don't have a lot of tension, at least up to the 50-105 set. The 55-110 set of course has a bit more tension, but not so much in comparison to some other flat strings I've tried, such as Rotosounds

Cobalt flats sound OK, but they break too easily and get dead spots in them. Not worth the money to buy another set after a couple of weeks. Dadarrio chomes, although not as bright, last forever, even when you change them out then back several times.

A lot of the sound you're hearing is the pickups. They don't sound anything like that in my 60 reissue Jazz bass or 70s Jazz bass. They aren't quite as bright as a roundwound, but definitely not dead sounding like a traditional set of flats. And they do hold their character for quite a long time.
