Thanks for the video! Yeah I think the door design is a big yes or a big no for people, either love it or hate it. I personally love to have then attached so I don't need to mind where I place them, and it makes general maintenance easier, especially when you have a lot of enclosures to go through...but remoblvable lid definitely got its advantages. Maybe I should send you my glass enclosure to check it out :D
That would be cool! But I can only imagine how expensive that would be to ship! And I see your point, I am always losing lids and doors because once you set them down they just blend in to whatever you set them on.
I have this trio coming in the mail today! I wanted to support Petko since he's who got me into the hobby. I'm also still learning what I do and don't like so I guess we'll see how the hinges go! I definitely did want stackable, so that's a bonus.
I love how you can talk good about a competitors product without being payed. It says a lot about the person you are. Being completely honest gives you credibility especially when you don't shy away from saying exactly what you think. Keep up the amazing work🙏🏼
It’s not a competition it’s called being a animal ambassador especially for the misunderstood animals. Steve Irwin has teaching people to be respectful of wildlife, and his family is continuing his teachings and work.
@@billbolton7108 even if he is an ambassador it's still competition. Money is involved in every business and both are doing RU-vid videos about mainly tarantulas. Both of them are making money on RU-vid and that makes them competitors no matter if they like it or not. They neither work or share their income together and that makes them competitors. That's why it says a lot about him because he is not selfish like a lot of others within this hobby. A lot of people are to proud to admit when a competitor have done a good job and made something they haven't. He even made a video about them and advertised it on his channel for free. He might make his own money on that video but it's also gonna give petko a lot more sales. He advertised petkos product not the animals we love so dearly. I still know what you mean though but money makes the world go around.
Love your channel! I used to have tarantulas back in the dark ages, when info about them and proper care was not available. I'm getting back into it now. What I love about your channel is it is concise and you do your research. The past 3 months I've been watching, I have learned so much. Thank you! I recently acquired a young sexed female Tultocatl Alboilosum. I need a course on her. I have made a few mistakes rehoming her from her tiny enclosure from a reptile show. Thank you regarding your video about mistakes that owners make. She is fine for now. When I rehome her after she gets a little bigger, I am using your tips and tricks.. I do have questions, but the one thing I learned is not to stress over her enclosure.... She is eating good, and pretty chill. My first mistake was not putting it enough in her enclosure. I'm going to wait a bit before I redo it. I don't want to overstress her.. she is active at nigh rearranging and building up a burrow.. I have noticed that she is not building it up back in the corner part where the enclosure were the back and side is up against the dark wood.Thsnk you for what you do.
First off, don’t talk 💩 about Petko. 😉 Second, love his designs and the fact that they are stackable and use hinges instead of just magnets. Personally don’t trust a strong T pushing up on the magnets and becoming “bolty”. Favorite style of acrylic would be the slider cribs and would love to see a model that was a larger arboreal enclosure designed with a front slider and top slider similar to Petko’s DIY glass enclosure parts kit, so you have the security of sliding doors, and options for rehousing/ decorating that give you access to the whole enclosure, front and top.
I have the acrylic enclosure with the magnets that slide open at the top. Unfortunately, that sliding top panel gets scratched up. So I'm thinking that hinged top is not a bad idea.
Got into tarantulas recently because of this dudes vids. The ones from 3-4 years ago though. Seems a lil about he money rn. I get it . Appreciate all the help I did get
I have 3 of the "Arboreal" Petko/TCribs enclosures. I also have a ton of the different t cribs enclosures, sling, mini, mediums, larges, 3 diff sizes of coffins, switch, treehouse, round, square cubes, etc. Just saying that so if anyone reads this they will know I have experience with all rhe T cribs enclosure styles. This Perko style is not good enough as far as cross ventilation goes. Sometimes when I get tcribs they smell, it's the glue that holds them together. But after a rinse and a week of being aired out, its usually good enough. However, I had these for about a month, and the night before I used them, I closed the door and when I went to use them the next evening, they smelled of chemicals again. Not only that but there are no vent holes anywhere near the bottom half of the enclosure, the door, or the roof! So only the top 2 inches of the enclosure gets ventilation. I ended up drilling about 20 more holes throughout the enclosure. For example, on the switch enclosure and the treehouse enclosures they have air holes just above the substrate level which is where the sliding door is. These need the same thing. So, if you have a Dremel and have some tiny bits, go ahead and buy these, and make some extra holes on the bottom area ans and on the top. That's true cross ventilation, where air can come in throughout the entire enclosure, not just the top couple of inches on 3 sides. 🤷🏼♀️ But I do like them, wven though they are thinner than the reg tarantula cribs acrylic.
I think it's great when multiple people I subscribe to interact. Especially when they're positive. Good luck with the American market Dark Den. Petko, can we use our Tarantula Kat discount for 10% off?
Great. I really need these enclosure types in South Africa I would love to understand more about the benefits of the moss though. I bought my first bag today but I dont really know what it's good for
this is cool but they are the old design, Petko has changed/improved the design and as far as i am aware he has stoppped selling these, would be cool to see a review on the newer style habitats
Do you have any recommendations on good feeders? I know people say super worms aren’t good for primary feeders, and crickets can carry parasites. I don’t know any good places to buy dubia roaches and they Lowkey freak me out. I only have one tarantula who is a male aphonopelma chalcodes that hasn’t eaten since the day we got him a week ago
Meal worms and super worms are great feeders. The issue is they will sometimes burrow into the substrate before the tarantula has a chance to eat them and then emerge as beetles they won't eat. I have been feeding my tarantulas crickets from a variety of different sources, including my local pet store, for over 20 years, and i have never had any issues with parasites. (When you hear anectodal claims like these, it is always best to investigate where on the planet these people live as that may have a lot to do with any issues with parasites). Using crickets or grasshoppers found outside as feeders for your captive spider can be very dangerous bc of parasites but also pesticides, etc. Cucaracha Plug, Rainbow Mealworms, and dubia.com are all great places to pick up feeders. If your tarantula is a mature male ready to mate, he may eat very little or not at all. Once they're completely mature, they have a single-minded purpose, and it isn't to eat.
@@tarantulacollective Thanks for the advice! My tarantula is a juvenile, as he’s about 3-4 inches right now, so still more room to grow hopefully, but he mostly sits on top of his enclosure all day relaxing, and is weirdly skittish whenever I take off the top of his enclosure to feed him. I do want more spiders like a pink toe, but I feel like I need wait for him to eat or something for a while. Thanks for the recommendations!
I prefer Petko style over the original Tarantula crib style. I don't know how during feeding time I'm looking around for this thing or the other. I've got tongs, droppers, a bowl for dirty water dishes, a bowl for waste, two bottles of declorinated water, a cup, spray bottle and probably other things including the enclosures surrounding me on the floor. Plus keeping the cats and dogs away. Last thing I wanna do is possibly having to scramble for a clear nearly invisible lid.
@@adalberto.valdez Dont overbuy lol Almost commited the same sin. I have enough room dw but im stuck with 21 now. Happens to quickly (This doesnt take my M. balfs into account)
Glad he got a good review I love dark den. he who I started watching tarantula. Videos from. he makes awesome video. I like your videos too I just got to start liking them i will start to remember ✌️💖😃🕷
11:52 ... she's oddly cute lol. Just a pile of legs. Thanks for making this video! It was great seeing how you build enclosures, and hearing your thoughts on what makes an enclosure case good.
I actually told off my local Petco about a few months ago, went back last week all Ts were properly labeled and in the correct environment/enclosure truely surprised me tbh
I work at a Petco and I'm quite unhappy with how their T care standards are. Almost nothing they do is correct. I'm buying the ones I can so I can keep them in actual liveable conditions
Imma be so real I also thought “Petko” was “Petco” lmfao but anyway I got my red tegu (an actual red tegu, not an Argentine morph) from a petco. He lost almost all his toes there, came with a parasite that my vet believes is uncommon enough in the pet trade to insinuate he was poached/wild caught, and literally freaks out around towels due to being manhandled with them as a baby to the extent that my vet considers him to have animal-version-PTSD because his reactions are _that_ telling of how he was treated for the year he was in their care. Manager got in _huge_ trouble when I made a post online about it, especially the part where their corporate response to an eighteen year old cashier who was horrified by me telling her about the tegu and made a complaint that “he’s just a broken product if he’s lost body parts so mark him down in price.” Vet said he might be untamable due to his past, and when I took him in recently for a checkup he jokingly accused me of swapping him out with a much kinder, sweeter, tolerant doppelgänger. Some of my most personable, larger than life, memorable animal companions are petco rescues. I’m sure there are some individual stores out there with good people, but the ones around me are absolute nightmares.
Thanks! And I'm sorry about the youtibe notifications, I have heard a lot people say that. Sometimes you have to click the bell and select "all notifications" instead of personalized. Then you should get notified everytime a new video is out, not just when youtube thinks you might watch a video.
When re housing my Brachypelma Boehmei I didn't have any leaf litter so I used sphagnum moss instead and my spider hated it. Looked like it was randomly kicking hairs when it never had before but when I looked closer it was kicking it off its feet.....it moved most of the moss into the hide I gave it and filled it in with dirt lol 😆
Way too many people keep their tarantulas bone dry when they require humidity. Just something I've noticed in my YEARS of keeping them with zero losses from watering or lack there of.
screws dont just strip out unless youre messing with them and unscrewing them time and time again so yea they wont strip out. rust? meh i doubt it. and i can agree with the door analysis. 9.4 out of 10 easy
I always enjoy your content. Since I have been watching your channel, my appreciation and understanding of tarantulas has increased. For a person who used to be terrified of spiders, I'm now looking at getting my first tarantula. I live in Western Australia, so I'm going to see what I can source locally. But, I reach out to you in the near future. Cheers mate.
Yea.... These "Trap Doors" are tricky... In an unforgivable accident, i've slammed the door in a panic reaction while rehousing an OBT.... The Spider bolted, i slammed the door and three legs of the Spiderling got severed. Thank got the spider made it and the legs completely grew back after three more molts, but it could have been the carapax or the abdomen that got hit by the door... But this was absolutely my fault and over all i like the enclosures from TheDarkDen very much. I wish he would start making bigger ones for full grown tarantulas and not only the spiderling-enclosures...
I know Petko made his own enclosures so they were accessible to people in his country, so I guess I was confused on the T. Cribs collab. Appreciate the honest review. Love Petko, but I dont think these enclosures are my cup of tea.
I just got a Mexican Fire Leg this past weekend, and I was wondering if you would say that this is a good beginner species as this is my first tarantula?
In my region(SE USA) within the archaeological field, we pronounce ochre as ‘oh-ker’ instead of ‘oh-Cher’. Not 100% sure it’s correct but it’s what I was taught by professors in the industry.
Those hinged doors are going to be the death of my tarantulas, since one clumsy move will swing the door shut and potentially squeeze the tarantula. And imagine that you open the fossorial enclosure from the top and the tarantula runs up to the lip underneath the open door. I shudder when I think about trying to get the tarantula away from the lip.
I was so excited when petko said he's gonna bring out enclosure with tarantula cribs because i live in germany and the shipping costs are un manageable for me if i would order directly from tarantula cribs. But i also really don't like switch doors on enclosures, i am way too fidgety and one time i nearly killed me T because of that. But otherwise they look really good 😊 oh and will the coffee be available world wide this time? 🥹😊
When Petko first announced that he would start a cooperation with Tarantula Cribs i was exited too and was hoping, that he somehow would become a European distributor for Tarantula Cribs enclosures. Unfortunately it's exactly the other way around and he sells his designs in the US... His European enclosures are good, but i want the big ones for adult spiders and not only for spiderlings. And as you've said... importing the original TC-Endlosures to Germany costs a fortune and the only german brand i know of, that delivers the same quality as TC is even more expensive...
