My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages”. The book " Polyglot Notes" became a desk book for my brother, because it has answers to all the problems that any student of a foreign language has to face. Thanks to the author of the channel for this interesting video! Good luck to everyone who studies a foreign language and wants to realize their full potential!

Daria is great. Her slow Russian vlogs were the first comprehensible input I could understand. That was almost three years ago. Since then, my Russian has improved immensely, I've made friendships with Russian speakers, and even spent last summer traveling around eastern Ukraine talking with local Russian speakers. I continue to study. I work with a tutor online several times a week. Most of the Russian material I watch now is just regular Russian language material, like the news etc. but I still watch Daria's material because it's fun and interesting. Good luck everyone. Russian is great and it can be learned!

part of the just listening process I went through with learning Russian, ( still basic), is figuring out the tempo and listening for word separations and syllables. also listening to how some of the more complex sounds ( to an English speaker), are formed. Living in Ontario and having a very large and very friendly Russian community, it makes things a lot easier. Also learning the alphabet is one of the things I found to be key in learning the language.

I understand 6 foreign languages : English, French, German, Russian, Mandarin, and Japanese.. I also know Arabic, but I forget most of it. I'm a 53 year-old Indonesian. I learned German when I was 21, French when 25, Russian when 30. now I've been learning Chinese since 2017 while at the same time learn Japanese by myself. I took regular classes in all of those languages, except Japanese self-learning.. I even went to Munich 1993 to participate German summer course and 1995 in Reims, France. out of all 7 languages that I've learned, only English and German I'm ready to speak anytime ... Russian, Chinese, and French, I have to get ready first when I want to speak those languages. I forget Arabic, and I just know Japanese but don't speak it ...

This was great Daria, thanks for sharing this interview. When he began speaking about his joy in learning Russian, his whole being opened up. Very inspiring. It’s so good to see that those who speak languages…LEARN languages. They invest time daily. It is a joy, yet it is work. Daria’s ZTF program ushered me into Russian. And others should know, learning the sounds of Russian letters, approximately, is very easy, 1 week. Then you go to a RU-vid Russian film, no subtitles, go to the opening credits, all was Greek prior, and you hear yourself sound out S..v..yet..lana. Svetlana! And if like me, you’re hooked :)

Finally someone who makes sense. I've learned most of my English through video games, movies, series and later books. I started with reading and listening first. Then I went into typing answers and questions online. I didn't start speaking until quite a lot later. It's not super easy to do. However, when you know what words to use and how to structure sentences in a way that you can have a decent conversation, talking becomes way easier. It truly makes a difference if you start at that point. I hated having to talk in French in (Dutch) high school when I could hardly say anything. It was a nightmare for me. I've not done anything with languages for years due to the stress I experienced back then :/

Very interesting interview Daria...I have spoken English and Spanish more than half my life, then in 2017 I decided to teach myself German, when German became boring I started teaching myself Hungarian (paternal family roots) and then a little over a year ago I started with Russian. For my Russian I watch your channel and use Duolingo for on the go practice. I don't have much opportunity to put what I have learned to use but try whenever I can. Once, while first learning Hungarian, I was at the grocery and heard two ladies talking. I listened, decided they were speaking Hungarian and took the opportunity to engage in conversation. There is an offcier in the department where I am working who immigrated from Russia, we have had the opportunity to speak on a couple of occasions. Being able to put those skill into practical application is quite rewarding. While I had always been told that Hungarian and Finnish are two languages that have no ties to other languages I am finding some crossover between Hungarian and Russian. One example the word for bear (H) Medve (R) медведь they are written different but sound very similar. Also German the language is Nemetul in Hungarian (the country is Nemet) and in Russian the language is Немецкий. Apologies for the long winded post, but I find the study of language very interesting. Thanks for all you do.

Engaging progressive content seems to be the best way for me to get the most progress. A lot of random lessons on RU-vid seem like lists of words or most common phrases without much context. 100%. I tried learning arabic from a book and it was so bad and I gave up. With Russian there’s a lot more readily available media for me to consume and i only “study” when I feel like it(maybe 5 hours a week) and I remember and understand a lot that it’s surprising. It makes me want to study even more. I don’t think “ugh time to go slog through a lesson”, “ooh i get to learn something new and become better at russian. I know it’s just a matter of time before I’m 99% fluent

If I may, правильно сказать: буду смотреть фильм. If you use "на", it translates as if you are "looking _at_ the film," but not actually _watching_ it 😉

Daria I'm continuing my learning in latin but have dabbled in Russian and will return after I get to satisfactory level in latin. Russian is also inflected and is a beautiful language and I've found latin has helped me immensely for learning Russian. Do you recommend assimil Russian or any other resource plus maybe with you if its possible.

This is great motivation to not give up and continue learning Russian. I am also 60 and I just love learning it. When the Pandemic is over I plan on going to SPB as I have friends who live there. I already speak 100% English, 100% Spanish and 75% Italian...and the trick is to learn Russian from Spanish to Russian because they are so similar. Especially with the order in which the words are said...they often make no sense in English then I realize they are exactly in the same order as in Spanish.

Don't you seem to find that many polyglots really like Russian? So many list Russian on the list of languages they speak. Russian is my favourite, too, though I still can barely say anything. Also good choice with the other languages you have. Je parle aussi français.
