Big thumbs up from me on this video! So many people get winches installed at shops and are not told that they need to do this. You might want to add some info in your description regarding why this procedure is necessary. It is actually recommended for both synthetic and steel line. If the line is loose on the drum, when you are performing an actual recovery, it can cause the line to suck down in between the loose line layers. This can cause your winch to bind up like a rat's nest. Especially in the case of synthetic lines, it can create a lot of friction and abrasion and damage your winch line. If you do a lot of winch recoveries, it is good practice to occasionally un-spool your line and re-tension your line. There are several reasons for this. For example, some times you are winching at and angle and your line gets bunched up on one side of the spool. Other times your spool out a lot of line or use a winch line extension and then after the recovery the line gets re-spooled loosely because there was so much line out. Anyway...great topic and nice job covering how to do it properly.

I appreciate the comment. Since you explained it better than I'll be able to, I'll Pin this so others can learn from your wisdom.

I just got the Warn Evo 10S installed on my Chevy ZR2. Was that wireless remote recalled from Warn? Good video, I will do this to my winch set up.
@AZOverland2017
@AZOverland2017 10 месяцев назад
It was for the possibility of the winch spool activating if the remote gets wet. Apparently some sort of waterproofing flaw on the remote itself

Well done! You might consider looking into Factor 55 goodies. Also, if you do adjust your front/rear shocks, you should take a look at Bilstein 6112/5160s with the attendant springs. I love what that setup did for my rig. As to a winch damper, because one never knows which end will break loose, a number of people recommend using two dampers, one at each end. A single damper in the middle is actually pretty ineffective. I know, it's always assumed that things will break on the vehicle being recovered but, that's not always the case. Your tag line! You forgot your tag line!!! Now, I'll just have to cry myself to sleep. :))

Love your feedback! Factor 55 has some great products, but too rich for my blood right now. I do indeed have that same Bilstein setup sitting in my garage. Just trying to find the time to install and film it. After this weekend's trip loaded down with my camping equipment, I definitely need it.

@@AZOverland2017 Once you get that in and adjusted, you will be blown away. Also, look at what Wescott has for the 6112s. Better yet, do a video over there. He's just down the road a mite!

Is this standard procedure for all winches?
@AZOverland2017
@AZOverland2017 Год назад
My understanding is this is standard procedure when you have new synthetic rope, whether it's a new winch or just a new line. Warn says 1,000 lbs tension but other manufacturers will have their own specs and procedures I'm sure.

Can I use a smaller veh all I have is an old Chevy Sonic and I'm in the desert not too many trees here
@AZOverland2017
@AZOverland2017 Месяц назад
You can. Try to find a way to increase tension when spooling the winch. Ex. use emergency brake on the Sonic, pull it up an incline, etc.

I am as well. There used to be only wire cable winch lines. With the synthetic lines, there are many positives, including weight. Thanks for watching

I didn't get why this needs to be done?
@AZOverland2017
@AZOverland2017 5 месяцев назад
The line needs to be spooled under tension wrapping in around the drum and so it lays correctly on itself. If the line is used and starts to layer on itself incorrectly, it could sink or get pinched on the lower layers. That could create several issues 1 being it could misshape the line causing premature failure, among other potential problems.

This video confirms what I've suspected all along. 4Runner ownership is a progressive disease. I hope they never find a cure. :)
