Loosening up of your painting approach should start from your mind. We have to loosen up our thought process. We have quickly respond to our thoughts or ideas and paint without much of self doubting or evaluation . I would just trust and wouldn’t worry if I am thinking in the right way or not while practicing to loosen up. I would paint impulsively or instinctively.
This video is for you if you are looking for to loosen up your watercolors, get into more free, impressionistic way of expressing your subject in watercolors. Being loose is not something you can achieve overnight - you may have to deliberately practice for some time.
So the question is - how do we practice? I am not an expert here. There could be infinite ways. Here I am following one approach that I think could help.. It helped me and I thought I would share it with you.
I am elaborating and demonstrating a process that I believe could loosen up my watercolour painting approach. This is just a beginning, we need to do more practice with this and other approaches.
Materials used:
Cartridge paper around 120 GSM
Waterproof pen Uni pin fine line 0.4

WATERCOLOUR VIDEOS FOR BEGINNERS AND INTERMEDIATE LEVELS!!!
I strongly believe that there is a child in each of us, who would love playing with colours.
I am a self taught watercolor artist , teaching watercolour painting to watercolour aspirants. I prefer preparing tutorial videos showing the process of simplification for photographs and painting from imagination so that we end up doing representation the subject in my own way.
As I learnt lot from RU-vid, its my target to share my knowledge back on youtube by creating watercolors step by step, to encourage, inspire and guide viewers interested in learning watercolour.

Very good vid. Painting watercolours loose and quick without thinking too much. Painting boldly to counteract the doubtful, negative thoughts.

I have been a great admirer of not just your loose paintings but also your style of tutoring. Very calm, considerate, assuring and encouraging. I have to develop the relaxed way of trying out. Thanks. I will certainly post few of my trials to you.

It's the fear of putting wrong colour. But this tutorial teaches to be bold and use colour fearlessly.

@VanidasMangathilArt 14 дней назад
Yes, that's true. In Watercolors timing is very important - particularly for loose approach. So we have to be quick and bold. Once we practice more like this, our instant decisions would be getting better and better..

Wonderful video. It teaches us so much. In particular: to be loose and messy in the beginning. When I see your colours 4 minutes, that’s normally the point at which I abandoned my drawing because I think it looks too amateur! Your example, teachers us to keep on, to keep drawing and layering. Thank you for sharing this valuable lesson.

I like both paintings. Not sure which one I like better. The second one has grown on me though.

Thank you very much for your sincere feedback! Second one is more loose & sketchy. To me all those sketchy lines seen through represents a trail of my thought process and it better connects with my soul😀

A superb video and excellent advice. I know so many people, myself included, that struggle to achieve the loose approach. One of the things that restricts us is not using enough water, it's as if we are afraid of the water - probably because it does its own thing and then we fight to control it. Instead, we need to make friends with the water and allow it to flow more. Subscribed!

Absolutely! we restrict use of water and try to precisely control and expect a loose output. So glad to hear your feedback. Thank you 😊

Sir, there is one video by Shelley Prior fine art on youtube title" Green foliage in watercolor". Can you paint that reference painting again to show the loose impressionist style. I tried that reference but I had a struggle to bring "point of focus" and the foreground lighter green leaves aspect as well as the far lighter blue green mountains too. I was repeatedly trying that, but failed. Asked many others too. Shelley didn't do the loose style in her video, which is fine and I can do that as well, but impressionist style of that reference seemed bit a challenge. Kindly check that video and let me know if you need the reference image of it or you can paint as it is. Would love to see your painting of that and your approach.

@@VanidasMangathilArt Sure. It was a reference she gave for painting. So i think you can use it as well. But do check that you understand why I recommended that reference. Its bit tricky for me as I was thinking the foreground should I go with negative painting and how to keep it loose, where to bring point of focus and all. Hopefully

While doing water colour paintings, one is supposed not to use white colour as per grammer of art so far I know, one is supposed to leave white or blank spaces for the purpose. Don't teach wrong ways.

Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate your intention. I know conventionally we should leave paper whites for highlights in watercolours. However, precisely planning the white areas in advance is not always possible unless you have a precise drawing made upfront. When we go for loose drawing and taking the freedom of dynamic decisions as we paint, leaving paper white is not an option most of the times. This example is such an approach where I have attempted loosening up in the drawing and taking dynamic decision as I paint. I have seen many established and master watercolour artist’s works where they used whites judiciously. Examples, you may check the works of renowned watercolorists of today Joseph Zbukvic & Alvaro castegnet. I recollect reading somewhere that up to 10% of opaque colours are allowed for galleries and standard watercolour competition entries and are treated as trasparent watercolors. I think the option of using a limited quantity of opaque colours give us a lot of freedom to go for bold washes. I feel it is too confining to compromise on quick and bold washes to precisely leave some narrow and precise paper whites. I feel it is upto the artist to decide if they want to stick to conventions or take the freedom of breaking it to get what they are looking for. Thanks again for your feedback. 🙏
