Many years ago I grew up in the okanagan valley where wild asparagus grew everywhere, along the hot sandy railroad tracks and in the cool shady fruit orchards. The wild asparagus that we picked & cooked was always delicious & fun to go on a hunt for. I think fruit trees & asparagus are natural companions.

You gave me an idea. I’m just now starting Alpine Strawberry, and Asparagus plants from seed under grow lights. If every seed germinated, I’d have 840 strawberry plants and 440 Asparagus. Alpine Strawberries are suppose to be similar to wild strawberries. I’d like to hear your idea in how you would plant these. Would you plant the strawberries in the Asparagus row? Or along the sides? Hey James..we planted our asparagus about 6 years ago. We have had a great harvest the last three years, but something unusual happened. In September, 2018 when we were doing fall clean up and putting the garden to bed, there were an abundance of asparagus that came up! It was too late to harvest as they got too big, but had I noticed a week earlier, I would have had my first fall harvest of asparagus. Is it unusual to have a spring and fall harvest?

If I eat raw asparagus, I break out. And, we're in zone 9A, and get some, but it's more for looks in the garden. There's a lady who raises oyster mushrooms in her asparagus bed. She mounds straw over the beds, around any stalks that are going to fern, and plants the spore. It's a good crop in winter, and the mushrooms make a rich, silky soil that asparagus likes.

I planted my asparagus around 2 years ago and this is exactly what mine looks like . I’m not really a gardener but I wanted to grow a few things that would come back every year and that my family would eat. I’ve only seen spears a few times so I thought that something was wrong. I guess I’m actually doing good. My grapes even came last summer but A few weeks after I seen around 4 bunches of grapes I came outside and realized that they were all shriveled up. Then I found a yellow jacket nest in the middle of it :( I’m not sure how to keep them away since we can’t use pesticides in our yard because we have a large pet tortoise that lives out there. Any advice ? ? Also Thank you for this video.

I know this comment is 2 yr old. But you can find these hats in outdoor stores or get them online. Most call them trappers hats. I have 2, and in Northern Maine it’s all I wear in the winter. Nothing warmer. Keep your head warm, you’ll be warm!

What an encouraging video - thank you, James! What is the music playing while you're mulching your asparagus - it was lovely to listen to whilst watching you do your thing. I love seeing Tuck helping you in the garden - he's so cute!

You have taught me much about soil, companions and shade with your productions, what I wish to commend you on is the tiny little bits of wisdom you leave all over. "All labor is profit", four words most in this world have forgotten. My Grandpa used to say "All labor is the beginning of wisdom." I surmise your version is a more precise and powerful message for this generation of youth. I sincerely thank you for your labor and seek to wish you a Happy Christmas and Merry New Year! - Aeon

HELP!!!! THIS YEAR I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HAPPENED. SOME of my ferns didn't grow out long like they normally do. Some looked like they were growing little pine trees on the end. I did get some kind of plant ,( have e no idea where they csme from unless there were seeds in the fresh soil i bought to put over my asparagus.)with small flowers that start to encroach on them. I pulled up the ones I knew weren't in my asparagus growing area but was afraid if I pulled the closer that I'd damage my asparagus roots. Could these of somehow stunted the growth if my asparagus? PLEASE HELP

If it was me every one of those seeds would be planted. I adore fresh asparagus. I bought 600 seeds of the Mary Washington type. I'll be planting them all. Lol. Hi tuck. You are such a good garden helper. Lol

Roots 15 ft deep... Damn... Did not know that... Planted 25 crowns purple last spring... May catch a few stragglers this year, but mostly crown building...

great advice! Deff going to do this. I have wild asparagus growing indoors...I don't really get the difference though. I read I should plant them out in Autumn and then also prune them back. Any ideas?
