Being thrifty, I buy post-blooming phals for cheap just before stores are ready to toss them out. I re-pot them in leca, which usually works pretty well. I've three currently in flower.

Same. I've only ever purchased an orchid, on special. Because I know what kinda divas they are. 😉 My first orchid was a Mother's Day present though, from my daughter. I never would have purchased one myself, but ever since that sentimental gift, I really do love them. They beat a cut flower for longevity, hands down!

My mother was given an orchid a couple years ago, it flowered, died back, then it was in the garbage. I picked it out of the trashcan and repotted it. I do bottom water, and a few months later, it was blooming again. I still have it, and it's lovely.

A Phaelenopsis in between blooming periods is not in a resting period, it is in active growth and will produce a new leaf. These orchids have no resting period and are active all year round. Also using a normal fertilizer for orchids will cause over fertilizing issues, since they require les nutrients then plants that typically grow in soil. If you want to use a household fertilizer you should use a half (or even quarter) strength dose
@missMediaChick
@missMediaChick Год назад
Pretty sure he means "rest period" as in the period of time in between blooms, not that it's dormant.
@Korina42
@Korina42 Год назад
I was just going to say that; Phals grow three leaves, bloom, grow three leaves, bloom, etc. Not a resting period but a growing period.
@SysterYster
@SysterYster Год назад
I have experimented with nutrients. And I've found that they actually need more than is commonly thought. Currently, (spring and summer) I give them half a dose of normal flower fertilizer every week. They're thriving like crazy! But they're not dying, their roots look great too. So, don't be afraid to give them fertilizer, they're not nearly as sensitive as people think. But you should give it a good heavy rinse every once in a while with just water to get rid of any build-up of salts and stuff and in the bark. And of course, don't give much nutrients in the autumn/winter.

Good video, thanks. You might want to mention that Phals have a habit of crawling out of their pot precisely because they want to grow hanging off the side of a tree. Or the pot, they're not fussy; that trait makes them great for mounting.

I move it away from this spot while it’s in bloom, and I had one massive and branched bloom stalk on the plant for almost 5 months last year. And I mean that one stalk had flowers on it from mid January until early June. I like experimenting with lighting, even if it goes against most recommendations. Sometimes you get nice surprises!

The bad thing about regular fertilizing is that salt and other minerals can build up and burn the roots and destroy the plant matrix. I fertilize mine every couple of months and water in between feedings with rain or distilled water so I can rinse away any potential build up🥰👍

I only grow dendrobiums. My neighbor had hundreds of vandas and she gave me a few to start but I killed it. This was 25 years ago and never ventured to buy any orchids other than the ones I can grow ever since. Your phalaenopsis usually have longer flowering days compared to dendrobiums. I am happy that I can have them flower several times a year. Useful tips. Thanks.

Dendrobiums are my next challenge. Do you find them easy to reflower?
@MamitaClaud
@MamitaClaud Год назад
@@SheffieldMadePlants yes its quite easy but I don't repot them at all. They are always in a clay pot with large holes on the sides. Potting mix is just coconut husks and pebbles. Some are just in coconut husks snugly holding the roots. Their roots grows out of the pot mimicking their aerial origin. I only spray them daily (hot here) and fertilize once a month. My wild bees help out with the rest.

Hi there! Been following you from across the pond for a while now. Especially like that we are in similar zones, fortunately for me minus your rain 😄 I've had an orchid for a year now; the first one I haven't killed. What I'm doing different is sitting it once/week in a bowl of water for 15 minutes. Those are the instructions that came with it and it seems to work as it's bloomed a few times in an east facing window as you suggested. My sister, however, is the best orchid grower I know. She's planted them in potting soil as they got so large and they are thriving. She also waters with 2 ice cubes each week. Won't get any arguments from me as she always has something blooming. You have a great channel.

Ive got an announcement to make! If you have bromeliads, i found the easiest way to keep them. Forget soil, you wont need it here (soil sucks!, ok not really). first grab literally anything that has nooks and crannies in it that could hold up the heavy bromeliad. i use a tree branch. then GENTLY take the bromeliad out of soil leaving the roots intact. then wedge the base of the plant into the crack of whatever your using, and (optional as the roots will cling on over time) tie the roots to the log. This is a much easier way to keep bromeliads as their roots dont need to be wet, just fill the central cup with water every week or two and forget about root rot, overwatering, or other problems. this is how bromeliads grow in the wild, and its also how they grow in my home. (if you do this to a bird nest fern keep the roots in sphagnum moss and ONLY water the moss every week or two).
@mtngrace123
@mtngrace123 Год назад
yes i have a tree branch inside, just bake it on a low heat for 10 minutes.
@mtngrace123
@mtngrace123 Год назад
you could also use a drinking cup just make sure you remove any water that could drip into it, or else the base of the plant will get moldy.
@SheffieldMadePlants

So you’re growing it like an epiphyte on a log?

I grow phals and cattleyas. I killed a few when I started. Then I learned that they are a lot tougher than they look and thrive on neglect. They really are easy once you get the hang of bark and your own watering habits. My phals are in sphagnum; catts are in bark. I have a couple of orchids that like to be evenly moist. They struggled until I put them in self-watering pots.

Hi! Just wanted to let people know that there are other types of orchids with different needs too! There are those that naturally grow on rocks which have a similar but slightly different care style than these that grow on trees. There's even an orchid that grows naturally floating on water! There are direct and indirect like orchids too. The easiest starter orchids, in my opinion, are terrestrial orchids because they are happy planted in the ground like other plants. I recommend an African violet soil mix for those!

I leave my orchids in a decorative pot with a amall rock on the bottom to keep the plastic pot elevated. I also use plastic pots for thr orchid that have holes all along the sides and length to allow for aeration. I use clay potting balls, so I fill the decorative pot holding the plastic pot full of water and let it stand for 5 minutes then drain it. This gives time for all the roots and the clay balls to absorb water keeping the pot moist but aerated until the next week's watering.

That's so funny. My orchids are directly on my south east window sill, thus getting the most amount of direct sun you can get in my flat and they are thriving, producing flower stems galore, with flowers that are lasting for months. I stopped fussing about them and that worked wonders for me. I don't cut off the stems after the first round of blooming is over as they will usually restart a fresh batch of flowers. I only cut it if it's withering and clearly done with the world.

i know you hate the calathea zebrina. But i think i found a way to keep it alive, here is what i do. i keep this plant in a low light zone for a few hours of the day, but it will get son bright indirect light for about 4-5 hours. it also gets some dappled direct light for an hour or two but i dont think that part is important. One thing i also do is keep a fan humidifier running all day, i like these humidifiers because they dont make your room too humid but still humid enough. i also occasionally turn on a regular humidifier for a few hours on high power. i dont know if this helps but i keep it bunched next to other plants. ive also noticed this plant can barely go a week without needing water so water it often. the last thing i will mention is, its impossible to not get crispy leaves but mine doesnt have bad crisps because of my way of growing it. also these plants dont like to be bothered so dont prune or touch them to often. :)

I have never used any kind of fertilizer on them and in my earlier home they had about 60% direct sunlight a day. Also i do keep them in decorative pots, so the roots dont really get any light, only the ones on top. They still bloomed every year and still do, no signs of any problems (just the occasional leave being lost cause i forgot to water them). I dont know if im either really lucky or orchids are thougher then what some might think. Great video, ill maybe try some of the things you said

Love your enthusiasm! I am so curious how the monsteras doing w/ the miracle gro orchid bark & potting mix. I had a disaster using that orchid bark w/ a store bought potting mix bcuz both the bark & potting mix contain fertilizer. Good luck on your journey.

Thank you 😊 I've never used orchid bark. I just stick to compost and perlite.

My orchids are blooming almost non stop throughout the year. I do not understand it cuz I feel like I don't really take care of them much. I just water them every now and then when I remember, most of the time their roots are dry with a tiny humidity trapped in their pots. Also I always leave them in a see through pot, not cover their roots cuz they also photosynthesise through roots. I also never prune them, I only cut off a stem if it completely withered away and dried out, never before. And that doesn't happen often cuz they grow new flowers and new buds on the same stem many many times before it starts to suck back the nutrients and wither. Not a professional advice, but I accidentally had my orchids bloom for years almost non stop (sometimes blooming periods overlap on the same plant so while some flowers are just falling off, others are just blooming, and at the same time new buds are growing).

I can not remember a moment when I looked at my pink orchid, which is sitting directly at a south-west facing window, when it was not blooming. It gets shined on by the sun almost the whole day but seems to like it, so I don't change anything. EDIT: I have it for about 4.5 months now and only fertilized it once.

I'm so glad today's video is about orchids! 1. I've made this cut you're talking about and guess what? I lost the entire stem. I'm really afraid to do it again. 2. I've been trying to save my mom's orchid. It has no stems, only leaves and she forgot it in the balcony last month so the leaves are quite soft, with brown edges and some brown spots. Any idea what can I do to save it? (PS just bought orchid fertilizer but haven't used it yet)
@SheffieldMadePlants
@SheffieldMadePlants Год назад
You kinda have to diagnose why it’s going soft and brown. Start with the roots. It might have some rot issues. Otherwise they need a lot of bright light

I've been watching this channel for a long time and your videos are helpful too👍. these are good tips for beginners, but a few things are not so correct, for example when the orchid is not blooming, it must be kept relatively warm in order to grow more and better foliage and roots. if no more leaves have grown, no more flowerspike can grow, because they can grow in certain places ( 2-3 leaves counted down from the crown)

Thanks for the great tips! My phalenopsis is going through its second blooming cycle now (with two active flower spikes!!) and is beautiful :) I was wondering though, is there a maximum humidity level orchids can tolerate? I live in a very arid climate and was thinking of moving it into a sealed mini greenhouse but I worry about the molding issues you pointed out.
@SheffieldMadePlants

Is there a fan in the greenhouse to clear excess moisture? Might be worth trialling it

For once, I don't totally agree with you on all of these. My phalaenopsis started blooming last July, over 11 months ago, and 24 out of its 26 flowers are still going strong. I always bottom water it, actually soak it completely for at least 15 minutes once a week, and I never fertilise during blooming, but only during the "rest period" when it's growing leaves. Have you tried not fertilising during the blooming to extend it even further?

Also, if you rotate your orchid, you'll get weird bendy looking leaves. They like to go back to their exact spot and direction after watering. A few of my orchids have this because it took a while before I learned this. I bought an orchid in late February with two flowers and a few buds. It's grown more buds and is still in bloom. It started growing a new leaf in June that's a little over half the size of the other leaves on the plant and new roots, both aerial and in the medium. When I cut the spike back, should I wait for more new growth to re-pot it? She's obviously very happy but definitely needs to be repotted. Her aerial roots are everywhere and there are fairly long roots growing out of the drainage holes. My other orchids seem to go with the patterns of what I've been reading but this one seems to do its own thing.

I have an orchid that's still in bloom (was in bloom 6 weeks ago, when I bought it) and is looking healthy, bar one root that's grown out the bottom of the pot and has some root rot. Can I cut this root, even though my orchid is in bloom? Thank you for this super informative video ☺

I got two of them when we moved in to our new home May 2022 and one of them I over watered right away 😢 It stod in water and I dident see it. So it lost its flowers. The other one flowered for many weeks. I also got one for my birthday in november in Norway that might have shock it so it died right away. So a couple a weeks ago I put the two from May in water. Since they had not brougt new stems yet. And now there are three new stems coming out of the «best one» and the one that was over watered had a lot of mushy roots. I peeled they all of and it looks like it is coming a long with some new roots and a new stem. This made me curios so I got and found the root system from the dead one from november. (We keep the soil compost inside in winter since the grownd is frozen until april😂) And I even put that in water too. So now I’am waiting to see if it can stand up from the dead. Like you tube thought me 😮 So now you know whats going on here in the Norwegian mouthains 😅 And yes they are placed in an north-west facing window since that is what my next door mother in law (farmers) have been doing all the time here with great success 👌

I would like to do some after-blooming care for my orchid as the pot seems too full now but my orchid is flowering since two years solid and keeps growing new flower stems. What should I do? Just wait until the stress from the tight pot stops it flowering? Or stop fertilizing, triggering resting? It lives on an east window in winter with RT of 18*C and north in summer with RT 20*C.

So it's not stopped flowering for 2 years? I'd wait it out and enjoy the flowers and then repot.

I've found orchids ridiculously easy to care for. Ice cubes always seemed absurdly lazy to me. I've had way more success with moss than bark; the latter retained too much moisture for my liking. The former dries out perfectly for a weekly watering. I can't imagine why someone would chuck an orchid that's alive... They're practically always flowering.
