Man I just did this on the lanes an the ball reads the lane alot better! Made a noticeable difference. I didnt know I was releasing like that. Thanks man! 💪🏾
Great video. I know that I experienced this last week in league with a couple of my shots and the ball looked really weird as it was spinning down the lane but not hooking. Now I know what to improve on. Great tip!
JR do you know if any particular thumb pitches are known to affect rev rate in either direction? I'm at a quarter left and a quarter reverse and have a lot of trouble generating RPMs. If I try to imagine the ball coming off my thumb when my fingers are under the ball I have no idea why it would come off my thumb at that angle. My thumb is almost angled in a direction that would stop the ball from coming off until my fingers are above the equator. But I haven't seen any intelligent discussion about thumb pitches affecting this.
I'll try to envision myself pointing my thumb at the pins but I'm having trouble cupping the ball that much. I kind of feel like my thumb hole needs to be shifted more to the side if that's a thing.
pitches can make a big difference. My left/right pitch has never been a prob for me but I had 3/8"th away pitch in my thumb for years and I realized I was always holding on alil bit cause the farther away from palm u go the faster ur thumb comes out. Moved my pitch in an 1/8"th a time and would practice couple days and in the end I ended up at zero away pitch. 3/8"ths away to zero is a BIG difference in bowling. I've set several new PB scores since the switch on my whole arsenal. Find a patient shop guy and describe what ur feeling at release.
I’m confused how this works with a yoyo technique.. i’m thinking I misunderstood what the yo-yo release is. So you don’t release yo-yo thumb down, it’s thumb level to the ground. 🤔🤔
Yup, video yourself, and you'll see immediately what you are doing wrong. And focus on one thing only till you fix it. Then, move on to the next issue to fix.
I've recently been told by a PSO that I'm a "down and in player" with low revs 175-200 and high track. Tilt and axis rotation of 15 degrees. 10-16 mph clocked at the pins. Left-handed. He had me return to a suitcase release. I used to throw that way years ago before I stopped playing for over a decade (rarely played back then). I think he did it that way due to injuries sustained from bad drillings by another PSO, but I'm not sure. I have just recently been able to switch from 12 to 14 lbs. Is there a certain way to release the ball suitcase style that is better than others? Or do I have to throw underhanded?
If your revs are under 200 unfortunately the only release that will get you any observable hook would be the suitcase release. High rev players can recommend staying up the back of the ball all day -- which is great, it extends the hook window and has your ball read the pattern better to get more help from oil slopes/ratios, but at 200 RPM that release will look like a straight ball and have 1 degree of entry angle at the pins, with a very small pocket for strikes. A suitcase release even at 200 rpms can get you to at least get some angle at the backend and increase your chances.
@Naregnemyes thank you for this explanation. It makes a lot of sense now and matches what I've seen when playing (throwing it underhanded and it looking like a straight ball). I've always had to give my wrist a quarter rotation so the ball wouldn't roll over the thumb hole. I haven't had that issue since using the suitcase method for the last two weeks, and I've had a decent amount of hook from the new balls. I have noticed an increase in my accuracy as well.
