At 42, I've come to realize that money is a tool. I’ve worked so hard over the years to realize that if you don’t make money work for you, you can’t experience true freedom. I’m glad I found that out although it was later in life, but that marked the turning point in my finances.

I'm in my mid 30’s. Once I get paid, I begin to spend on irrelevant things. I work hard for my money, so I believe I can spend it on what I like. The older I get, the more my perspective shifts. I want to take my finances into consideration and put myself in order before it's too late. How are you doing it, Sir?

@Nowhere But Everywhere as a pro eduction person, school is the greatest equalizer. Its why so many immigrants are able to become doctors and lawyers when they are dirt poor. They study hard and take school seriously. And it is taught in school, not my fault you dont pay attention. Its called taking classes in accounting, finance, business or economics. And the accounting lobby is a big lobby and thats why these classes are electives and not mandatory.

I admire the financial independence of people, But you can live better if you work a little more. After watching this I think there are people out there, on the extreme, who plan to die early just to be able to retire early. To each their own but to me, retirement isn't just about not having to work, it's about having the freedom to do whatever you might reasonably want, such as travel, buying things, enjoying life, etc. I don't think I could retire with less than $3m in income-generating investments, maybe $2m at the very minimum. Dude THis NEEDS To be taught In School Starting in Middle school and every year a refresher course. This kind of information needs to be taught and reinforced. I don't know how many times i spent reading poems and learning History only for all that information you slowly forget and have to go back and look up. However financial education you will use everyday when you start working so once taught and reinforced you will continue to use it. I can't even begin to tell you how to do Trig. I have not used it in 15 years. A lot of use i got out of that time spent on that.

I think it's by design. The lobbyists who control the government would have a cow if people were taught not to be in debt to credit cards, loans, and mindless spending. We are just future dollar signs in our young age to big corporations. It would be interesting to see how curriculum really is decided. I still think an economic system that requires increasing GDP is bound to fail eventually. Imagine if everyone became minimalists, and at some point most will be forced into minimalism with the shrinking of jobs from automation and AI. A new system will replace the old and I'm afraid it will be painful.

It used to be taught in schools, it was called Home Economics class.... sad thing is liberals took over our school system with their teacher's unions and they push what is to be taught in schools.. they got rid of CIVICS which teaches you how the government works and they got rid of Home Economics. The two most important classes taught in schools to Americans in my opinion. Home ec also taught you how to balance your checkbook and buy and make foods at home that were inexpensive.

15% investment of your paycheck should like you said all be automated so you do not need to think about it. Paying down debt exactly is the best way to get a guaranteed return. The debt snowball is the best psychological way to handle debt, most people should use it unless you have lots of self-discipline to pay down and not eliminate debts that quickly. I agree cash does need to be stashed aside but this is very tempting to use. But if you keep it in another account as stated that huge. When you see an opportunity just drop the cash!

Payday loans are just ridiculous you must have an emergency fund otherwise it can be very dangerous getting into a big trap. I would say 6-8 months of your expenses as an emergency fund at least for the bare necessities.Paying down high income debt seems like it doesn't make you money but indirectly it does. High interest could be up to 20% this return can never be reached in the market consistently for majority of people.
