Not often there are words or phrases that make writing easier than riding a bike. "It doesn't have to be unique in the history of music, it just has to be unique in the context of the song" is one of those magical brews. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, mate.

I don't often have subjects that I want to put into words, it often starts with an approximation of how the lyrics sound like on the riff and I clear up the fog with words and make up something like that. It's like I have to find words that match how it sounds in my head and how it's gonna rhyme, and the subject comes by itself like I discovered what it's about. The song reveals itself to me in a way

Good to hear you mention Arctic Monkeys a lot. Their hit song "Do I Wanna Know" is unaccountably great. I mean, better than it seems possible for such a song to be. He leans into the singalong pub song in the most marvelous way. It seems crazy how well and how poetically the lyrics paint such an immediate and relatable picture of...well, people know what the song is about for them.

I think that these are some pretty great guidelines, especially for writing a song meant to have a really powerful chorus, but I think it's also important to remember that there are no rules or "best" things to do in music. A song can have a chorus that is meant to blend in, or meant to be a low point, or could even not have a chorus at all, and that might be right for that particular song. Great video though.
@skaldlouiscyphre2453
@skaldlouiscyphre2453 Год назад
I like to reduce lyrics as much as possible, ideally down to slogans. Often the chorus lyrics will also appear in verses, with the chorus serving to focus on that specific phrase. Even if the music isn't very melodic, this sort of minimalism lends itself to making everything a hook intended to get stuck in the listener's head. Even if the style is too harsh/off-putting, if it becomes an earworm people will end up having to come back to it. I disagree that a song needs a chorus though. Plenty of hardcore songs don't bother with one. Or, put on Triumph by Wu-Tang. That track doesn't need a chorus, it's just solid verses.

Most of the choruses I've written over the years definitely follow this structure, but I love playing around with it too. Whether that's having a section with all the lyrical and musical hallmarks of a chorus that only plays once (and where the bridge would usually be!); or building up the central line at the end of the first verse, in order to downplay the first and second chorus before bringing it back in to the end of the last one for a massive finale; or having the first chorus be just the central line with its context coming into in the second and third. One of the best I wrote recently did have two major lines that existed in a sort of symbiosis where neither would have worked without the other -- this one was really tricky to pull off though, 'cause the song couldn't be allowed to show any kind of favouritism for one or the other. But all this is to say, there may be infinite creative ways to break the rules, but none of those will come to anything if you don't understand why the rules are there in the first place. I couldn't play around with "bad" choruses like this if I didn't first understand exactly the same things that were said in this video about how to write a really good one. :)

So far away from here my girl Can't you hear my little dove? Hissing like the Cat who fade away And now she sleeps with a blank stare Where is home and where is Rome? I passed out where I belong Swimming through the lakes of time Dreaming of a better time When you whispered in my ears Where is home and where is Rome? I forgot things that hurt my soul And now I sleep with a blank stare No Garden Gnome will haunt my dreams Where is Rome and where is Home? No Garden Gnome will sleep No Garden Gnome with Scream No Garden Gnome will Sing

You have to live a song before it can be written, I have never written a song that didn’t have some meaning to my life and I have tons & tons of both bad & good experiences to channel my inspiration from. I never had any knowledge of all the theory surrounding songwriting, I just picked up a guitar, learned a few chords and started writing songs, the melodies have always been in my head since i was a small child I just learned how to put the melodies to words and music. Great video, I find this very helpful in learning different techniques surrounding songwriting, I have always just used improve as my main technique, I just keep singing things until I hear something that sounds good. Thanks for sharing.

Great content. I don’t think it would reduce watch-duration or engagement etc if you divided things into chapters with handy titles, or at the very least sum up your acronym tips at the very end of the video. Again, terrific content! There is just so much on-screen text, you cover a lot of ground, and i *really* *want* to deeply grasp your (heyo) central themes. Just a tad confusing sometimes when CTU flashes on screen as you say “ *Create That Unique*moment “. Like oh that’s what CTU stands for, wait, whoops, you get the idea. Only belaboring this point cause I care and your stuff is v helpful. Had a similarly squinty time making sure what the RVC method was in that video.

Hi Jamie, I hear ya. This was an experiment to see if it had any effect on view duration. So I appreciate your take on it. I have split it up into chapters. Just think of it as each letter in the acronym's meaning being revealed at the end of each segment rather than the beginning. Other than that, the information for each segment is in a logical sequence. 👍

Hello, Do you have any RU-vid videos or advice on how to make lyrics less conversational since I tend to write more in this style. My lyrics are written in a way where the listener knows exactly what the song is about. In your video, you mentioned to find a "clever way of saying it" with examples as Tiny Dancer, Fake Plastic Trees, etc. So I looked up and read some of these lyrics. I would like to write more in this style; however, when I read those lyrics, I don't have a clear understanding of what the song is about since it's vague. So I have trouble writing in that style since the lyrics are difficult to understand or to interpret. If I don't know what the lyrics mean, how can the listener understand? Another example, I read lyrics to "Wild Horses" and I don't understand the message of the song even though the lyrics are poetic. So I don't know how to write lyrics that are not conversational in tone. Any help? Thank you and I love your videos!
@SongWritersChopShop
@SongWritersChopShop Год назад
Cheers Aaron, best thing to do is start practicing wring more metaphors and imagery and also don't feel like you have to write in full sentences. A lot of lyricist like to be ambiguous so the listener reads their own meaning into the lyric. I have a video called "how to write vague lyrics that mean something" in my lyric wring play list, it might help.👍

I don't disagree with this. If it's your intention to convey an idea with a specific set of words, that's fine. However, a song doesn't have to have meaningful lyrics for it to be a good song. Many musicians are crap at lyrics, and they've written great songs. Jeff Lynne is famous for thinking up words in the studio just before he lays down vocals, admits that oftentimes they mean nothing, and he's the creative mind behind ELO. There are many songs based on gibberish, and they tend to have extremely memorable choruses. Again, I agree with you to a point. If you are trying to create a strong, meaningful lyric, then your advice is sound. It just seems that it would be limiting to say that because said lyric is not up to that challenge that it could actually 'ruin' the chorus or the song. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a lyric that 'just rhymes.' I'd hate to think that someone is trashing a decent song just because they can't come up with a 'meaningful' chorus lyric. I might go further and suggest that the opposite is sometimes true: bone headed lyrics can be awfully memorable and effective, especially within the context of their songs. Viz: Gloria, G-L-O-R-I-A, Gloria No amount of gussying is going to make that a better chorus.

I hate songs with title phrases as the chorus. It just sounds like they're advertising the song itself. The lyric can be in the song ("Come As You Are", "Man In the Box", "Wicked Garden", "Yesterday", etc.), but having it as the hook just sounds, again, like an advertisement for the song itself. "This is the song you're listening to! Request it live!" For me, songs are poems made to express ideals, and those ideals can be all summed up in a meaningful title which isn't uttered at all within the song itself. Does that make it harder to search or request the song? Sure. But it also didn't stop "Interstate Love Song" from being a phenomenal song which also hit #1, if that's all you care about.
