I love my jewel orchids. My Macodes I had to put in terrariums because their leaves got curly and crispy. I had one that rotted at the base on the stem and I cut it in three parts that is now growing leaves and roots from each part. They love it now with all the moisture. I am in the high desert in Oregon so it gets pretty dry. Thanks for all the information.

I just got a Nishikirian Japan jewel orchid. When I asked the guy what it was, he showed it on his phone and I thought he was showing me where it was from, but it seems like that’s the name of it. I saw it when I went into a nursery just looking for moss and I came out with a jewel orchid and no moss. It’s so pretty and it looks so delicate like something from Japan. I want to start a terrarium. I’m glad to hear that they are easy and hardy.

I just got my ludisia five days ago. It arrived very, very floppy from being mailed bare root. The plant is just a single rooted stem, though it's over a foot long, so I hope it will branch out soon. I stuck it in a dart frog vivarium though, so it's basically living in a rainforest now. Took about 12 hours to perk all the way back up from the journey, but it looks pretty happy at this point, just hanging out with a small vanilla planifolia vine. The next dart frog orchid I want is a masdevallia, because there is absolutely no way I can keep one of those outside vivarium conditions in my dry home conditions, but I love them. My frogs will just have to deal with my orchid collection invading their house too.

I got a little baby ludisia a couple of months ago and immediately rotted the stem by forgetting to empty the cachepot after watering. I quickly removed the good top part of the stem and thankfully was able to root it again and start from scratch! Thank you for this timely video, will not be killing this plant twice.

Great timing, I just bought Ludisia on Saturday. I've kinda wanted it for some time now, but never saw any for sale. And them boom, they appeared in Leroy Merlin. Mine actually has a scent, luckily not very strong, only when you get close to the plant - it's kinda intense, soapy, reminds me of jasmine.
@G-man09x
@G-man09x 6 месяцев назад
Great tips. You are correct in them being very forgiving and adaptable. I have my Ludisia growing in a well-draining, peat-lite mix (peat moss, perlite and vermiculite). I have them in a shallow bonsai pot in an East facing window. They receive approx 3 hours of morning sun daily, through a screened window. This helps keep them more upright without as much flopping over. ✌✌☯☯♥♥

Bought one of these this winter. Looks really good, seems to thrive so far. By the by: I've so far treated it like my other orchids, meaning I give it sparse amounts of orchid fertilizer (say about twice a month or less). Should I feed it more often, and would you suggest I stick with orchid fetilizer, or is sparse amounts of regular fertilizers safe?

Your Ludisia’s look amazing! Mine seem to have gotten verrrrrrrrry leggy. Still haven’t flowered. My medium is a mix of potting mix, perlite and small bark mixture. Understanding the the bark may have broken down it’s possible the medium is getting compacted. My question: is there an ideal time to repot? Also any intentions or thoughts on doing a care guide for epicatanthe orchids? Thanks Dani

I bought a Macodes petola and a Macodes sanderiana almost 2 years ago. The petola has done reasonably okay in just sphagnum moss. I tried dirt for a while but she didn't seem very happy, so I put her back in moss and now i have been able to take one cutting. I always seem to have a problem with leggy stalks, slow to open leaves and it takes a long time for leaves to darken fully. I haven't been feeding her very much so maybe I will try more food. The sanderiana however was a disaster. The cutting i bought was healthy and had decent roots. I kept it in exactly the same conditions as the petola. It grew 2 new leaves then started to flower! I let the flower develop and cut it when it was finished, But one by one all the leaves died and then the roots started to rot. I tried everything but I couldn't save it. It did see a new leaf growth node swell once, but the root rot was unstoppable, and it never came to anything. I was very sad, it was a beautiful plant. Should I have cut the flower bud as soon as it appeared ?

Hey Danny, whatever happened to your monk orchid (Oeceoclades)? I don't think I've seen it recently. I got one not long before the first time I saw it in one of your vids and its a weird little bugger. Mine grew to three bulbs, and everyone that has grown in since an old one dies so I'm stuck at three. Also, has anyone removed the flower spike on a Ludisia before it formed buds and how did that affect the plant? Would it encourage the plant to put more into leaves or not?
