Does VPN slow the internet so much that it becomes unbearable to use it? Short answer: no. Long answer: it depends. Good VPN will never slow you down too much.

This is the 2nd VPN myth and perhaps the most common. There are a lot of VPNs that promise to preserve your speed, but not every one delivers. Sometimes, it’s a tech problem, older protocols like OpenVPN and IPsec struggle to bring out good speeds for you. The VPN I use for work says otherwise. On VPN I'm getting 5mbps ... without it, I'm getting close to 200mbps.

Yeah I’m using vpn on my laptop and was updating stuff SLOW ASF Took it off and it made my updates GO WAY FASTER But this is because it’s a free VPN (like said in the video you have to use top market VPN’s)

One problem that I have is that you use the benchmark in order to test speed when it's well known that a lot of these companies basically bypass the benchmark apps by making sure that when you're checking the speed on those apps the highest speed possible is attained, but in reality your speed is going to be much lower when downloading media and things. What I would like to see is a time-lapse test of real-time downloading speed. That would tell you what you need to know about the speed of the VPN. Because I have experienced nothing but slow downs using any VPN from free to pay for. They're all 100% slower than no VPN. If you're in China or something like that and you got to use it okay, but the reasons for using a VPN here are dubious, unless it's for circumventing the region lock on content.

Maybe its different in the UK but here on the west coast of US, the few VPN's I have tried dropped my speed by half. When I contacted my last VPN provider StrongVPN they said it was the way speed test works. If your VPN server is in another state (200 miles away) it will slow the test down because of distance. Without the VPN, the speed test finds the server closest to your home. I believe, I had tried Nord VPN with similar results.

I use NordVPN and it cuts my speed by 50-60%. I've tested it a dozen ways. It's not a myth. I also did EXACTLY what you did on my firestick. Can you explain that? It's a real pain.

I'm using PIA and my speed without it is 932.27 download and with PIA its 574.34 Thats damn near half! I ran it multiple times. I gotta find a better option.

It’s not a myth I just bought nord and it slowed down from 200 Mbps to 50 Mbps. I did everything, switching to nordlynx, configured to UDP because it’s faster than TCP, restarted my router and still having 50 mbps when VPN is on vs. when it’s off (200 mbps) Bottom line is I guess the further the server your VPN is connected the slower your speed is

On wifi my speed is 700-750+ and with Nord VPN 590-600+. Still fast enough for sure but I'd say 100+ is significant. I've had other so called premium VPN's that cut it in half. It depends where you live and where's your router in relation to laptop/desktop/mobile etc. Wifi vs ethernet. And what the normal speed is.. The lower getting cut in half is more showing.

Guys guys guys.. Have you guys heard the myth that Nord VPN's server was hacked, they found out about it, and waited how many months until they told there subscribers? You might wish to reconsider your sponsor if your a vpn based youtube channel just to keep you credible. As much as a wise ass that I sound like in this message, in all honesty if data privacy / data security is important to you, look closer at your vpn/dns/email providers.

You have no idea what you are talking about (or you do but biased due to promoting on these services). VPN is only an encrypted tunnel to another network,with it you are more or less hiding your data traffic from your ISP, but all the data you hide from the ISP you now share with the network you tunneled in and in your case NordVPN network/servers, so if you do not trust your ISP why should you trust NordVPN more? Because they say it will be kept confidential? That is also what your ISP is saying. Second thing, related to speed, once you tunnel out your are set and seen on another location, all the connections you make from this point are as these were made from that particular location and back to you. Imagine being in London and VPN tunnel to Cairo and from there access a server in Paris, the data leaves London > Cairo > Paris>back to you.... instead of just access the Paris server directly from London with no VPN. It's just a no brainer, there are a lot more hops. What he did in this video was to tunnel to a close location reducing as much as possible the latency, which rarely happens in real world, which is the gold standard of marketing BS. Who buys VPN subscription to connect to the nearest town possible?

Exactly. This VPN shill just moved the goalposts from "VPNs dont slow your speeds" to "VPNs dont slow your speeds THAT BAD! DEbUnKEd!!!1!!1!" Basic networking logic settles this debate. If you are trying to connect to something which is faster? Going directly to the destination and back? Or going to a VPN server that is out of the way, then to your destination, back to the VPN server, and then back to you? I also agree about the trust/security issue as well, you are still choosing to trust a network. Whether to trust your VPN provider or your ISP is debatable. Many VPN providers will give you up when put under pressure. Many ISP's simply dont have the time nor care about tracking your data. Either way your are never truly anonymous.

I use Nord vpn and when i do a speed test without the vpn i get 450m/sec and with the vnp 45m/sec!!! So i really don't get the same results as you!

Big ol no sir to that one. My average internet speeds are 565 up and 25 down. Until I download Nord and connect to the "fastest" server that is. Then I turn to so unbearably slow that I cant even open my browser to even attempt to check my internet speeds. I know for a 1000% fact it's not my pc just being weird considering I have a borderline super computer. Not sure if it's just Nord in specific or any VPN in general but as far as I can tell Nord is definitely not the play

Yeah nah I’ve used for some months and it was a pain in the ass, multiple games and apps wouldn’t run because they knew I was using vpn and My internet speed were cut by half. Just navigate safe in the internet and don’t click links you don’t trust.

I must have accidentally deleted a previous comment I wrote while trying to make an edit to a typo, after a snarky troll decided to point it out as obnoxiously as possible. - That being said I will reiterate my comment here without said typos... It is absolutely NOT a myth. I have 10 gbps download speed and when trying a VPN it was slowed to about 2 gbps. When working with the VPN customer support they were able help me make changes that improved it but I still could never get more than 500 mbps.

On my 1gb fiber, without VPN on: 930.33 up 677 down. WITH VPN ON: 103 down 406 up. Seems more like a Fact and not a myth. (side note VPN ON: 266ping, VPN OFF: 2 ping)

I use Proton vpn (free version) and it sucks. It does get the job done but I do notice very noticeable lag while trying to do something such as download a file that's less than a GB, trying to play games, on a voice call with my friends, or even trying to write a comment or watch a RU-vid video. I am planning on getting/using NordVPN but there's a bunch of people saying that it sucks. But at this point, I just need a trustful VPN that's cheap and won't make my computer unusable for completing regular task at a smooth paste.

Service provider network engineer consultant here. You use a speedtest to two DIFFERENT server's to "debunk" the myth that VPNs slow down your connection. Not only does it still slow down but you used different testing servers which are always going to have different speeds anyway. The first server you tested on could be hundreds of miles closer than the second server and even on different ISP networks which could result in different speed results regardless if you were using a VPN or not Also, glaring testing inconsistencies aside, this hardly a debunk. You just moved the goalpost from "VPNs dont slow down your speeds" to "VPNs dont slow down your speeds THAT BAD". Lastly, in your description you have links to VPN purchases that you get a kickback on. Clearly you have a financial conflict of interest in this "debunking."

Nord VPN slows my speed by more than half! Download speed without Nord VPN is around 560mbps and with Nord VPN it drops to less than 250mbps. Sorry, but you are completely FOS!
