Definitely online, but not completely sure if it was Lids or New Era directly... I just remember racing to grab it because they were down to 7-3/8 as the largest, so I had to stretch it to my normal 7-1/2 as well. Interesting because there's no batterman on the back either!
I have an idea for a more affordable alternative-- hook & loop patches. Less money for New Era/Hat Club, but I think more economical friendly and even more freedom for personalizing your hat.
imho, I'm ok with side patches if they're slapped onto a hat that uses an alternate logo on the front. As a few examples, I have a St. Louis browns hat with the St. Louis Statue logo on the front and the Cardinals 1944 World Series logo on the side. I know it would have made more sense to have a Browns patch, but they never won a World Series...so it's close enough I guess. Another one is for the St. Louis Cardinals with the bird-on-bat alternate logo from the 1920s with the 1926 World Series patch on the side. Finally, the "inaugural season" caps from last year that say the year the team was founded as a side patch are really nice as well as the 100 anniversary of the Negro Leagues caps with the side patch on it.
I’m not a fan of the World Series patch on the right side of the cap, and the oversized World Series logo doesn’t do any justice. I would love to see New Era go back to putting the All-Star Game, Postseason and World Series logo on the left side. Great video 👍🏾
The only caps I love seeing with patches are On-field World Series caps 1996 to date (I admit I'm unfamiliar with previous years if they were officially used) , a few that I personally have are 1996 WS Yanks which to my knowledge was the first year New Era introduced the 3D embroidery, The home and road 2006 Tigers WS in odds to St.Louis the Tigers first introduced the Performance On-Field Cap so I like that rareness and that these patches are iron pressed not emroidery stiched, so IMO the look and quality to me is better on World Series cap over any re-make
When customs stiched patches first came out they were nice now they have become common like any Genuine Merch in the market,. BTW One that I wouldn't mind owning is a 1994 faux WS Montreal expos patched one ;D
This is a open question but also wanted OPs opinion. I just got a Florida Marlins Teal Black Cooperstown New Era 59Fifty Fitted but it is the missing the new era flag on the side panel. Did the Cooperstown 59Fifty's remove the new era flag? I thought every cap that is not field authentic has the flag. Thanks!
I’ve seen a lot of specialty vendors sell caps without flags (Mickey’s Place comes to mind). What NE themselves do is include the flag that’s the same color as the panel it’s on or make it noticeable like other caps. My Cooperstown Expos cap has a flag and it’s white. However I also saw one with a “body-color” flag but never without a flag.
Lol. Good job Doug calling those out. I own maybe thirty caps, probably not nearly as much as some collectors. And honestly, not one has a side patch. I like 'em plain, Team logo up front, smaller league logo at back and even smaller brand label on the side. I'm good w that.
I don’t need a commemorative side patch for every occasion. I enjoy them for The World Series caps, but I enjoy the basic on field caps. That includes away and alternate caps. Regular or low profile depending on the logo. I think the low profiles look a bit more old school. 40s, and 50s style.
Side patches are the go-to idea when the cap makers lack ideas for new cap designs. There have been sidepatches made- contrived really- for everything but the kitchen sink. I only buy on-field playoff sidepatch caps. They’re the only ones that matter. I don’t mind that they make distinct PLAYOFF & WORLD SERIES sidepatched caps. I groan when I see the latest sidepatch collections presented. It’s the cap makers way of saying we’re out of ideas- but let’s observe the customers and see which ones will buy the same cap again with this one minor detail. It’s akin to a band that or music artist that releases multiple greatest hits albums that often include the same songs with little variation. I’d much rather see differently designed caps than a new sidepatch.
My favorite instances of side patches are World Series ones, especially when they’re on the left side (no NE flag and historically speaking, WS teams had the patches on this side). Also, I won’t lie, I’m a fan of Hat Club’s Spring Yankees caps. I like the colors and despite the patches being on the lesser-preferred side, I think they add a little more depth to the cap. There’s a bazillion Yankees caps in what seems like every color conceivable, the patches make this assortment stand out from the rest.
New Yorker here & admittedly pro sidepatch. Love the WS & ASG side patches, but prefer them on the left side of the crown (replacing the NE logo). Prefer sidepatch over a plain Jane, but agree some like the Subway Series patch are too big! Seems like the most of the newer sidepatch fitteds are thrown on the righthand side, which puts a logo on both sides, still nice, but prefer the sidepatch to _replace_ the NE flag.
Great topic, my friend. And for me, less has forever been my preference when it comes to the best looking ball caps. So needless to say, I rarely buy fitted hats as much as I used too. These days much preferring the ‘less busy’ Strap back hats instead.
I wear the fitteds with the side patches to feel unique and to stand out bc all you see is a La hat and thats it but i could have a La hat with a world championship patch on the side
I like the side patches. However I can’t wear the regular 59 fifty. I have to rock the 59 fifty low profile (looks way better on me). But they never have any cool side patches? Any places you can link to find really nice low profile 59 fifty ?
I’ve been seeing hats with all the patches all over instagram and I’ve never really noticed them before, can someone explain what they’re about and where to get them? I’m not even sure if they’re custom or if Lids embroiders them on or that’s just how they’re made? I’m a total noob haha just found it interesting
The side patch is just a trend that will go away. Well hopefully just the random colors and colored uv. Team colors and patches that mean something. As a Rangers fan I don’t wanna be reminded of both WS loses.
In most cases side patches are just an excuse for new era to re-sell is the same hat we already own for an extra 5-7 bucks cause if a patch. I like them on hats like the opening day ring ceremony or onfield World Series patch, those are usually the only reason I’ll buy a hat for a patch. Besides those most of my hats with patches I bought for the hat itself and not the patch.
Side patches make the hat look cooler just can't agree with you. Sounds picky to me. They add something to each hat and make it more of a one of a kind collector item
I liked side patches when no one else had them. I had a 2003 Yankees World Series and an early 2000s Blazers fitted with a western conference side patch. Now I feel they're played out, and I usually don't buy side patches.
Totally understand - and it's kind of funny that we can't seem to get one without the other right now. I like some variation in the undervisor colors, especially if they follow a team colorway, but I don't really need a side patch to be required on every one. Thanks for the comments!
I didnt see a video on this but I know that some oddities in the 5950 line of caps have issues with the bill not being stitched on straight mostly with the non usa caps. seen it only a handful of times. is there a way to make a bill that isnt stiched on right look right?
Yes, I've seen that a couple of times and it's really hard to overcome a defect like that... most times people won't notice when you're wearing it, but it tends to bother the cap owner most of all!
I do miss the on-fields without the flag... some places that make customs or Cooperstown caps either make the flag the same color as the cap body so you don't see it as much (e.g. Hat Club), or skip it on the historical caps (e.g. Mickey's Place)... thanks for watching
The "king" size patch which is about the 2000 subway series is def.one of the best side patches ever...it has great detail,as soon as i saw it on the Yankee cap,i picked it up
@@dreinthe616 I agree ; I started purchasing customs from other independent retailers with better deals and I'm actually purchasing elsewhere rather than striking out on baseball caps at Hat Club.
I was working on a review for a '47 Fitted, they don't make a ton of those. And for curving visors, please go to my channel and check the videos there - I have one for curving, thanks.
Yeah I’d definitely like to see you review 47’s PRO model. I bought the Cooperstown Marlins Pro hat about a month ago when 47 had a 30% off sale and was very impressed. Compared to the 59fifty, the crown is much easier to shape into something more curved and the sweatband is much more comfortable on my forehead. Only downside is the 39thirty-style full team name on the back of the hat. I like my hats to be as clean as possible. No side patch hats in my collection.
Lots and lots of thread cutting if you try it... I have never done it, but I saw a video or two where someone removed the New Era flag by doing so. Very tricky work from what I saw, you might need a couple of hours!
Not a fan. And i remove my new era logo on any on fields prior to a few years ago. So if i buy a retro without a new era flag i delete it. I like having the 1 logo in front and 1 in back. Very symetrical.
I've always been a huge fan of side patches but in the more recent years, I can see where you're coming from. I don't mind commemorating an All-Star game, but you can tell there's been some decline in quality.
And since I made this video I have been surprised at how many times the same side patch has been re-used... they are so common now that the special element has really vanished - thanks for the comments!
I’m not to big on side patches as a few others have stated....but I do like the MLB side patches for playoffs, WS and special holiday events (Memorial Day, 4th of July, Team Anniversary etc...) Right now I think it has gotten out of control and as Doug mentioned it looks horrible if the colors don’t match. The A’s had a 50th Anniversary patch last year and they used Colors to match their uniform scheme. That was clean
Personally, I find that side patches on 39-30 New Era hats make the hat uneven on my head. The side that has the patch tends to get caught in the upper part of my ear. Maybe that’s just me... On 59-50s, my favorite and most cherished one is my blue Expos hat with the 1994 World Series patch, the year of the strike when our team would have probably won. 😊
Great video and topic. Hopefully things have hit their peak with the patches. Seems like the new thing is colored under-brims, which I’m guilty of as well however if done correctly they are tasteful. Some of these patches are just too gaudy for me and take away from the center logo as you stated.
I am really getting tired of them. They are big and gaudy. Some hats I want to get, I don't because of the side patches. Seems like they are almost on every hat now
As a New Yorker Honestly, I’ve seen the side patches for years...and I could care less about them...it doesn’t make a hat better or worse to me ....For me it’s more about the different color ways that attract me to a particular hat .
My local store e cap city they have their store in Teneack New Jersey and they have some hats that I hate like a pink under brim yankee it looks Hideous
I’ll take side patches any day over the new cringe trend different color under brims !!!!! 😡😡😡😡😡😡 either it’s grey or green any other color under brims 🖕🏼
